Part 2: The Press & The Royals a discussion

Following on from this thread: Part 1 https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/the_royal_family/4786923-the-press-the-royals-a-discussion?page=1

As we know, the press often manufacture stories to create divisions between the women in the family, more often than the men. They have also hacked private communications, with cases ongoing. The public seem to feed off this and none of the family get treated very well except the monarch-although not always.

For discussion: do we think it is possible for the royal family to stay relevant and in the publics mind without their unhealthy relationship with the media, and how can they achieve that? How will previous and current legal proceedings alter the relationship?
Please do not intentionally derail this thread by discussing your personal dislike of particular family members or if they deserve it. I would really like to continue this discussion on how the royal family and the press interact, as above.

The Press & The Royals: a discussion | Mumsnet

As we were just having a great discussion on this topic I’m going to try again to continue it on a thread of its own. A previous thread highlighted tw...

@skullbabe yup agreed.

That's dreadful for H&M and Doria.
So scary for them all.
Harry spoke out strongly against all the hassle they got in the early months of their relationship from media outlets in the UK.
He was so conscious of the hounding his mother got and how that ended. Sad

Whaeanui · 17/05/2023 16:15

@ancientgran that doesn’t mean ‘it was about photos’, they’ll take them for sure but they ultimately want to know where they are staying which is why they keep driving trying to shake them off.

Well their spokesman was the one who said it, he didn't say anything about where they are staying as far as I could see. As I said I'm sure there are safer ways to find out where they are staying but either way I wouldn't get into a chase in a busy city. I'm a happy self confessed coward.

I wonder if the driver was trained for this sort of thing, such a dangerous situation. It is dangerous even for a trained driver but even worse if it is an untrained one. I have visited officers seriously injured in a chase in hospital and as their inspector said there are no prizes for writing yourself off.

ancientgran · 17/05/2023 17:07

Just seen an update an it says they were staying at a private address and didn't want to be followed there. So I guess there was the photos and the location.

Whaeanui · 17/05/2023 17:16

What do you mean you wouldn’t get involved in a chase. What exactly would you do? Pull over and stay there all night while they surround the car taking photos? I don’t think you would know what you’d do because their life is so far removed from ours and we aren’t ever going to be chased by paps.

Anyway, plenty of threads blaming them elsewhere.

Kate may have extensions - no wig. No idea about Meghan- her hair is ok, nothing special

Meghan's hair was the subject of a song which came 5th at Eurovision last year. Ofcourse Kate immediately inserted herself in the next one copying Meg's hairstyle and dress. 😂Lol. No one will pay to listen to her play if not for the man she married but Meg earned millions as a professional actress for over a decade but ofcourse according to BM she has no talent. Ooops!

As I said I've been in a high speed chase and yes I'd rather pull over and sit there. Their driver obviously has stronger nerves than I do but I do know what I'd do. Although thinking about it they were in New York so I'm not sure if it would have been high speed due to other traffic, if it was other cars following me at a normal speed I'd probably carry on.

I highly doubt Kate’s ‘copying’ Meghan. So childish.

There’s a collage doing the rounds on Twitter atm, showing the many times Meghan ‘copied’ Kate. Include her wedding dress from her first marriage.

(For the record, I think that’s childish too. I doubt anyone is copying anyone else, just easy for similar styles to be found when people are photographed so much)

LivelyBlake · 17/05/2023 17:58

How can you have a high speed chase in Manhattan if the speed limit is 25 mph?
Unless you are police of course, or a criminal or a gangster of whatever they have in NY, but Harry and Meghan are private citizens, presumably law abiding ones.

You can doubt all you want but facts show otherwise. https://twitter.com/kneezurr/status/1657812007859494914?s=20 several in fact.

Whaeanui · 17/05/2023 18:11

@LivelyBlake I don’t think they said high speed chase. Just relentlessly and dangerously chased.

As I said, anyone can do that. This is what I saw earlier on Twitter

As I said, I think it’s more likely that over the years, they’ve just worn similar outfits 🤷‍♀️

NYPD have said no high speed chase, basically nothing much happened and there were no injuries, collisions or anything else. So basically another non story put out by a H&M 'spokesperson'.

user1477255159 · 17/05/2023 19:07

MSNBC said on America news America does not chase celebrities. H&M was circling around because they was trying to get rid of the paparazzi. They didn’t want them to know where they were staying. People are saying this is a set up from the UK and RF. https://twitter.com/StevieAudio/status/1658854664597651456 No word from the RF about concern for their safety. It seems they're only interested in an opportunity to express condolences; they'll wait several decades for that!

The DM is obsessed with their security! 😣

I’ve seen all over Twitter how Charles is trying to ‘murder’ them, the same way he did Diana.

It’s unhinged.

polkadotdalmation · 17/05/2023 19:19

Twitter has always been unhinged 🤣

StrawberriesSW1 · 17/05/2023 19:23

As M&H had starved the media, they gave their front page to other news! 😂
Only that every right thinking, analytical human already knew this. 😂

"Outside" their home. Didn't get in the grounds. Still very scary though.

Crazies tend to do this in America, and in the UK.
Was it Madonna who had a crazy "fan" actually break in and live in her house (while they were away on tour) for several days??

The Queen had someone actually break into her bedroom at Buck Palace in the 80s.
Someone was arrested recently outside BP throwing in shotgun cartridges.
2021 a man with a crossbow was arrested after breaking into the grounds of Windsor Castle.

Yeah it's not worth the risk to life speeding away from cameras. The worst that can happen then is the paps get the photos.

That is not what they want though.

They want to see where they are staying. They will then do a full monty on Haz n Megs fancy friends - how much their house cost, past drug issues, how much they earn - you know the drill.

They want to harrass, intimidate, force error, isolate, humiliate, the works.

And judging by the other thread people are well up for it.

Lets not have Kate vs Meghan on this thread. Each woman is entirely valid in her life choice and public presentation.

I know the media treatment of them is very different , I also know which one I would like a night out with BUT there are loads of threads for that.

This thread on the other hand is very interesting (and realtively civil). I am learning a lot about the press and the courts.

And by the wsay thank you to @Whaeanui for starting and maintaining it.

We can assume that the principals were trying to evade paps for two hours before going to their final destiation and some dangerous events happened in that time frame.

Whaeanui · 17/05/2023 20:26

Thanks very much @4plusthehound

They tried to lose the paps for 2 hours, they went to a police station for 15 minutes, tried to get in a taxi but had to return to the station as that didn’t work. So not a high speed chase for 2 hours and I don’t believe their spokesperson said it was.

@polkadotdalmation You said that on the other thread as well and it was pointed out that you are incorrect.

NYPD did not suggest that basically nothing much happened and there were no injuries, collisions or anything else

Nobody claimed it was a two hour high speed chase.

Why muddy the water like that?

What so heavily invested in disembling?

We can assume that the principals were trying to shake off the paps for two hours during which some dangerous driving occured. I believe 80 mph on the FDR for example.

Where did you get the fact that they were travelling at 80mph at any time from? I thought they were only travelling in Manhattan?
