On tonight BBC1 at 8pm if anybody is interested. Might be worth a watch. Called King Charles will he change the monarchy. I doubt it but will record it anyway to see what they have to say.

OP posts:

@Viviennemary @Roussette

The real issue is that the monarchy as a system allowed Andrew to do all this

By personalising it as ' indulgent mother , spoilt son' we allow the institution to get away with it.

It allows all the abuses we know of .
What has been done about any of the abuses - legal, financial , sexual?

CathyorClaire · 28/04/2023 21:21

If you looked at his engagements when he was a working royal, it was full of rounds of golf and dinners at top golf clubs. This was his "work".

The terms of Pitch@Palace 'charity' are worth a look too. And let's not forget the cosy but subsequently deemed illegal payments to a top aide in the name of said 'charity'.

It would be bad enough if he were merely the tiresome buffoon he is but I entirely agree that the institution that has allowed him to slide away from spraying the press with paint and smashing his car through palace gates rather than take a short detour has questions on the management of his escalating behaviour to answer.

I think we have actually agreed on this point Roussette!

Hooray!

Roussette · 28/04/2023 21:28

@CathyorClaire pitch@palace was an absolute disgrace

It was at the end of his reign as untouchable favourite son and it should never have happened. Somewhere along the line taxpayers paid

CathyorClaire · 28/04/2023 21:41

We've never had anything but squirming evasion as to how his mates the Beckhams got to hold a private 'princess party' for their daughter at BP in the Queen's absence either.

If they're going begging I wouldn't mind one but I'm not holding my breath 😁

Yep and romping round Balmoral.

And yet royalists would apparently be absolutely fine with this moral vacuum getting doused in magic olive oil and donning the shiny hat next week if that's what fate had dished up.

So you speak for Royalists now do you?
I don't think even the most fervent royalist would say one good word about Andrew. I don't know of anyone, even in the media who says anything nice. GB news presenters regularly slate him, so that's saying something.

Sadly we can't be responsible for the behaviour of our loved ones, and a mother will love even the worse of their children. I've seen Ian Huntley's mother with him, and believe me she still loves him.

No one much interacts with Andrew in public on anything but the most superficial level, except his ex wife and daughters.

CathyorClaire · 29/04/2023 12:44

Yet but for an accident of birth order they would now be stuck with him and not a thing to be done about it just as they'd be stuck with Harold being the heir had he happened to be the firstborn.

Whaeanui · 29/04/2023 12:54

*I don't think even the most fervent royalist would say one good word about Andrew. *

Yet we don’t have endless threads about how awful he is, the shame he’s brought to the monarchy and the country, how his titles should be taken or how he shouldn’t be at the coronation, shouldn’t have a big palace he and his ex get to live in. People can’t be that bothered by what he’s done if they’re silent about it.

CathyorClaire · 29/04/2023 13:00

Yet we don’t have endless threads about how awful he is

Agree.

Any threads about him get very little traction despite his decades and decade's worth of appalling behaviour even prior to the Epstein connection.

Whaeanui · 29/04/2023 13:16

I know, just seeing ‘the Epstein connection’ which is actually a close personal friend he stayed with, it’s fricking outrageous!

This is an extremely good point!

polkadotdalmation · 29/04/2023 13:43

We seem to have endless mentions of Andrew. 👇. Re an actual thread.. it happened years ago. It's been done to death in the media. It's had a resolution of sorts. He's been demoted and humiliated.

Frankly if there was a thread, you wouldn't get one person defending him. The most I could ever say is he wasn't found guilty in court. Doesn't make him not guilty however, and he is massive,y unpopular for a reason. Even before the scandal, he was an arse.

polkadotdalmation · 29/04/2023 13:47

I'd hardly say he's 'got away with it'. Do you expect him to be put in the tower and executed? He's had everything, even from his lifestyle taken away from him and simply no one respects him. He's not sleeping rough of course and the RF have to shield him to some extent for self preservation. We've all seen the damage people (H&M) can do when they don't get their own way. We don't want another one on Netflix.

CathyorClaire · 29/04/2023 13:49

But you are sidestepping the point that a hereditary monarchy means that the eldest gets the gig regardless of competence, judgement or just being a massive arse.

It's a royal Buggin's turn.

StaunchMomma · 29/04/2023 14:19

I cannot wait for all this coronation boredom to be over.

The truth is, most people don't care about the King or his family.

It's just being rammed down our throats at the moment.

I will not be brainwashed into cheering on an incredibly entitled man who was born into a pointless role.

Novella4 · 29/04/2023 15:54

I agree of course

But I've just read something weird

Charles has commissioned and HAD BLESSED an opaque screen so he can be more effectively hidden from view when anointed

Now any religious ceremony I have seen has had an element of public declaration

Why is Charles being hidden ???

Why can't he be seen , just as others are when blessed or anointed ?

The reason given by a spokesman is that it is to hide the private moment between Charles and god

They actually came out and said it

Secondly why can't Charles have the symbolic canopy - as is traditional - and it's all about tradition !

He's breaking with tradition so he can be hidden when god gives him
the nod ???

Which is it ? You are the Chosen One or you need hidden in case you burst into flames ?

CathyorClaire · 29/04/2023 20:35

The reason given by a spokesman is that it is to hide the private moment between Charles and god

I've just had a brief look at the reports on this.

Whole thing gets more ridiculously woo by the day.

polkadotdalmation · 29/04/2023 20:42

It dates back about a thousand years, so it's going to be rather archaic to modern eyes. Sit back and enjoy living history. I love history so I'll be imagine Charles 11 as he's a much more romantic historical figure.

When he gave his interview and when the civil case was happening there were numerous threads on here, with hundreds of posts (several of the threads filled). It's quite difficult to have multiple ongoing to threads when the general consensus is he's an arse.

CathyorClaire · 29/04/2023 20:55

A thousand years of history have already been fricked about with to suit the current incumbent's sentiment.

Hiding the magic moment behind a screen on windblown oak poles isn't going to nullify it.

Agree with this. It isn't a mother/son issue. It's an institution issue.

He's being kicked out of his mansion into a 4 bed house with his ex wife. He's had all his royal duties removed from him. He's barred from all ceremonial occasions that they can get away with, his honorary titles have been removed. he has had his personal life torn to shreds and has no respect from anyone except his direct family. He is hated worldwide. He wouldn't even be photographed in public if the press didn't conspire to print his photo.

Short of bricking him up in the tower, what else can anyone do?

Roussette · 29/04/2023 22:06

He's being kicked out of his mansion into a 4 bed house with his ex wife

He's going nowhere. It's spin

His ex wife of 27 years lives on our dime. They are both there to stay

Let me know when they leave, I'll throw a party but can it before 2030 as that bottle i laid down will be off by then
