Pardon the Apple News link !
I saw this earlier and I might be a big romantic but it really touched me ! 🥹
It was very a very heartfelt and unneeded comment and for me shows that he's still wild about her after all this time they have been together.

If he really thought that he wouldn't be doing what he allegedly does.

Allegedly is a really important part of that sentence.

But you didn't post the full essay. You posted a piece that I think sounded quite nasty, I don't think commenting on someone being painfully thin is any more acceptable than calling someone fat. As to the painting maybe the issue was the artist rather than the subject or then again it was just her interpretation.

It is acceptable to talk about someone being thin or fat. It is not acceptable to belittle people but it is acceptable to discuss things. Public figures are public figures - this means they are subject to discussion.

Some of the posters here are like the women who used to tell me ' of course your husband is having affairs, they all do , while I was home alone with a baby and he was in the middle of a war zone !

Dear lord. Why are people so determined to be hurtful and unpleasant? They must be so unhappy.

Referring to someone as painfully thin is negative, who decides when you become painfully thin rather than just thin?

I think you are right, it doesn't matter what they look like or how successful they are, if they aren't happy they want to pull others down.

@Kittykatchunjy I think she’s got a great figure and of course she has a bum.
Jesus Christ, who needs men when women will tear each other down anyway.

I agree. Pippa has a fabulous figure. She’s built like a world class athlete and is far from scrawny.

Notellinganyone · 21/04/2023 21:28

Sudeko · 21/04/2023 15:15

Exactly, but it's still not a given. She is still very disciplined and listens to their advice instead of doing her own thing. She is doing her best to look her best which can get boring after a while but she keeps on doing it which is an achievement.

What a tedious waste of time though. There’s more to life.

CathyorClaire · 21/04/2023 21:30

Willy has been punching for years.

Might be a bit more interesting if she'd said it...

Agree! How do people feel good pulling down other women? I just cannot get my head around feeling good about yourself after some of the awful comments I've read on this thread

OldFan · 21/04/2023 21:32

@Notellinganyone I wouldn't want to be that thin, been there and it's a lot of work.

Having said that, I think Kate has a lot of opportunities to do what she wants through charitable ventures etc, she isn't only having to focus on physical appearance.

JaneFondue · 21/04/2023 21:34

MN always thinks women with incredible achievements are jealous and bitter of women whose main achievement is "to look their best".It's really odd and depressing for a women's site.

I hope Margaret Atwood never writes about Meghan Markle's schmaltzy brand of California woo, because then she will be accused of being old and bitter and jealous of Meghan Markle.

Hilary Mantel was a goddess. Incredible writer, incredible woman, incredible icon. FGS leave her out of this fawnfest, if you are unable to understand her essay or literary standing.

She was quite happy to accept a damehood from Prince Charles

MouthfulofMidwinter · 21/04/2023 21:36

@Iwasafool, it's a well-known piece from 2013, generated a lot of discussion in the media when it came out (the Daily Heil had some clickbait headline like PLASTIC PRINCESS DESIGNED TO BREED!!!), and it was discussed in detail on here on more than one occasion. I can't help it if you've never heard of it, and didn't read the extracts I posted properly.

In fact, you don't need any further context for those passages, anyway.

And it's pretty disingenuous to pretend you're unaware of the long history of media discussion of PK as 'painfully thin' -- it comes up on here all the time. Those aren't HM's personal opinions, they're her distillation of the public discourse around PK's body. Which was, in 2013, mostly concerned with her thinness and pregnancy/ies, whereas ten years on, 'Has she had cosmetic surgery?' and 'How is she ageing?' has been added.

The essay is remarkably sympathetic to PK, and to the Queen and Diana, and I think was fascinated with Prince Charles suits. She'd certainly met both PC and the Queen.

But why is that some kind of 'gotcha'? Lots of writers do.

I guess the exact point is up for debate, but that article is fine IMO. Painfully thin is not belittling IMO.

These are public figures. The public has a right to discuss.

People are entitled to accept an honour from a monarchy whilst also commenting on them or even not supporting the institution or liking the individual RF members.

Honours should not be reserved for sycophants.

I used to do citation nominations for the life science/ biotech sector, mostly CBEs. The task was to find folks who were highly regarded in the sector and had made an impact not just in industry but in a wider sense of charity and community. As well as box ticking in gender/ethnicity. One also had to look out for any bear traps or reputational damage that could sully the citation. It would have been DCMS that would have handled hers I guess, which she got in 2014 a year after the Royal Bodies essay. I can only think that the citation came from somebody batting for her in the lower ranks, and it slipped through DCMS ministers/No 10 and the Royal Family. Pure genius just like her.

mostlysunnywithshowers · 21/04/2023 21:52

Well, she bloody does look stunning. I am always impressed by how immaculately turned out she is every single time. I find it a bit too much of a fuss getting all fancied up for a drink at the pub some days, and I find all formal occasions draining. To go through the rigmarole of pressed clothes, hair, makeup, jewellery, (not to mention the endless smiling and greeting strangers) day after day after day is serious commitment to being appropriately attired for the job!

Confused She is not 'appropriately attired FOR the job', being dressed up IS her job.

The role of a princess is to be a living object for the populace to look at and comment upon.

Roussette · 21/04/2023 21:57

Yes. She always looks stunning. But so could a lot of us if we had hairdressers, fitness experts, skin and make up artists, fashion experts, et al.

DuchessOfSausage · 21/04/2023 22:20

He has a dimpled chin, which is pretty amazing for someone with allegedly no chin.

@Roussette , she looks great anyway. Most of us could not look like that. I could look a lot better with all that but there is naff all I could do about my body frame, height etc.

Some of my friends and relatives have a similar build to her. They aren't 'painfully thin' - they have slim slender body types. Kate is obviously toned but she is sporty anyway. Believe it or not some people enjoy exercising and don't do it to look nice.

ShamedBySiri · 21/04/2023 22:22

She may not be quite world class but Pippa is certainly very athletic.
I could be uncharitable and say that having the time and money to devote one's days to a training schedule without other pressures gives a significant advantage but one still has to put in the graft, the hours of training and even then some people will achieve better results than others. Pippa has some very creditable athletic achievements.

Cycling 3000 miles across America and swimming 4 miles down the Bosporous aren't for the faint hearted or the lazy.
