As the late Queen said 'apres moi le deluge' and here we are 3 weeks away from a coronation in which only 9% of the population are highly interested.

@Darthwazette "I don’t think a slimmed down monarchy is actually a great idea. They need more going on; more royal duties, more people doing them, to keep them in the public eye."
I agree. I'm an ardent Republican and would like to see them gone tomorrow, but I would hate a pointless, bike riding , Waitrose shopping Tory party chief executive even more. If they're here, I want something to look at for my money- gold coaches, diamonds, posh frocks, satin breeches, glamorous weddings and all.

Samcro · 17/04/2023 11:59

Harry has not behaved well. but nothing he has done is on par with PA.
W&K need to do more. they need to step up. we don't need PB/PE to be working royal, just the ones we have do the job they are paid for.

vera99 · 17/04/2023 12:20

The problem is in the modern age most of us are starting to see them as state officials with all the transparency and accountability that goes with that. The mystery and majesty of the institution isn't cutting it any more.

I get the impression the Queen and Charles have tried to make them work more without any success. So instead their staff have created initiatives that make them look like they are working. Earthshot which William seems to do nothing himself except turn up at an annual ceremony. And Kate's early years centre which amounts to a monthly meeting with experts.

purpledalmation · 17/04/2023 12:39

@. What evidence do you have for that assertion? Do you work on either of these projects and have first hand knowledge

Yes, but thankfully lots of people can see right through the flim- flam. They need to stop treating the british public like gullible fools.

feellikeanalien · 17/04/2023 13:28

I think the RF have always had scandals and frankly don't think any of them have been what I would think of as role models. It is exacerbated now because of 24 hour news coverage and social media.

Times have changed and because the Queen was on the throne for so long it is almost impossible to imagine anyone else being called that. Especially Camilla in light of what happened between her and Charles. I don't have any feelings about her particularly and although I am certainly not a Royalist I have always just sort of accepted them as part of our constitutional set up.. I think the main problem is that monarchy is a complete anachronism in this day and age. Logically my head says the monarchy should be abolished but bearing in mind the total incompetence with which most major changes in this country are carried out I fear that it would be out of the frying pan into the fire.

The last thing this country needs at the moment is another massive divisive upheaval.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 17/04/2023 13:31

Did the late Queen really say “Apres moi la deluge” or are you confused with a Monarch of the French persuasion?

I seem to remember reading jokingly she had made that comment which was an astute summation of what is happening. It is of course dating back to the last monarch of France before the revolution. In less developed countries she would be well on the way to edification by now.

Stats - average work days per royal 84.5 days worked/year x 7.5 hrs = 633.75 William and Kate’s Wage £23,000,000 / 633.75 = £36,291.91 per HOUR.

I'm going 'working' to a jazz club tonight and tomorrow will be going into London to open a coffee shop followed by a working lunch in a restaurant where I will ask questions of the staff who will look at me as if I am mad. I may buy the Big Issue and allow myself to be photographed doing so. Can I get paid for all that ?

😂

michaelmacrae · 17/04/2023 15:33

I don't know much about all this, but wonder if part of the problem is the fact that different parts of the RF have their own press offices? It seems a strange set up to me, because it encourages silo-isation and a competitiveness between family members. And plays right into the press's hands.
Surely it would have been better for the firm as a whole to have a single, combined press office? Wonder when and why it was set up that way? It seems just so cold that a parent can put out negative stories about their own child in order to make themselves look better. And we're supposed to look up to this family as paragons of virtue.

I don't care if the RF survives or not, but surely having competing POs is helping to contribute to their downfall. After all, they're not making ANY of them look good.

Roussette · 17/04/2023 15:44

@michaelmacrae

Good point. I have always find it mightily weird they all have their own Press Offices too.

I remember at one point, K&W, H&M, shared one... then they split off to seperate ones. They had a 'join court'..... then not. Seperated.

Then it all started to go wrong

CathyorClaire · 17/04/2023 16:29

a very selective quote given I stated that I have worked full time for 40 years and never worked on my birthday.

You also said:

We all have at least 28 days leave and everyone could do the same.

And I pointed out millions can't. I don't really know what point you're trying to make TBH.

The court circular announces all royal birthdays not just Princess Anne’s.

Fills some of the acres of empty space I suppose.

CathyorClaire · 17/04/2023 16:36

I blame Andrew and Harry for most of this.

They've behaved awfully and yet faced little consequence for doing so.

It's not really a new thing though. They've both behaved awfully for years and got away with it

Blossomtoes · 17/04/2023 17:21

vera99 · 17/04/2023 08:45

During covid they took the piss - Whitehall and government were working their arses off (whatever we think about parties, Boris etc - they were, 16-hour days 7 days a week) whereas they luxuriated in their huge palaces with the occasional Zoom call working from home as it were. But they still got the same money.

As did a huge swathe of the population.

I've no time for them, but I have thought that too. They need ruthless messaging and comms and a rapid rebuttal team worthy of a government department with THE GRID.

Listening to LBC yesterday and one of the presenters was doing a coronation hour and there were a lot of seeming royalists pushing back against Camilla getting the full anointing stuff. They accepted that she had made Charles happy but found her 'elbowing' into the ritual a step too far.

Dunno why. I get piles myself from time to time, and it's no joke.

@vera99 Whats the Grid?

It was Alasdair Campbell's devilish news management tool for New Labour to ensure coherent, persuasive and amplified media messaging. Pretty much standard practice now for political parties and government departments.

9% say they are 'very interested'. What % are mildly interested? Or 'not interested but have no urge to promote republicanism'?

Yeah that's the crux of the matter for me. This is a definition of a toxic dysfunctional family. That has NO moral status in today's society - narcissism has long been cancelled. What's more everyone is enlightened and understands the narcissistic cycle of abuse and recognises it when they see it.

Another 24% say they’re fairly interested. So a third of those polled have a degree of interest. 25% say they have no interest.
