Sussex's snubbed on both sides of the Atlantic

Harry and Meghan will be invited to the coronation - by necessity - but this toxic pair will be kept at a careful arm's length by all and sundry, excluded from the balcony or carriage procession, and probably positioned somewhere suitably inconspicuous. Most of the family will be wary of them, most will wherever possible avoid them and the crowds will likely boo them. There will be no lucrative photo ops with William or Kate. The Wales children will be in the limelight, but Harry and Meghan's children will be excluded, due to age.

Meanwhile, over in the States, where they no doubt expected to be feted when they planned their dramatic departure from the UK, opinion polls reveal them to be less popular now than even Prince Andrew. South Park mocked them to general acclaim and The Cut published a contemptuous piece about the possible relaunch of the Tig last week.

They've been snubbed and excluded from every big social event, from the Met Gala to Obama's birthday party and Elton John's Oscar's bash. The only parties they have attended have been those hosted by social pariahs like Ellen de Generes.

They are coming across as increasingly desperate and embarrassing. It's hard to to see any possible comeback from here.

It's a public forum

Yes. I like being monitored. Course I do.

Plitvice · 20/03/2023 17:51

Eh, voila!

milti · 20/03/2023 18:27

@Blip interesting - are they even from the UK?

Blip · 20/03/2023 18:46

I think not

milveycrohn · 20/03/2023 19:01

I am actually a Royalist at Heart, but I, too, am a bit embarrassed about the coronation and all the paraphanalia that goes with it.
However, I should say, that it is NOT automatic that the crown goes to the next in line, etc. Which is why Charles had to be 'declared' as King.
However, I don't think it reasonable to compare to coronations hundreds of years ago, when the Monarch probably had real power. It seems to me that coronations have got more grand the less power the monarch has.
I hope all goes well on the day, but won't actually watch it live, though will probably watch edited highlights.

This whole thread is absolutely toxic.

I'm what I'd call 'mildly a monarchist' and I'm open to a republic if a suitable head-of-state alternative can be found.

I'm particularly concerned that we find an alternative that isn't just a replica of the current parliament election system with an endless parade of Boris clones elected who will not have what's best for the country at heart.

I think that Charles and William do care about the stewardship side of the job and work to preserve and protect the lands, historical buildings and art etc.

I don't know if you've ever watched any of the Peter Boghossian videos where he gets people to debate an issue by having them stand along a line of points from strongly agree to [question of the debate] to strongly disagree. And then he asks them why they pick their initial starting point and then keeps going back to them to see if hearing the others' views has changed their mind. He sometimes asks what would it take to make you move just one step away from their initial position.

I would say I am one step to the left of neutral on keeping the monarchy. What would make me take one step to neutral would be if Charles doesn't take steps to put this slimmed-down version of the monarchy into place. And what would make me take two firm steps to the pro-republican side would be if we by some terrible accident ended up with a monarch or heir who was clearly not going to be good for the role.

Here's a good example of the way this debate works - you can see in this discussion that people can change their position on a topic. It's known as street epistemology.

How interesting Wordler thank you for that link. I’m cooking dinner so haven’t haven’t quite grasped the concept yet but I will have a look!

I certainly agree about the Boris clones brw!

He did a series of sessions in the US and more recently in Romania and Hungry - those are harder to watch because the participants are doing it in a second language so it doesn’t always flow as well.

It's an interesting way of managing a debate because it investigates why you hold a particular belief and why someone else holds something different.

And it makes it feel safe for participants to be open to changing their minds.

He’s quite a good moderator because he keeps his own views very neutral no matter what the topic - the only time you see him get frustrated with people is when they don’t see the value of self examination and the point of questioning your own beliefs on a regular basis.

I think that's one post I can emphasise with. I haven't seen the Peter Boghossian videos but I can picture how they work and will actually watch that.

This whole thread is absolutely toxic.

Practically all of it is, you're right.
I can't be bothered to do any maths am not particularly good at maths but a significant proportion of it seems to be posters questioning the mental health of other posters who disagree with them, or suggesting they haven't a life because they post here - while posting here.

LaMarschallin · 20/03/2023 19:47

Ah.
Should have read: "while posting here themselves".

Hi @LaMarschallin, what I questioned was the fact that OP thought creating this thread was an amusement. I found that very odd and quite sad. The premise of this thread itself is toxic, OP then went on to accuse those who didn't join the hate/mock-fest of being paid trolls. I genuinely don't understand what folks expect when they create threads like this then complain of toxicity.

LaMarschallin · 20/03/2023 19:55

Oh good grief.
"empathise" not "emphasise" Blush

LaMarschallin · 20/03/2023 20:04

I didn't have any particular post or poster in mind, tatalan, it seemed just a general trend, so I'm not sure which post(s) of yours you're referring to.

Blip · 20/03/2023 17:34

Here is some interesting maths
Over 33% of the posts on this thread of over 500 posts are from 2.6% of the total number of posters ie just 2 individuals who have posted 172 times between them.

I think this is fairly representative of more general support for the Sussexes.

Wow. That's nuts. Is that what the mumsnet founder meant when she said people are 'deranged' when it comes to Meghan? Who on earth would have the time?! The thread was only started 2 days ago, and yesterday was mother's day.

CathyorClaire · 20/03/2023 21:02

This whole thread is absolutely toxic.

It's certainly quite a ride 🐎

It seems to me that coronations have got more grand the less power the monarch has.

I have to disagree. The last incumbent had a complete blowout of a day yet she had plenty of form for successful but down-low meddling in the monarchy's interests. The current incumbent is following faithfully in her footsteps.

This needs decorating in lights and glitter. Genius Blip 😂

Blip · 20/03/2023 21:13

Why thank you @purpledalmation

Roussette · 20/03/2023 21:17

Strange to call this thread toxic. Unless the OP primarily wanted an echo chamber with everyone agreeing with her that M&H are toxic, embarrassing and irrelevant.

And when that didn't happen and there was disagreement with those views, posters who disagreed are accused of all sorts of things... being Russian, being paid to post, Being part of some Squad or other, being trolls and all that is against Talk Guidelines because those continual accusatory posts by the OP were deleted.

There's your toxicity if you want to find it.

Is it though?
I think it's been a particularly unpleasant one.

Yes - all of that. And, as I mentioned, the implications that people on the opposite side to whichever the one the poster was on must be unwell or have empty lives...
I don't see why it's strange to call it toxic if there's toxicity in it.

@TooBigForMyBoots how rude

I offered kindly, sage advice to the OP. How was that rude @Blip?

michaelmacrae · 21/03/2023 00:50

I think Op thought she'd start a nice, spiteful thread, but didn't expect the number of posts disagreeing with her. She's run away now 😂😂😂

Exactly! It appears that toxicity, abuse and mockery towards H&M is acceptable, call it out and you become the problem.

Perhaps those accusations were the poster kindly trying to find justification for all the posts? Because otherwise, what's left? Obsession?
