Camilla walked past Maori greeters

Just been reading twitter that as part of Commonwealth Day, Maori subjects had been stationed outside Westminster Abbey to greet Charles and Camilla with a traditional greeting. Charles stopped and listened to them. Camilla carried on walking holding on to her hat in the wind.
It just looked incredibly rude of her.

Really bad optics.

Maybe Camilla had a good reason to keep walking but it looked really bad, it was obvious that Charles was trying to move on quickly. Also William and Kate gave nothing more than a cursory glance their way.

themessygarden · 16/03/2023 07:54

Although to be fair to W&K, they were no performance when they walked past, but they could have had a quick word.

Also, it would be really great if the thread title could also include the Maori word for the ceremony which is pōwhiri. I know it’s not widely known in the UK but it is important. 😀

Don’t be silly, MsRead, the thread is to criticise Camilla for being culturally insensitive and rude to the smiley brown people who were greeting them, before nose rubbing Charles!

It’s not like the posters engaging in the criticism care about their own cultural insensitivity and ignorance. That might require some self-reflection. 😀

User fail. Wish the app would keep up with the website.

@StormzyinaTCup It's called expressing an opinion and who are you to tell others what opinions they can or cannot express. My point is completely valid and believe me, there are many who think like I do.

littlebirdieblu · 16/03/2023 08:50

Honestly have you got nothing better to do, this thread is petty and ridiculous. Who actually cares 🤷‍♀️

jeffgoldblum · 16/03/2023 08:51

I'm confused. Were you AgathaTabathaBagatha earlier?

I'd guess she hates all this stuff. There are things called hat pins, or other suitable headgear for windy occasions. She doesn't want to be there. It looked very rude to me. The poor Maoris, what a kick in the teeth. I wonder if C+C had a row afterwards.

Who the heck would want to be the trailing Queen anyway. Get a divorce Mrs. and half the loot. You'd be mad not to.

All spoken in jest (kind of).

The poor Maoris

There is no "s" in the Māori language.

Where have I told you (or anyone else) what opinion they can have and where they can express it. You are perfectly entitled to your opinion but you don't speak on behalf of anyone else and you don't tell 'lovely, smiley brown people' when and where is appropriate/acceptable for them to be based on your own opinion/belief. I think there is a word for that.

I'm giving you a massive swerve now.

notanotheroneagain · 16/03/2023 09:09

Very rude.

Imagine spending decades chasing a crown and you are so rubbish at the job. Hat Pin, Weigh down herms etc. It would be easy to smile and explain to the woman that you just recovered from Covid and cannot do the traditional greeting.

What happened to royalists being so proud of royals doing the work no matter how rainy or dull it is.

I remember Camilla also sniggering and laughing at traditional throat singing in Canada.

StormzyinaTCup · 16/03/2023 09:20

I agree the optics were not good, however, in Camilla's defence it could be that the Māori were told in advance that Camilla wouldn't be stopping because eg Covid which would also explain why she carried on walking in front of Charles and into the Church? Just a thought.

Tescoland · 16/03/2023 09:28

I would have walked on too. If there had been haka, I would have run a mile.

donquixotedelamancha · 16/03/2023 09:35

It is part of her job to stop and listen and look vaguely interested. She is not ready to be polite?

She doesn't have a job. She has a position of deference and privilege because of who she married. There are no qualifying criteria, performance standards or working hours.

If she doesn't want to watch some commoners who flew across the globe to honour her and Charlie she doesn't need to. Nobody is going to make her- that's the point of being queen.

Now you might conclude it's a stupid idea for us all to give money and power to people just because of the family they were born/married into- but that's a very different thing to saying she must do certain things.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 16/03/2023 09:38

She's not really Queen material is she

Well, it's endlessly insisted that she looks like she'd be "fun to have a gin with", so perhaps that's mostly what matters to some?

It proves why the queen of the boudoir is usually a different character to the queen of the UK. I think we will see many more gaffes or 'F It I'm don' moments from her and a lot less support for the monarchy because of her.

Ladybug14 · 16/03/2023 10:16

Thing is, from what I've read - and of course this could be wrong, Camilla is perfect for Charles because she can manage his moods/depression/excessive introspection and so on

Diana would have made a wonderful Queen but she couldn't manage Charles at all.

In fairness, it appears Diana struggled with her own emotions, which probably meant she had no life space to manage Charles' lacks

So I guess.... even though (perhaps) Camilla won't be the greatest Queen , at least we'll have a more stable King, because of her

Plitvice · 16/03/2023 10:22

I see Camilla as being the type who would pull out all the stops to get competitive against another woman who happened to be younger, popular and considered beautiful and charismatic. I reckon that she became that perfect partner just to win him over from the other one as has been dissatisfied ever since her competition died out on her. Same for Charles regarding being the prized object.

She is putting on a brave face and trying to demonstrate that it was all worth it but I doubt she wanted the responsibilities of being a Queen at that stage of life.

It is not silly to ask politely that the proper words are used. The use of Te Reo is important and also it’s hongi not nose rubbing. Please don’t dismiss correct terms nor those who politely request that they are used.

FlyOnAWing · 16/03/2023 11:01

Thanks for letting us know that the ceremony is called Te Reo and hongi is the correct term.
I personally know very little about these ceremonies, but I assume Charles and Camilla are briefed beforehand. We are often told how much time they spend in research before each engagement. So Camilla will have known it was important and how she should respond. And any issues over things like covid would have been discussed and resolved. After all, surely they don't make these decisions on the hoof.

Camilla made sure that she is seen as the perfect one for Charles. Diana was moody because of Charles affairs and not giving her attention. She struggled because of Camila.

Without her in the picture, Charles would probably have been stable in a happy marriage with his trophy wife. There probably would have been more spares too.

I remember Diana saying Charles was 'hot and cold' with her and sometimes all over her 'like a rash'.

purpledalmation · 16/03/2023 11:07

I think it was incredibly windy that day. Weather warnings and so on.. she looked desperate to hold onto her hat and get out of the wind. Sure it was just an oversight.

purpledalmation · 16/03/2023 11:08

And she was just recovered from Covid?

FlyOnAWing · 16/03/2023 11:10

@purpledalmation so do you think Camilla did her research before this event and was briefed? Or do you think she just got in the car, turned up and walked into the Abbey making decisions on the hoof?

It was a very blustery day.

And still winter (i.e. cold).

Haven't read the whole thread so it may have been mentioned.....

Did you notice some of the Maori women were bare-footed? 😮

Rude of her I say to practically ignore them.
