The royal family

Camilla walked past Maori greeters

Just been reading twitter that as part of Commonwealth Day, Maori subjects had been stationed outside Westminster Abbey to greet Charles and Camilla with a traditional greeting. Charles stopped and listened to them. Camilla carried on walking holding on to her hat in the wind.
It just looked incredibly rude of her.

She just looked a bit rushed and concentrating on keeping her hat on? It didn't look like an intentional snub to me. Maybe she assume they were going to be at a later reception and she's see them again there?

Serenster · 15/03/2023 20:35

It’s a hongi, by the way. Not nose rubbing.

AgathaTabathaBagatha · 15/03/2023 20:36

I also hate this bringing out of all the lovely, smiley brown people to perform for this goddawful family. I wish the people themselves wouldn't do it, and I wish the RF had the sense to see how it's so dated and out of touch with the modern world. But the RF wouldn't do that, because they need it as their oxygen.

FlyOnAWing · 15/03/2023 20:37

I think she was being rude. But it will also reinforce the narrative that the Royal Family are racist.

Wow. British monarchy ignores indigenous people. How unusual.

Wow, how patronising. The Māori are immensely proud of their culture and appreciate the opportunity to pay respect to their head of state, and be recognised for doing so.

“smiley brown people performing”. Christ. Shaking my head here.

MathiasBroucek · 15/03/2023 20:44

Yawn. We have such a judgy society

HurricanesPoua · 15/03/2023 20:47

Biculturalism is moving at pace in Aotearoa NZ. And Māori cultural protocols like karakia, haka and hongi are a big part of this. Ignoring them looks really bad, and makes republicanism seem a much better option than the monarchy...

Was just about to jump on to say this too. Just to make people aware that touching the nose's together to greet in New Zealand is called a hongi.

Please educate yourself. This comment is revolting and racist.

I'm brown and from a commonwealth country myself. It makes me cringe when I see things like this. It's so, so out of date, and people like the royals don't appreciate it and it only serves to heighten their sense of superiority.

FlyOnAWing · 15/03/2023 22:19

@AgathaTabathaBagatha I agree with you. It was noticeable in a similar situation with black people dancing, Meghan joined in. I always wondered if she realised how awful the set up was so challenged it by joining them, which the dancers seemed very happy about.

I agree it's really outdated and I can't stand it. I'm also from a commonwealth country and just didn't like the way your comment was phrased. Maybe you didn't mean it that way. Totally agree though that the royal family are meaningless to much of the commonwealth now days.

AgathaTabathaBagatha · 15/03/2023 22:32

@Daisyismynameorisnot sorry, I should have put the offensive part in quotes to make it clearer that I was being sarcastic, it obviously didn't come across well.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 15/03/2023 23:08

I don't think she likes being Queen at all

She didn't have to marry him, and I imagine a woman of her age would have realised what would be involved ...

What a load of offensive codswallop and who are you to say they shouldn't be doing it. No one was forcing them to attend, they could have easily turned down the invitation but they didn't so maybe they are perfectly happy to be there. You may come from a commonwealth country but you don't speak for the whole of the commonwealth.

Well said - especially the part about not speaking for the whole of the commonwealth.

Charles did the nose-rubbing greeting. Maybe she walked on to avoid that

Especially if she had covid.

Ladybug14 · 16/03/2023 05:27

I've just watched the clip. It looked VERY rude. But I just don't think she would give a shit. Her hat seemed to be her main issue 🙄

Floppyelf · 16/03/2023 05:32

Well she does associate with jeremy clarkson. Birds of a racist feather.

ittakes2 · 16/03/2023 06:12

I don’t even like camilla and I think you are being petty. There was nothing obviously a reason she didn’t stop and it could be health related. I think if both of them had not stopped that would have been rude. Charles did not look to see where she was so it was obviously something they had discussed about her not stopping.

lollipoprainbow · 16/03/2023 06:14

She's not really Queen material is she. Clutching her hat like that would never have been done by QE. Walking past people instead of pretending to show a bit of interest. Disappointing.

I'm confused. Were you AgathaTabathaBagatha earlier?

MsRead · 16/03/2023 06:47

There’s been a fair amount of negative press about it in NZ. The Maori pōwhiri (greeting) is a hugely important ceremony and they will be well aware of its cultural significance having visited NZ and been to Waitangi Treaty Grounds in Northland. It is behaviours like these which are fuelling more questions in Commonwealth countries about the relevance of the Royals and the Commonwealth itself.

I have noticed a huge shift in attitudes towards the Royals since emigrating here nearly twenty years ago, this was a huge mistake on the part of Camilla. Kiwis are a lot more ambivalent/ openly critical of the Monarchy compared with the early 2000’s.

The Palace would be foolish not to respond to this issue, the never complain, never explain is just not good enough in this instance. Camilla was at work at a Commonwealth event and to ignore an organised welcome by Māori in that context is a serious error of judgment.

Also, it would be really great if the thread title could also include the Maori word for the ceremony which is pōwhiri. I know it’s not widely known in the UK but it is important. 😀
