William and Harry don't want their kids calling Camilla their grandmother!

I read that both Harry and William have made that very clear, that is not their grandmother, step or otherwise. She is only their father's wife.

I read that Kate and Camilla are not as close since Camilla became Queen and that Camilla says Kate is a 'lightweight'.

Camilla does seem like she'd enjoy a G&T or several more than Kate would. Grin

AmandaJonah · 11/03/2023 15:43

Big deal Camilla likes a drink. That does not mean she is a nice person.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 11/03/2023 15:51

I was making a joke based on the multiple meanings of "lightweight".

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 11/03/2023 16:22

My DD doesn't call my mum's husband grandad either. Totally normal.

Well she is not the grandmother, what's strange about that - have you been close to any families where this situation is present ?

Vitriolinsanity · 11/03/2023 23:17

Kids usually work out for themselves whether they think a grown up in their lives warrant a name or role. If a grown up is kind and takes them seriously they create a bond. My son likes to garden with my step father, he calls him Steve (which is his name), but it doesn't diminish the amount of pleasure they get from each others company.

GodspeedJune · 12/03/2023 00:02

My DPs parents divorced and both remarried. The step parents have assumed the titles of Grandpa and Nanny, and I must admit I do bristle at it. These two people are unrelated to my child, not grandparents, imo.

milveycrohn · 12/03/2023 07:13

My normal biological grandchildren do not call me Gran, Nan or similar. They have a name for me, and that's fine.
There is always a further complication in 'blended' families. I am surprised it matters

DrDinosaur · 12/03/2023 13:05

Of course not, she's not their grandmother.
My grandchildren call my partner by his name.

"If" that was affecting her ability to do the job - she has cancelled a number of engagements recently for some reason or other, then it is our business as their "work" is opening stuff, attending engagements and make social niceties with the civic populi without making gaffes.

Didn’t she cancel engagements because she had Covid?

perfectly acceptable reason for cancelling surely?

Her cancellations were because of Covid (last thing anyone wants is a high-profile person not cancelling and spreading t to people they meet. Official guidance remains to keep away from other people whilst covid +ve unless absolutely essential.

Also her BIL (who's been married to her sister for 50 years) died v recently. But I don't think she's cancelled engagements because of that. But not a nice time for her

nilsoften · 12/03/2023 14:31

Well the first two were covid and last week was 'bad weather' - if she is unable or unwilling to do the job long term then this should be declared.

sorry my second name has come back to haunt me...

YetMoreNewBeginnings · 12/03/2023 14:33

So having covid and not travelling in snow when we were told not to travel is being “unwilling”?

Surely you can do better than that?

vera99 · 12/03/2023 14:37

Like I said we are watching her - Charles has an unstinting attitude to work as Harry points out in Spare. Camilla less so - if she wants to carry the title of Queen then she will need to put the hours in, that's the deal. If crying off becomes a habit then it will become a problem for the Crown and if Charles and Camilla aren't seen often together then that will also be a problem. Optics and all that.

Relaxd · 12/03/2023 14:42

It’s ridiculous when the kids were born after C and C married. She is their (step) grandmother whether they are mature enough to acknowledge this or not. Let the grandkids call her what they want. Dictating in this way is more about their issues around their mum and the new wife. Diana wasn’t alive when they were born but is genetically their grandmother obviously. Camilla and how she is referred to, does not diminish or alter this in any way.

Not as big a problem as merrily spreading covid would have been.

Vitriolinsanity · 12/03/2023 17:20

Covid and snow seem reasonable cancellation reasons to the majority of right-minded people surely?

nilsoften · 12/03/2023 19:43

Think of it like a line manager, and you've had 3 sick notes in the last 2 months. At some point you will raise eyebrows at the very least. If it becomes a recurrent pattern the press will major on it, you can be sure and remember these events are in diaries many months before the local great and the good have been corralled and marshalled to put on their very best for this auspicious occasion.

She's had one episode of sickness and one snow disruption.

That's not attendance management territory by a long chalk

She can 'retire' and avoid this depressing plebeian scrutiny but then of course another gulf opens up.

WinnieTheW0rm · 12/03/2023 20:04

No-one would be on the receiving end of "scrutiny" for that though

That’s just talking silly.

If she “retired” she’d be subject to endless scrutiny about her health, her marriage and papped every time she went out.

Shes a woman who didn’t spread covid round and heeded travel warnings (for herself and those going to events) in adverse weather.

Its nonsense to suggest it’s anything else. Even the Daily mail wouldn’t go that far with that one.
