The royal family

Why is the Queen commenting on the Roald Dahl controversy?

I thought the Royal Family were supposed to be uncontroversial and unpolitical, so why is the Queen getting involved in this? It is nothing to do with her, she did not have to say anything?

Or have the rules changed and they are now going to be more controversial and political?

Camilla is the Queen.
Have you not noticed the Consort part has been dropped.

Formally / Legally dropped ???

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 25/02/2023 12:33

Apparently Beatrice's husband's title (Count) is not officially recognised in the UK, so she is 'Mrs Eduardo Mapelli Mozzi' - perhaps we hear it less often because it's a more difficult name to remember and pronounce than 'Jack Brooksbank'.

IcedPurple · 25/02/2023 12:33

Maireas · 25/02/2023 12:27

I bloody would. And have done!
I don't hear that about Beatrice, maybe she objects?

I think Bea is more low key so we don't hear that much about her. Pretty sure she's often referred to as Mrs. Mapelli Mozzi, although of course unlike Zara she does have a royal title too.

Maireas · 25/02/2023 12:34

Yes, or maybe it's like @PlaitBilledDuckyPuss says. You're right about Eugenie, she keeps a higher profile with insta etc

His "title" is not officially recognised anywhere. Italy is a republic and abolished all royal and aristocratic titles back in 1949.

DappledThings · 25/02/2023 12:36

Why is it not possible in your eyes Dappledthings to merely prefer one woman over another?

Quite a few people I know in my circle of friends are not particularly supportive of Camilla as it happens and we are all sane, well-read intelligent women thanks.
Preferring is one thing. Not being particularly supportive also perfectly normal. I have a minor preference for Camilla over Diana I suppose if I ever actually had to choose. And I don't actively support either. What's ludicrous is this insistence that that preference means anything, that it makes any sense to claim that Camilla isn't really the Queen, or that people are going to be "disturbed" by her coronation.

It's all so over-blown and really does make people sound very silly indeed.

Xol · 25/02/2023 12:36

I will never, ever, ever use the stand alone term 'Queen' for her. Never. And I wish people would stop indulging it.

You carry on, @ItsShiela. Nobody, least of all the Queen, will give a fuck, and you'll look increasingly weird, but if it makes you happy, so be it.

Formally / Legally dropped ???

It hasn't been dropped in any sense - it's being used on the official website of the Royal Family which I linked earlier.

All such things come under the umbrella of a style. Members of the Royal Family, particularly those who hold multiple titles, can choose to style themselves in various ways. Camilla styling herself 'Queen Consort' has no legal significance, it isn't a reflection of her status. She could style herself 'Queen' if she wanted to. It's no different really from if your name is 'Margaret' you could style yourself 'Maggie' 'Meg' 'Peggy' 'Marge' etc.

Nothing political about sticking up for free speech and criticising this utter buffoonery.

Exactly although if we can do it today then how much of human history has also been rewritten etc

Xol · 25/02/2023 12:41

I was very fond of Diana

Did you actually know her, @Saffronpotatoes67?

ArcaneWireless · 25/02/2023 12:41

@Maireas one back for you cherub 😘

Because she is Queen Consort. She is not The Queen. There is a difference. Charlotte if she gets the chance will be the next actual Queen.

The Queen is dead, and the next actual one won't be til/if Charlotte gets the throne. I'm the one using the formal official term which is QueenConsort. Those calling her Queen are the ones who look weird.

Legally never present. At the proclamation at the Privy Council, she was Queen Camilla.

Yes, technically. As were Queen Alexandra, Queen Elizabeth the wife of King George VI, Queen Mary etc. All Queen Consorts and also just known As Queen Alexandra or the the Queen at other times.

Calling her Queen Consort is not incorrect, neither is calling her Queen Camilla. They are different styles of the same title.

The Consort bit isn't the gotcha you seem to think it is.

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 25/02/2023 12:50

Queen Consort is the style being popularly used because:

'The Queen' still brings to mind Elizabeth II for many people

There's a hang-over from Diana's 'I want to be Queen of Hearts' days

It wasn't used for the last few Queens consort, but the circumstances are different for Camilla - the last few Queens Consort didn't follow a reigning Queen, and there was no deceased princess in the question.

DappledThings · 25/02/2023 12:51

ItsShiela · 25/02/2023 12:46

Will you maintain the same approach when William becomes King? Will you insist on using the full title of Queen Consort for Catherine or will she be just Queen Catherine to you when both, as with Camilla, will be correct?

What about Diana? Would you have insisted on calling her Queen Consort too if she and Charles had never divorced?

medianewbie · 25/02/2023 12:52

@PlaitBilledDuckyPuss that's both interesting and helpful - Thank you.

medianewbie · 25/02/2023 12:55

@EdithWeston Ah, I wasn't aware of that.

EdithWeston · 25/02/2023 12:58

@medianewbie

It gave me quite a jolt when Penny Mordaunt stated that the Queen was present and to be one who signed, until I realised that she meant the new Queen!

No I don’t consider Diana an “icon”
or “Queen of hearts” or whatever mawkish sentimental phrase the press has made up for her

I think Diana herself started the "queen of hearts" thing:

"I'd like to be a queen of people's hearts, in people's hearts, but I don't see myself being the queen of this country"

I agree it's mawkish though.

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 25/02/2023 13:05

Only people who are likely to outlive Prince George have a realistic chance of seeing another Queen Regnant in their lifetimes. This would be if George has a firstborn daughter, or if George dies childless and Charlotte outlives him. Barring abdication or untimely death, this means if you were born before approx 2010 you have probably seen your last Queen Regnant.

medianewbie · 25/02/2023 13:07

Rather to my surprise, I found myself moved to file past HMQEII coffin (in Edinburgh). I respected that she'd tried to do what she saw as her 'job' for the Country for 70 years. I have no respect for Camilla (or Charles for that matter) as both strike me as self-indulgent, smug, overprivileged whingers . So, when I hear 'King Charles' or 'Queen Camilla', in my head I will say: 'Sez you, you self-styled (Dahl-ian)Twits'. I'm aware no one but me will give a flying fart, least of all the Twits involved :)

Yes, she did - in the infamous Bashir interview in 1995. She said 'I want to be Queen of hearts - Queen of people's hearts' and the press picked up on 'Queen of Hearts'.

After Diana died, Tony Blair, who was only 3 months into his premiership and still very popular, picked up the Queen of Hearts idea again in his eulogy, and the image was everywhere.

I thought Blair dubbed her “The People’s Princess”.
