Harry claiming that Meghan can make her own clothes...

"He asked, “How much could it possibly cost to house and feed Meg? I wanted to say, ‘She doesn’t eat much, you know! And I’ll ask her to make her own clothes, if you like’.”"

(Page 370)^

For me, this was one of the strangest passages in the whole book. How could a self-made millionaire (Meghan) be so poor she would either need to have her FIL buy her clothes or she'd have to make them herself?

I'm not slagging off Meghan here BTW, as these are Harry's words, not hers. Why didn't Harry take responsibility for buying Meghan what she needed? Any decent husband would get a job to support his wife rather than see her not eat much and make her own clothes!

After she’s fashioned her clothes from some old, sturdy but practical (bit of a 70s garish pattern but no one’s looking too closely) curtains in Buckingham Palace she’ll sweep the yard…She’ll stitch carefully by hand. No sewing machines for her!

Later, she can cleanse & refresh them in the palace well, those washer/dryers have a v negative environmental footprint…Shows green credentials!

She’ll sing & dance as she does so & bluebirds will gently come to rest on her head & hands…puppies will frolic & gambol, if you listen, very closely all the seals in the world will chorus ‘AROO’ together…Where is her prince, her love today? Notes to herself she must hide/destroy all the dog bowls in kingdom - ancient Legend tells ‘he who toucheth or falleth on ye old ceramic dogbowls shall fall & die & necklace shall breaketh & shall needeth therapist as shards shall be injurious and enchanted’. Does she spy the sexy suave shame I didn’t have first dibs King in waiting, Willy the Wicked on the horizon?…

Making your own clothing is not the frugal approach these days. Fabric bought retail is expensive.

Doesn’t he say she makeS her own, implying she did it already? I found it really odd, I wondered if it was another example of him not really having a clue.

Windbeneathmybingowings · 24/01/2023 19:48

Maybe she made those bridesmaids dresses which explains a lot

AttentionAll · 24/01/2023 19:55

Sounds like sarcasm to me.

Wonnle · 24/01/2023 19:56

GOD NOT AGAIN !!!!!

Remagirl · 24/01/2023 19:57

Context us everything. In the book Harry made this comment in response to his father saying he couldn't support H & M as he was already paying for W & C. It was meant to be sarcastic. He thought it but didn't express it.

And thy prince will raise his furrowed brow and say 'how much?' for the glittering shoes that teeter to the clouds and back, and she will smile her meg smile bewitching her prince and his frost nipped penile praises the heavens above and the heaves below for this wonder, for this enchanted princess and as this beautiful story plays out, as they dance and play and blow up the the everlasting pillars of the palace for riches dear. One can see two small children afraid, hidden in the dark forest, eyes wide, but they are invisible and unseen by the indulgent couple with only eyes for each other and both feed from greed.

I think that was the initial (poor) translation from the Spanish book. The quote in the OP is the accurate one.

Remagirl · 24/01/2023 20:00

I am reading the book despite my misgivings. I have to say if the narrative is accurate I don't blame them for wanting to live their own lives. The British press are absolute bastards.

Aarohi · 24/01/2023 20:05

Isn't Harry just saying that it seemed odd to him at the time that his father had never said anything before about the arrangement that he paid everything for Harry, never mentioned that it was a strain or unaffordable or might have to end at some point, until that day? Harry was over 30 already and his dad must have had some idea he'd likely marry someone at some point and maybe even have children, and it had never been discussed before. Harry is saying the addition of costs specifically for Meghan seemed relatively minor, from Harry's perspective, in the grand scheme of things.

The passage right before that talks about the arrangement that William and Harry's expenses were paid by their father in return for their being available to do Royal Family work. It sounds like his father had never previously suggested that Harry should or even could get independent employment. There's also a passage much earlier in the book where Harry is suggesting all kinds of jobs he'd like to do and thinks he could do and Charles says no to every one except the army.

I totally agree.
And many on MN just repeat the same lies as if they were fact.

One of many.

Maireas · 24/01/2023 20:33

I don't think that anything Harry writes or says is a completely reliable version if what happened.

Maireas · 24/01/2023 20:37

Well Meghan seemed to spend most of her time as a working royal in custom Givenchy and Dior, paid for by Charles, so clearly that idea didn't last long.

3peassuit · 24/01/2023 20:38

According to Harry, she all but walks on water.

Remagirl · 24/01/2023 20:42

A few red top readers here I think 🤔

JADS · 24/01/2023 20:52

He's being sarcastic and thinks he's being clever, but at the same time manages to show how out of touch he is. Primark is much cheaper than making your own clothes! I wonder if he thought he was going to get a big wedge of extra cash when he married, but Charles didn't give him as much as he expected?

CathyorClaire · 24/01/2023 20:55

We haven't seen 'Spare - The Non Equal Sequel' yet...

Capri3 · 24/01/2023 21:07

I haven’t read the book, but IIRC PH previously said that “there was no money for Meghan”. I have always thought that meant that H&M wanted to be paid an additional amount for MM being a working royal as opposed to the usual arrangement whereby the couple continue to receive the same amount (as per W&K). Which would explain the “I can’t believe I’m not being paid for this” comment that MM made during one of their tours.

😂😂😂😂😂

Maireas · 24/01/2023 21:09

Well there clearly was plenty of money for both of them, so your point is probably right, @Capri3

Maybe Charles had tried explaining to Harry on many occasions, but Harry was too busy picking pizza out the sink whilst maintaining a conversation with a bin to pay attention? Druggies and pissheads aren't renowned for remembering what they've been told.
