The royal family

AIBU to think lots of engagements are not "work"?

babsanderson · 20/01/2023 17:07

Just reading the Court Circular and I am struck once again by the reality that many engagements can not remotely be called work.
So just looking at January so it is clear I am not cherry picking over many months, there are the following engagements.

  1. Anne went to a Dinner with the Caledonian Hunt
  2. The Duke of Kent attended a carol service
  3. Duchess of Gloucester, Patron, the Arts Society, today held a Meeting via telephone with Dr. Florian Schweizer (Chief Executive). So basically a phone call.
  4. Anne attended lunch at the Royal Yachting Association.

It is not even the time of year to attend Film Premiers, tennis matches, football matches and theatre premiers.

It’s unusual for them to do one engagement s week. Normally it’s a lot more. I suspect you know this.

and as someone who has had to entertain clients. It’s work. It’s not like being out to dinner with your mates. It’s work

EarthPunchingBack · 21/01/2023 09:31

@Summatoruvva the royals are the very definition of nepo babies but you’ll never get their forelock tugging subjects to see that 😄

For the ardent Supporters on here: do you think H&M work? Was Spare hard work? Chatting on Zoom calls with the ghost writer sounds more like therapy to me, which any other person PAYS for, not GETS paid.

Does Harry turn up at 9am to his roles at the can’t remember the names places? Like hell he does anything for them apart from having done a website photo.

Meghan…. What work has she done since leaving Suits? And was that indeed work? According to one poster on here “learning lines” is not work Confused

What on earth has this to do with the thread?

We are talking about engagements for the working RF. Not 2 people who live thousands of miles away and are not on the royal payroll

Do you want to start a thread talking about H&M and their 'work' instead of derailing this one?

Coxspurplepippin · 21/01/2023 09:38

I imagine ThighMistress was referring to posts earlier in the thread comparing highly paid celebs who seem to do very little for their money.

No one has first hand experience, neither you, nor me. We can have opinions though. We're allowed those on here!

Unless their huge army of staff are sat twiddling their thumbs doing nothing, one can assume they do some research for them. If not, they should be made redundant and the whole organisation slimmed down. It's hard to find how many staff they have... some reports say over 150, who knows, it's very opaque.

No one has first hand experience, neither you, nor me.

This absolutely baffles me. How can you possibly know - with such utter certainty - the experiences of posters on mumsnet (12 million of us?). That really is quite the assumption.

ThighMistress · 21/01/2023 09:40

Always the “not relevant” …..

I posted because, rather coincidentally, the critics here of the rf duties are the same people lauding M&H’s every move (apart from Oprah, yada yada….).

Bloody hell, the amount of times you've brought Andrew into a H and M thread.

I just find it strange to be questioning H&M's work ethic on this thread which is about the RF and how hard they work, or not work. H&M don't do royal engagements, so we can't question how hard they work can we?

Happy to talk about Andrew on here though Grin
The disgraced Royal who lives a life of luxury....

HaveYouSeenNancy · 21/01/2023 09:55

The money and lifestyle H and M have is due to their connection to the royal family, or his inheritance from them. Harry has just made a reported £20 million from complaining about the royal family, his life within it and how difficult a job it is. That seems fairly relevant on a thread about the royal family's work.

Totally disagree but there you go.

If that's the case, why aren't they on the CC? Where can I see what royal engagements they have?!

OfcourseSpringRoll · 21/01/2023 10:06

It’s not like digging coal but in the past I have had to entertain and give talks to a few hundred people multiple times, the dressing up and looking smart minding what you say and being interested in boring crap and making small talk is awful.

Yes, I would hate it too. And in addition, cameras in your face, your every move, outfit, interaction and facial expression picked apart. Do you know enough? Yes, then it was handed to you by aides, No and it's because you're lazy. .. and so on.

TrashyPanda · 21/01/2023 10:14

Roussette · 21/01/2023 08:45

They don't do the research themselves! They have staff for that, Private Secretaries and aides... huge resources at their fingertips to do all the preparation for them. And the travel is in luxury... helicopter, back seat of a limousine, royal train (like Charles has used this week so he could have a nap on it)
For all you know, they are given a bullet point brief they digest before a short visit, smile, nod and move on if you've had enough.

That’s how most of us learn things - from the research of others.

starting in primary school.

Everything.

the thread title does not exclude H&M

how peculiar to think it does.

Because they decided they wanted to use their contacts to get as much dosh as possible, while still trading on their status.

and the late Queen told them to naff off.
or maybe that was Princess Anne.

Well... we'll have to agree to disagree then won't we?

A thread about how hard the RF work, their royal engagements, the Court Circular, who does their prep for them, how many engagements they undertake in a year etc.

And H&M who do not undertake Royal engagements

Hmm
erehj · 21/01/2023 10:21

They're definitely all work activities and the people are beyond retirement age. I hope and intend not to be doing any work at all at that age.

I hope they do enjoy their work sometimes. I would hope that for everyone, especially for those still working at that advanced age. It would be a miserable life if you hated every minute of it (see Harry.)

Those things would be exhausting and I would HATE to do them at any age. I understand that some aspects of their life might appear envy inducing, but I don't think it's all it's cracked up to be.

If you don't want a monarchy then fine, that's a view . And they wouldn't do any engagements, easy or hard.

If you want a monarchy then this is the role that the royals are there to perform. This is the job.

What is the nature of your complaint? What is it that you would like them to do differently? Run up and down outside the venue first so they are visibly pained and exhausted to your satisfaction?

The thread is about “engagements”

in the RF topic

harry will always be part of the royal family by birth, no matter how badly he behaves.

there is no possible disagreement.

TrashyPanda · 21/01/2023 10:24

H&M who do not undertake Royal engagements

and who memorably ditched a royal engagement with the Marines to go to a film premier instead and were caught touting for business for Meghan.

that was so disrespectful.

(Looking forward to hearing about Harry's royal engagements, don't think there'll be any this year somehow Grin)

in the RF section?

and that H is a member of the RF?

what is there to disagree about?

(answer: nothing)
