The royal family

AIBU to think lots of engagements are not "work"?

babsanderson · 20/01/2023 17:07

Just reading the Court Circular and I am struck once again by the reality that many engagements can not remotely be called work.
So just looking at January so it is clear I am not cherry picking over many months, there are the following engagements.

  1. Anne went to a Dinner with the Caledonian Hunt
  2. The Duke of Kent attended a carol service
  3. Duchess of Gloucester, Patron, the Arts Society, today held a Meeting via telephone with Dr. Florian Schweizer (Chief Executive). So basically a phone call.
  4. Anne attended lunch at the Royal Yachting Association.

It is not even the time of year to attend Film Premiers, tennis matches, football matches and theatre premiers.

Of course it’s work. They didn’t go there by choice for a fun night out with their friends.

So exactly like most CEOs then.

And MPs.

Roussette · 21/01/2023 10:42

Lordy. As I say, we will agree to disagree. Just because you keep repeating yourself and won't let it go, doesn't make your opinion more valid than mine.

I won't be answering you again. Although I might comment on the engagements the RF carry out which is the point of the thread.

cough Coronation? cough 😀

The Duchess of Sussex’s IMDb entry lists the Platinum Jubilee and the Queen’s funeral.

Pot - meet kettle!

there is nothing to disagree about.
no matter how often you protest, you are spitting into the wind. This is a thread about RF engagements. Just because you don’t want H&M mentioned does matter. You aren’t thread monitor.

shock

horror

those were royal engagements?

carried out by H&M?

heavens to Betsy.

Roussette · 21/01/2023 11:02

Is IMDB the equivalent of the Court Circular if you aren't a working member of the RF?
I didn't know!

(Must be ! Because her attendance at those events aren't on the CC!)

So what?

we all know she was there.

we saw her and Harry with our own eyes.

carrying out Royal engagements.

It kind of is if you’re an actor. It’s your CV, why put those events on there if you don’t consider it work?

No idea how IMDB works? Does the actor concerned write it? Or is it written by the organisation IMDB... pondering that one. I use it a lot for film reviews but never look at Actors on there unless I can't remember a film someone was in which happens frequently lol-

I think it's a bit like Wiki, not sure. Interesting.

TrashyPanda · 21/01/2023 13:24

What does it matter?

you know they were at these events in an official capacity.

there is no doubt about it.

She's not a working royal so won't be on the cc

Nobody said she would 🤷‍♀️

@Roussette

You said the funeral should be retained in full as it was a state / royal occasion on another thread yesterday.

Surely then H&M’s attendance falls under the official engagement umbrella then ?

Quite possibly. But that is not what we are talking about on this thread. This is about lots of royal family 'engagements' not being work. H&M have done two official 'engagements' then in 2022. Platinum Jubilee and Queen's funeral (which was a State occasion yes). That's them sorted as far as the subject matter of this thread then!

TrashyPanda · 21/01/2023 17:57

Oh the self-appointed thread monitor strikes again

the rest of us are talking about RF engagements.

one person is demanding H&M are not discussed. Despite them doing royal engagements in the past and when they visited the U.K. last year.

thankfully, nobody agrees with them.

you do have to wonder why she is so adamant they are not to be discussed? What possible motive could there be to stifle discussion..

You are perfectly right.

and a great example of somewhat muddled thinking.

Roussette · 21/01/2023 18:21

So pleased we have sorted out H&M's royal engagements! We now know.

Two in 2022.

TrashyPanda · 21/01/2023 18:42

To be fair, they never did many, even before they went off in a huff.

And then they said wanted to continue doing engagements, but they also wanted to moneterise their royal titles.

funnily enough, the Queen decided they weren’t worth it.

milveycrohn · 21/01/2023 22:47

Well, I consider the normal office Christmas Party as work (unpaid as well).
So, from my point of view these engagements ARE work.
There is also a lot of background work that goes on, not just research.
They must know who the main people are, who they will be talking to, etc.
They must all work out what they are wearing, and this goes for the men as well as the women, and on foreign tours, to know the protocol, etc for different countries.
However, it may not be work in the fact it is not a 9-5 job, but the definition of a 'wroking royal' is someone who represents the crown.
Maybe instead of attending a film premier all glammed up, they would have liked a night in just chilling, etc, who knows. So, therefore, I consider it work.

There are many jobs that are based around 'networking', and the fact that it may not be a 9-5 job, as such, does not make it any the less, work.

AttentionAll · 21/01/2023 23:27

How much background research do they really read?
At Kate's latest nursery visit she said how important nurseries are to a child's development and that there needs to be a holistic approach to children's development. Its hardly rocket science that requires swotting up for days in advance.

For most occasions they need to know who they will be introduced to their background as to why they have been selected to meet and a personal interest ....but they could be introduced to 20 or so people and it's often one of several such introductions in a day. A nursery visit is probably one of the easier engagements

Sugarfree23 · 22/01/2023 01:05

A nursery is probably easy but Kate would have needed to know who she was meeting, why that particular nursery, any particular issues to ask about, language, disabilities, poverty.
They need to be informed or they'll end up looking like a fud.

AttentionAll · 22/01/2023 01:24

@Sugarfree23 So a 5-10 minute briefing in the car journey there?

I guess you've never prepped a principal for visit? Especially not when a visit is related to a core project (in this case the Princess's Early Years project)

10 mins in back of car is far from adequate.
