This was in a yougov poll. Support for the monarchy is at an all time low amongst younger people.

Only 52%? People need educating in this country. But education has been removed by the Tories. I can't understand how the RF (aka Bunch of Parasites) are so popular. They have never done anything for anyone, but are handed out LOADS of dosh. It's a weird and corrupt system .

You need to see details of the survey- only 30% of the 18- 24 group are « positive » about the royal family, about 50% were negative and the rest didn’t have an opinion (didn’t give a toss)

In my late teens / early 20s I didn't get the point of the RF either. I mean I never thought what I'd replace them with or how that would work. I never gave consideration to the positives of a RF. Cos you don't when you're so young. Then you grow up and you start to see problems with elected politicians, other elected heads of states. You start to appreciate the stability of a monarch.
Only on MN is there such an obsession with how wise our young people are. When actually they are just as narrow minded, uninformed and easily influenced as we all were at that age.

Brilliant post - worth reposting.

I’m absolutely ‘positive about young people’ and respect them enormously but sick to death of our society being an experiment for youthful idealism that does not necessarily reflect the wisdom that comes to bear when you’ve been around a bit and see how life really works.

The monarchy, like a lot of things, isn’t perfect, but the alternatives could be a lot worse and once you’ve chopped off their heads there is no going back. We are just another grey, poor republic with a grey elected and therefore corruptible elected head of state. No pageantry, no heritage, no history, no pride, no global soft power.

Happyvalleyfan · 20/01/2023 20:18

She was making a point- and of course she’s allowed who she wants at the service
Some of the posters have only been querying what message this sends to others, including victims of sexual abuse?

Yes I know he’s not been found guilty- but that’s not the point - appearances and values demonstrated are important in public events.

Not true.

35% support the monarchy, 34% don’t and the rest (31%) don’t know.

Which column are you referring to? Those figures don’t equate to any of data for 18-24 yo group in the yougov link

Blossomtoes · 20/01/2023 20:32

Apologies. I was looking at December’s survey. I expect February’s will be different again.

Pride in what exactly?

Colonialism, unethical wealth acquisition, racism, contribution to the slave trade, protecting sex offenders? You're proud of this and think young people lack wisdom for admitting it's actually messed up?

MarshaMelrose · 20/01/2023 20:34

If anyone deserves to be at Prince Philips memorial service, it's his wife and four children. Do people really begrudge a son going to his father's memorial service? 🤔

Of course not- some of us are querying the prominence of Andrew-
which will have been done on purpose - why? Do you think she wasn’t advised of the optics?

Blossomtoes · 20/01/2023 20:42

I don’t think she gave a shit about the “optics”. It was the memorial service for her husband of 74 years, she knew she wasn’t long for this world and, after 70 years of dutiful service, she did exactly what felt best for her. Good for her.

Happyvalleyfan · 20/01/2023 20:52

Good that you think the monarch doesn’t need to give a s* what their subjects think. You’re really promoting their cause.

MarshaMelrose · 20/01/2023 20:53

She was 95. If she wanted her son on the front row, then good for her. It's not like PA has been even charged with a crime.

She could do what she likes, but people don't have to respect it just because she was old and privileged.

I’m not trying to promote their cause. I think when you’re nearly 96 and have given 70 years of service you’ve earned the right to put yourself first.

curlymacv · 20/01/2023 21:01

I'm in my 20s and don't know a single person who cares about the monarchy. But I do live in Scotland so maybe that's why.
I don't think I'd notice if the monarchy was abolished, what difference would it actually make?

Here’s the December data - consistent with Nov and January data too!

And she wasn't the first or last person to be widowed.

What other special privileges would you like people to have just because they're widowed?

If she wasn't willing to serve her country above her sex offender son she should have resigned as monarch. Pretty low standards we have in this country I guess.

EarthPunchingBack · 20/01/2023 21:10

@Blossomtoes ”dutiful service” is such an interesting concept isn’t it?

I see so many people serving this country in so many different roles, with so little reward. The queen lived a life of unparalleled luxury and privilege. I struggle to give a shit about the “dutiful service” 🙄.

But come on, she had to live in a castle, have a yacht, wasn't expected to do a real day's work ever and also could bypass the law (inheritance tax). And then she can walk around with her disgrace of a son during services the tax payers fund.

Her life sounds.. so hard. Hoarding all that wealth and being proud of your inbreeding's family racist, colonial culture must have been a great dutiful effort.

Some people are honestly so brainwashed by the monarchy they'll never open their eyes 😂

Having your son with you at your husband’s memorial service isn’t a “privilege”. It’s something any widow, whatever their status, would take for granted. It’s amazing how people think it’s sheer idiocy to “look up” to the monarchy yet insist on holding them to a higher standard than the rest of us.

You’ve clearly got an axe to grind but I saw plenty of people of all creeds and colours lining the streets and talking about ‘pride’ in Britain during the spectacle of the Queen’s jubilee. It was a great moment of national unity.

The whole western world has been built on slavery and racism. Tearing up the RF which is largely respected across the globe won’t repair that but miseries like you are never satisfied. 🙄

Her son isn't a sex offender as far as we know. He hasn't even been charged with a crime, never mind convicted. If she wants her son at her husband's and his father's memorial service, then that's up to her. I would say the same for other widows as well.
