William was in the wrong re Harry’s wedding

Re William didn’t stay over with Harry the night before his wedding and caused a fuss about having to go to the hotel he was in the night before for dinner. As his only brother and as best man he should’ve been there with him. We hear all the time how wonderful and amazing Catherine’s family are - surely on the occasion of his only sibling getting married her parents could’ve come over to help her with her newborn and the children for the night. They have nannies and cleaners and staff so not exactly short of help in general.

my DH has only one brother too. He got married when my baby was 6 weeks old post a difficult c-section. We went to the hotel for 3 nights - so DH could have drinks with his brother and bridal party the night before, the night of the wedding and the night after the wedding. I was fine with this as it was his only siblings wedding. Yes it was difficult for me and exhausting but it was important to us both that we made a big effort for his DBro especially as (like Harry) they were missing a parent at the wedding.

from my view either William or Catherine or both didn’t care enough to put themselves out for Harry and his wedding which reflects poorly on them.

It was USD 125 (not sure how it was promoted in ££). A lot, for a white shirt, yes.

OrcastralManoeuvresInTheDark · 19/01/2023 13:49

I googled the SmartWorks collection. I could only find the price for the Nonoo shirt in US dollars. It’s $125. £101. More expensive comparatively than the other items. Much more expensive than a white shirt from Hobbs for example.

alanabennett · 19/01/2023 13:50

I agree with you, OP. His only sibling was getting married and his wife had endless help on hand, should she have needed it.

I actually think this is typical of the changing attitudes many people have towards putting themselves out in any way for someone else - i.e. they won't.

OrcastralManoeuvresInTheDark · 19/01/2023 13:50

X posts. Thanks @Serenster

@Serenster
The Smartworks Capsule was all about respectability and dignity. Which is why it was not exclusively Primark or other low quality brands.
In her speech, MM point out that when you look good in great clothes you will feel more confident, boosting your chances of getting the job. And that is what is needed at an interview - not self conscious and doubt. Even the brands you name are very well regarded and not cheap tart.

Later on, she arranges a donation of the same handbag that she uses to the charity - a confidence boost if you have been down about not having a job, you have the same brand as a princess and duchess .

So, yes, Misha Nonoo is a cool brand, a staple for the Grazia fashionistas. It's a bit like Fiona Finds - very cool and exclusive - very exclusive, but well known in London. The kind that Kings Road etc. would shop at. Not sure why you feel MM should search far and wide for this, when she has someone right on her phone.

What a shame no British designer is capable of producing a plain white shirt.

But Harry is a prick. He’d probably been being a prick to Kate and Will for months in the run up. Meghan is a bitch, and had been causing trouble within the wider family for months.

Totally understand Will having zero excitement/interest in hanging out and celebrating with Harry. Doesn’t feel celebratory when your brother is marrying a manipulative arsehole that’s trying to tear the family apart.

Plus, young kids, and a newborn. I don’t blame him for a second.

I couldn’t agree more!

The autocorrect typo in the above sentence has really made me laugh.

Serenster · 19/01/2023 13:57

The Smartworks Capsule was all about respectability and dignity.

Such a shame it’s impossible to feel respectable and dignified in a shirt that costs less than £100.

notanotheroneagain · 19/01/2023 14:13

Wait, hold on. You are aware that if you are poor you don't actually pay for the clothes right? It's a charity that gives them to you.

Smartworks has a clothes swap and 'buying for another woman' scheme. Meaning your fears about poor women paying for an expensive shirt, are unfounded. Yes, they have a shop, but you are not obliged if you are poor.

There is also an option for women who are not poor, but need to change jobs because they are not fulfilled. Advise is given about jobs etc.

Serenster · 19/01/2023 14:19

Bless your heart. I, and organisations I have worked for, have supported Smartworks long before Meghan was involved. 😀

Serenster · 19/01/2023 14:21

(And if they’d picked a plain white shirt from say, Next, that cost £30, just imagine how many ore they may have had to distribute to the women whom they help!)

notanotheroneagain · 19/01/2023 14:26

You worked for Smartworks? Really? Could not tell.

But you also miss the point that a Next swap is not the same as Misha one. Hence MM arranges for expensive handbags, that she her self uses. To boost these women and show they are all equal.

Especially as the shirt had to be ordered online from New York.

Who is going to want to pay over £100 for a plain white shirt, plus postage and customs charges, only to risk it not fitting and having to send it back at considerable expense and hassle? When you could find similar offerings on the High Street for a fraction of the price?

It’s just buying in to meaningless consumerism. And Misha Nonoo’s involvement smacks of cronyism. Also what the hell would Meghan know about interview clothes, she has never worked in an office has she? Suits wasn’t a documentary you know and most paralegals don’t wear Tom Ford to the office

OrcastralManoeuvresInTheDark · 19/01/2023 14:44

Wait, hold on. You are aware that if you are poor you don't actually pay for the clothes right? It's a charity that gives them to you.

Are you aware that one of the aims of the capsule collection was for non-customers to buy it to subside the clothes for SmartWorks’s customers?

Accordingly, they needed clothes the average office-working woman could access and afford.

purpledalmation · 19/01/2023 14:58

I think it's clear that by the time of the wedding day relations had deteriorated. Megan said kate had baby brain, had been unpleasant to Charlotte and kate over the dress Both had treated staff badly and it was as clear Meghan was not looked upon as a good choice.

Frankly I'd not want the company of a spoilt brat like Harry.

Serenster · 19/01/2023 15:04

Nope! Meghan does not use a John Lewis tote bag. The one in the Smartworks collection was designed to look just like the Everlane bag Meghan used, which was twice the price.

And I never said I worked for Smartworks. Commas are your friend!

OrcastralManoeuvresInTheDark · 19/01/2023 15:27

Ah interesting if was modelled on an Everlane bag. I really like Everlane, have some things by them.

Funnily enough, the most expensive white shirt they do is £18 less than the Nonoo one.

trucklebrunch · 19/01/2023 16:25

William was asked to show enthusiasm about Harry's wedding which he clearly thought was a big mistake to a woman he didn't trust. No wonder he wasn't jumping for joy....turns out his instincts were spot on.

babsanderson · 19/01/2023 16:35

They are happily married.
When your sibling gets married you do not have to like the person, just support your subling.

He did!! He was Harrys best man. He had dinner with him the previous evening.

I think "putting himself out" was rightly for his wife, his 3 week old baby and his other two children. If she wanted him then that's fair enough at 3 weeks postpartum, could her parents have helped? Of course they could but maybe she wanted her husband there, maybe he felt prioritising her and being with his children was his priority. Good for him.

He went for the meal, they aren't 8 year olds and don't really need sleepovers.

Sugarfree23 · 19/01/2023 18:15

You know people have slated how much the Royals rely on nannies, and how little the children see their parents. William & Kate appear to be trying to break that cycle and be more hands on, yet William takes a pounding for not staying over night with Harry. Where was Pa, Stepmum and various other family and friends who maybe didn't have a 3 week old and two other tiny kids to consider?
