Queen offered Meghan a choice of tiaras

Below is an extract that describes Meghan being given the tiara to wear for her wedding by the Queen. Another passage describes hoe Angela Levin would not allow Meghan to get access to the tiara before her wedding to practise it with her hairdresser.

"Next came the question of a tiara. My aunts asked if Meg would like to wear my mother’s. We were both touched. Meg then spent hours and hours with her dress designer, getting the veil to match the tiara, giving it a similar scalloped edge. Shortly before the wedding, however, Granny reached out. She offered us access to her collection of tiaras. She even invited us to Buckingham Palace to try them on. Do come over, I remember her saying.
Extraordinary morning. We walked into Granny’s private dressing room, right next to her bedroom, a space I’d never been in. Along with Granny was a jewelry expert, an eminent historian who knew the lineage of each stone in the royal collection. Also present was Granny’s dresser and confidante, Angela. Five tiaras were arrayed on a table, and Granny directed Meg to try on each one before a full-length mirror. I stood behind, watching.
One was all emeralds. One was aquamarines. Each was more dazzlingly stunning than the last. Each took my breath. I wasn’t the only one. Granny said to Meg quite tenderly: Tiaras suit you.
Meg melted. Thank you, Ma’am.
One of the five, however, stood out. Everyone agreed. It was beautiful, seemingly made for Meg. Granny said it would be placed in a safe directly and she looked forward to seeing it on Meg’s head come the Big Day. Make sure, she added, that you practice putting it on. With your hairdresser. It’s tricky and you don’t want to be doing it for the first time on the wedding day."

Spare, Harry

I just LOVE the aquamarine ring 😍

Plus this bit

Granny said it would be placed in a safe directly

Where does he think it was normally kept, then?

In a vault under Buckingham Palace is where it would usually be kept

Harry confirmed in the book that he had never had the ring. William had it since Diana’s death. More nonsense

He said William asked for it soon after Diana died and he gave it to him because he didn’t want to have it (it sounded as though he found having it difficult).

He doesn’t say that at all. He says in the book William always had it

He says:

“The papers published florid stories about the moment I realized Willy and Kate were well matched, the moment I appreciated the depth of their love and thus decided to gift Willy the ring I’d inherited from Mummy, the legendary sapphire, a tender moment between brothers, a bonding moment for all three of us, and absolute rubbish: none of it ever happened. I never gave Willy that ring because it wasn’t mine to give. He already had it. He’d asked for it after Mummy died, and I’d been more than happy to let it go.”

Omg we’ve already been over this no he didn’t. He never had the ring. William chose it to keep from her possessions

Going off topic a bit, I thought MM bought her own Cartier watch during her Suits days.

The aquamarine ring is stunning. Much better than the engagement ring. Ultimately I think the right ring went to the right bride.

Meghan reported years ago, pre-Harry that she bought herself a Cartier watch with one of her first Suits paychecks. Maybe she has 2?

I agree with those remarking about the aquamarine.

ItWasDobbinAtTheMareAndSpare · 16/01/2023 22:06

OMG? 😆 I’d say his words on this are not entirely clear. He says ‘I’d been more than happy to let it go.’ which implies he’d had it right after saying he didn’t have it. So who knows. Or in your words, O M G.

Jesus Christ. It absolutely does not say that and he’s already said I never had the ring. You keep believing it any way

There's a few details from Angela Kelly's book here, about how The Queen chose brooches from a selection offered by her dressers. I don't know how many dressers she had but obviously more than one, AK being the chief one in recent years. So I'm sure someone else could have managed the tiara request if AK was on holiday.

What makes you think Harry has lost all of his friends? I have only seen that said on mumsnet.

When Meghan met his friends she was offended by their misogynistic and generally hooray Henry type jokes and told them so. I imagine the same bunch who taunted the matron. She injected Harry with woke serum and whipped him off to America, hence no or few friends.

@JADS Well said. I didn’t realise Meghan also had a piece of Diana’s jewelry so it’s nice to know that she received something as well. All this talk of tiaras and Cartier jewelry is just a stark reminder of the unparalleled wealth compared to the masses especially those who have been hit hardest by the economic climate and are living on the breadline. I think some posters are losing sight of the fact that members of the royal family, including Harry and Meghan, are incredibly privileged people and they need to be aware of that. They have access to the best medical help so if they need therapy, counseling and whatnot, they should do so privately and finally leave their family matters behind closed doors. I’m looking forward to seeing a more streamlined royal family with a few working royals, and who knows this might include Harry and Meghan in the future. Just focusing on the philanthropic work and making it less about personal drama would be more than welcome.

I recall thinking at time (2018) that the wedding was announced with rather short notice, was a lot less time for planning it than I would expect them to need.

Where were their staff, the PAs, the wedding planner(s)? Why did they micro-manage not delegate? Heck even I had a wedding planner (my dad).

Didn’t princess Eugenie have to postpone her planned wedding because M&H announced their dates late and around the same time?

OrcastralManoeuvresInTheDark · 16/01/2023 22:51

Harry’s choice of words of “let it go” is confusing (and imo rather self-important).

But if you read it in context, it seems that William asked for it when dividing up their mother’s possessions after she died. And Harry was happy for Willy to have it, possibly his words “let it go” are because he saw it as tainted and he wanted to move on.

Why write “after Mummy died” if you don’t mean pretty soon after?

It’s very unlikely Harry meant that he got the ring straight after Diana’s death, and that at some point during the 15 or so years between Diana dying and William getting engaged, William asked Harry for the ring. Because that is essentially the story Harry is saying the press got wrong. He would have had to ask at least a year or two before getting engaged for it not to be similar enough.

I think in this situation it's a bit of this and a bit of that.

Spencer tiara was offered but for some unknown reason this became a no go. Queen steps on arranges for them to come see tiaras for Meghan to borrow.
(Poor Harry thinks they are in granny's dressing room when they are In a vault)

Meghan sees the Greville tiara says "ohh I love that one" gets told "sorry its already reserved for Eugene' Meghan makes a comment in the style of "oh that's a shame I really like it" and continues to look at other tiaras perhaps commenting one was not as nice as Greville before she settles happily on Queen Mary's bandeau tiara,.

The queen being polite comments Tiaras suits Meghan aka she was born to wear tiaras (bit like us mortals saying we can carry of a hat) Harry is thrilled granny's approves of Meghan.

Later press catches Meghan commenting to someone she really had liked Greville but Eugine has it and she got another one. This gets blown up as Meghan throwing a tantrum.

Meghan who has more than once admitted to not getting protocol then arranges to meet with her hairdresser George Northwood (I think that's how it's spelled) to come over . It doesn't occur to her she needs permission to get the tiara and that this will take time. simply thinks she can ask for it to be delivered. Discovered shortly before this is not the case talks to Harry who contacts Angela (for we know how?) Who doesn't get back to them as she is on holiday. (Do we know for long she didn't get back to them)

Harry the hero (who forgot to explain to Meghan she also had to book in tiara lending in same manner George had a schedule) " saves the day" and gets it all sorted and the comment "What Meghan wants Meghan gets" is spoken (do we know who by I've heard.Harey. Queen and Angela...)

Obviously I've made all this up
Could have happened and poor Harry tries so hard.

And then Meghan announced she was pregnant at her wedding

BasiliskStare · 16/01/2023 23:16

Meghan bought her self a Cartier watch with one of her suit pay cheques I think she has said - the gold Cartier tank watch I believe is Diana's - same design perhaps as the one Meghan bought for herself but gold .

But the aquamarine ring - oh my . Just lovely

Quite. But harry says it’s just because everyone would be there…. What I don’t get is since we know the RF is briefing stories, why eugenie doesn’t mind is not seen as being another such plant? After all what could she say, she is way down the pecking order

TrashyPanda · 16/01/2023 23:25

Harry really doesn’t like women in positions of authority, does he?

slagging of the matron with a disability and now turning on Angela Kelly, expecting her to be at his beck and call, when she was HMQs personal dresser, and highly respected by her.

she was not Harry’s skivvy.

Harry said it was not his to give.

That ring sounds a bit cursed anyway, so best to get rid.

Eyerollcentral · 16/01/2023 23:33

@TrashyPanda thats my view too. They are ok if he can fancy them - like the ‘hot’ matrons at school. But he HATES the older, unattractive buzz kill who won’t let him do whatever he wants. He clearly has a vendetta against Camilla, derides princess Anne, is downright offensive against princess Margaret. He has to respect the queen because she is the boss. The vitriol for Angela Kelly is something else though and there is no way it can be explained by his description of what happened with the tiara.

Why do people keep rehashing this, and keep leaving out that H says, it was not about her, and he was trying to impress the other boys. That she realised and laughed as well.

Her job was to look after idiotic 8yr olds, she was hardly going to be scared for life, she knew and loved her job. Just as you won't be committing suicide because some 8yr old fool called you names or made fun of your appearance.

Get a life. Sheeesh !
