Nott Cogg - 'frat house'

The father-of-two wrote: 'I was excited to welcome Meg to my home, but also embarrassed. Nott Cott was no palace. Nott Cott was palace adjacent - that was the best you could say for it.'
As he watched Meghan walk up the garden path to his home, Prince Harry says he was 'relieved' that she 'gave no indication of disillusionment'.
However, that changed when the duchess stepped inside the cottage - where the ceilings are 'dolls' house low'.
He added: 'Then she said something about a frat house.'
Prince Harry says he had never noticed how 'shabby' the furniture in his home was before - with the then Suits actress appearing particularly unimpressed with his beanbag chair which matched his brown sofa.
After Meghan moved in, Prince Harry recalls how the couple purchased some Ikea lights and ordered a second-hand settee from sofa.com, which they'd bought with his future wife's credit card.

Is this petulant and ungrateful spun for a laugh?

Apologies I think it was Beatrice and her husband who lived there. Kate and William also lived there from 2011 to 2013, so 2 years seems pretty standard. Also if a man in his 30s with such wealth can't get his shit together to buy a wardrobe and keep his home nice that's on him. W and K had it decorated and stylish so no reason why he couldn't.

StatisticallyChallenged · 11/01/2023 19:28

As far as I can tell/recall

Prior to and for first year or so after their 2011 wedding, W&K had

  1. Nott Cott
  2. Rental property in Anglesey

They were given a country house on a Royal estate as a gift from the queen (anmer) which needed renovation (big stuff, new roof and windows) - completed about 2014ish

They were given a large apartment in KP which required renovation. Think they moved in to this around 2013

H&M lived together for a much shorter time pre wedding but shortly after their wedding they had

  1. Nott Cott
  2. Rental property in the Cotswolds

They were also given a country place on a Royal Estate (Frogmore, renovations had started long before it was announced they were going to live there full time)

They were also offered/had started renovations on an equally large KP apartment, with the Gloucesters shuffled to somewhere more "appropriate". They never moved in, but the renovations mostly took place before they announced they wouldn't

I really don't see how they were ill treated. The Royals obviously link getting different properties to life stages - so you get married and you get places to live as a family. W&K had been married for years so they were ahead in terms of the life stages, but there's no evidence that H&M were being treated like the poor relations.

It's like complaining your big brother got bought a car before you did!

I suspect they bought a sofa.com branded sofa second hand from a third party, and the confusion has arisen due to some mangled editing.

With a credit card?

RedCatWhoGotTheCream · 11/01/2023 19:28

I'm just getting the impression of him being a complete baby tbh, unable to make his way in the world in any way and not really making much effort either. During the Bradby interview they played the bit where he reads about eating takeaway over the sink and still living with pa. He seemed to want to latch on to W&C continually (contradicting himself on what William is like)- he should have got off his own arse and done something for himself.

Yes, couldn't agree more. He is a spoilt, bratty manbaby who seems to never have taken responsibility for anything. Why couldn't multi-millionaire Harry buy some nice furniture and hire a decorator or even just bring in an interior designer? He clearly had low standards and no taste.

Going by the picture, I’m also not sure Meghan’s sofa „intervention“ was particularly successful (would have expected more from someone who had a lifestyle blog). I certainly managed to put together something much nicer and more intersting as a poor student on a shoestring budget using the likes of FB marketplace, flea markets, eBay and a bit of IKEA.

Bloody numbering went wonky, you get the drift

Maireas · 11/01/2023 19:29

I wish I'd known about their situation, it was about that time that I got rid of a sofa and a table and chairs. I gave them to a charity, but of course Meghan and Harry were in far greater need.

purpledalmation · 11/01/2023 19:30

Must have been a step up from her tiny rented flat in Canada?

Maybe. Local secondhand furniture shop/dealer. It may well be bullshit and be brand new, of course. I’m not on team anyone. They can all disappear up their own holes as far as I’m concerned.

purpledalmation · 11/01/2023 19:31

At least it had a dog bowl.

It's funny because if Harry had alternatively explained they had bought a second hand sofa because they would be moving into a better and bigger home soon. Thus saving pennies for a new sofa for a longer term home whilst also being environmentally friendly, lots of us would have gone yes good thinking and you're in touch with us. Instead alienating whinge fest - who does their PR?😆

Beatrice and her husband lived in an apartment at St James Palace.

William and Kate lived in Anglesey when first married although they had access to Nottingham Cottage when visiting London.

Apparently they do.

They seem to have as hard a time holding onto staff in California as they did in London. Fancy that.

Cath667 · 11/01/2023 19:38

There is absolutely no way that Meghan bought a second hand sofa from Sofa.com. No way. Just didn't happen. There is no way they bought a second hand sofa. I don't believe it.

Just as I don't believe that Meghan was prepared to make her own clothes.

The man's already proved himself to be a liar. It's horseshit.

ArseInTheDogBowl · 11/01/2023 19:39

Quite, shame she couldn't have ran up some decent bridesmaids dresses, isn't it? 😂

He’s so fucking ungrateful and whiny

Exactly.

Most people would be thrilled at such historic accommodations.

It was a step down.
Meghan when in Toronto lived in a three bedroom property.

IcedPurple · 11/01/2023 19:44

Exactly.

Most people would be thrilled at such historic accommodations.

It could have been done in a cute sort of way.

"You know, a lot of people are surprised that royal homes are a lot less grand than you might expect. Meghan was a little taken aback when she first arrived, but she quickly fell in love with the house and brought her woman's touch to my blokish bachelor pad. We loved the historic atmosphere of the house, and it was fantastic being in the heart of the city and we used to sneak out for walks in Kensington Park and nobody even recognised us!"

But no, it's all whine bitch and moan and how his brother always had it better. Such a professional victim.

StatisticallyChallenged · 11/01/2023 19:44

She was welcome to buy herself something else then, wasn't she

LadyVictoriaSponge · 11/01/2023 19:46

IcedPurple · 11/01/2023 19:14

If she'd stuck around, she probably would have.

Now that Charles is king, they'd likely be looking at a gift of either a country pile or maybe an apartment in Kensington Palace. But they flounced out.

I read that prior to their marriage Charles offered to buy them a country estate but they turned his offer down.

You do yourself no favours when you say a bog standard rented suburban home in Toronto was a 'step down' from a Christopher Wren designed building on a royal estate and in one of the most exclusive areas of London.

You just make yourself sound ridiculous.

BradfordGirl · 11/01/2023 19:46

@LadyVictoriaSponge I have never read that. Could you provide links from the time?

IcedPurple · 11/01/2023 19:47

StatisticallyChallenged · 11/01/2023 19:44

Yes, she was quite free to stay in Toronto if a free home on the grounds of Kensington Palace was not to her liking.

Pity she didn't.

HisRoyalWhineness · 11/01/2023 19:49

Pair of whingebags being ungrateful and sarky about what, ultimately, the taxpayer had provided for them.

Fuck off.

It is a step down.
The toronto house has a cinema room and a much higher spec garden and bathrooms than Nott Cottage. It is also larger and in a decent area.
Nott Cottage is designed by Wren, but is small with 1 main bedroom and 1 very small bedroom.
Yes Nottingham Cottage is on a Royal Estate.
