Inconsistencies in Spare over hearing about Queen Mother's death

Harry writes that he found out about the Queen Mother's passing away (in March 2002):

"At Eton, while studying, I took the call. I wish I could remember whose voice was on the other end. A courtiers I believe. I recall that is was just before Easter, the weather bright and warm, light slanting through my window, filled with vivid colours. "Your Royal Highness. The Queen Mother has died." "

News reports at the time reported he was skiing in Switzerland with Charles and William. The Queen Mother died on 30 March 2002. Easter Saturday. He wouldn't have been at school.

Recollections may vary, indeed! I doubt very much Harry would have taken the call if he's been with his father.

Didn't the editors do any fact checking?

They pointed at our bodies, our flaccid cocks. They went on and on about how small. I wanted to say: You don’t know the half of what’s wrong with this appendage.

I'm really confused who would right this in a book they had written about themselves.

Just a side note - lots of private schools have Saturday school (usually the boarding ones) so he could feasibly have been at school.

I agree with the rest of you! "Inconsistencies" is an interesting word to use...."Wilful lies" might be better.....

Boarding schools virtually always organise Easter holidays so that they include Easter weekend, therefore they will not be open on Easter Saturday.

Wtf? Is this really in the book? He’s obsessed with his cock.

Harry on Margaret:

In his memoir Spare, Harry wrote that she was “almost a total stranger” to him - adding: “I was conversant with the general contours of her sad life. Great loves thwarted by the Palace. Exuberant streaks of self-destruction splashed across the tabloids. One hasty marriage, which looked doomed at the outset and ended up being even worse than expected.

He went on: “Growing up, I felt nothing for her, except a bit of pity and a lot of jumpiness. She could kill a houseplant with one scowl. Mostly, whenever she was around, I kept my distance.”

Given that, at the time this was written, his grandmother was alive, this was a pretty hurtful thing to write about the sister she loved.

As usual the Sussexes are torn apart for every tiny detail.

There are no 2002 photos of them at Klosters, only a photo of Charles and it’s not impossible the was inaccurately reported.

It would have been a short weekend break to Klosters & not much to cut short unless Harry missed school. He was in his final year so this seems unlikely.

thing this story is incorrect

I loved his book about Agassi . Hard to believe it’s the same author.

I'm guessing Agassi was a hell of a lot easier to work with, not least because the writer didn't have to fight his way through impenetrable forests of self-pity.

Fladdermus · 10/01/2023 17:36

Easter break at public school is usually 4 weeks. Not the 2 weeks state schools get.

No idea why he's dissing a pen, you never have one when you need it.

He must have been scribbling furiously and constantly in his BIG BOOK OF MEANY POO HEADS.

This has given me the hysterical giggles on the train.

And no, schools are not/not open Easter weekend. Even those in exam years go home for the holidays, which would last 3-4 weeks

Aww, bless! Still trying despite the evidence...

Crabo · 10/01/2023 17:42

Looking at what I’ve read on the Internet as I will not lower myself to buy this rubbish, it appears that this is typical of a certain type of personality disorder who sees everyone else in the wrong and them in the right about everything. This sort of person that has an elephantine memory for slights - real or imagined - but is completely insensitive to anyone else’s emotional needs and will say absolutely anything, no matter how hurtful. You do not want to have any form of conversation with such a person because you know it will be repeated ad nauseam and not necessarily accurately

HIS story is incorrect. There was a press call on 29 March 2002 - pictures widely available online if you could be bothered to google. QM died 30 March 2002.

BBC website AT THE TIME reported that Charles was "devastated" and would be "returning early from a skiing holiday in Switzerland with his sons Princes William and Harry."

Aww, this brings back memories of when I used to call up my lil boyfriend at Eton on the landline at Cotton Hall House, if I remember the name correctly 😊. You could get put through almost directly with few questions being asked along the way and the whole dorm would get excited to hear a girl's voice down the line . Those were fun times pre-Snapchat and TikTok.

What goes around comes around. Imagine criticising your great auntie in your autobiography because she once gave you a fish biro for Christmas when you were little.
