Inconsistencies in Spare over hearing about Queen Mother's death

Harry writes that he found out about the Queen Mother's passing away (in March 2002):

"At Eton, while studying, I took the call. I wish I could remember whose voice was on the other end. A courtiers I believe. I recall that is was just before Easter, the weather bright and warm, light slanting through my window, filled with vivid colours. "Your Royal Highness. The Queen Mother has died." "

News reports at the time reported he was skiing in Switzerland with Charles and William. The Queen Mother died on 30 March 2002. Easter Saturday. He wouldn't have been at school.

Recollections may vary, indeed! I doubt very much Harry would have taken the call if he's been with his father.

Didn't the editors do any fact checking?

I think the queen was once given that singing fish thing too.

Well that was on the Crown so it MUST be true.

But you can see how it plays out to an audience who don't know that their tradition is to buy silly/small gifts in recognition that they're all loaded and don't need more stuff. Poor Harold, snubbed and hard done by, his own family buy him a biro for Christmas. Boo hoo, woe is me.

DuchessOfPort · 10/01/2023 16:56

and a furry loo seat I think? Diana’s first Christmas she was mortified as Charles didn’t tell her so she got them nice presents like cashmere jumpers. The Queen got a shower cap with “ain’t life a bitch?” On it.

Kate once gave Harry a “grow your own girlfriend” kit…

But isn't giving rubbish/token gifts a royal family thing?

Yes, but I'm coming to the view harry sees everything as a personal slight. It must be exhausting for those around him.

A bit of a pattern of not briefing new wives on s beginning to emerge here.

Okay, that rings a bell now about the shit presents. And makes a lot of sense when you are that wealthy. So is he writing it to play up the poor little rich boy image? That the RF were cruel to him? Why do this when it can be easily countered? Probably thrown in for non-UK audiences who don't know the traditions (or numpties like me).

A PP alluded to Harry's drug taking. I honestly think he has taken too much waccy baccy.

More likely then-PC just thought she knew. Princess Diana’s grandmother had been the QM’s lady-in-waiting.

Honestly that’s not a ridiculous thing to say.

When he was quite old my grandfather used to get me the most random crap gifts in all seriousness, not as part of a family joke. That anecdote has made me feel quite sentimental as I miss him. I’d have killed for a biro rather than the random poster of a Monet painting in a wonky aluminium frame that is hanging in my office. I don’t even particularly like Monet, or posters of paintings in general. At least a biro is useful and wouldn’t make the room look odd. (And no, I will not throw away the gift I hide in the least-used room of the house because I’m a sentimental, middle-aged magpie. It has been carted about through 4 house moves up and down the country so it stays forever.)

GloomyDarkness · 10/01/2023 17:05

I always thought this was Meghan issue - she was used to an life having fun but not too closely looked at anecdotes and stories selling herself or something- and that doesn't work with RF presence - people can and do check and there enough media information of them to make that fairly straight forward.

yes apples haven't fallen that far have they.

Oh that has reminded me. One of my stocking presents years ago was a set of biros in a black and white Bridget Riley print. They were lovely. No idea why he's dissing a pen, you never have one when you need it.

What a shit he is. Imagine Sarah Chatto or David Linley reading that.

They must be all too aware of what he’s like. I imagine the family WhatsApp group is buzzing with “He said what?” With lots of emojis.

If you don't laugh you would cry. As Mike Tindall allegedly said, 'Harry is a bellend'.

I've read that as well.

I suppose it depends how old he was?

Even if he was young though I'm sure as a pp put he would have had more than enough to make up for it.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 10/01/2023 17:11

@Yesthatismychildsigh , even boarders do usually go home for the holidays. Or go skiing in Switzerland, as the case may be.,

He must have been scribbling furiously and constantly in his BIG BOOK OF MEANY POO HEADS.

BIG BOOK OF MEANY POO HEADS.

I need one of these to write in! I quite like the idea of a book of pretty gripes to look back on when I’m older - like most people (I think) I sometimes get irrationally wound up by nonsense that won’t matter in a couple of years time. I’d never get mine published though.

I think it was Harry who gave his grandmother the singing fish, they were all the rage for a while a few years back, they reacted to motion as you walked by. Bill Bass as Google reminds me!

Ridemeginger · 10/01/2023 17:18

I do think this is a global version of the Burn Book from Mean Girls, when it's photocopied by the main mean girl and strewn all over the school to make her look like the innocent party.

Harry has been clear though, it’s his truth and it can be different to the actual facts.
