Anyone here got their coat on yet, ready to head out? And will you be staying up all night to read it?

It would be highly amusing if bookshops up and down the country were all open at midnight and rammed with customers - all buying old Barbara Cartland romances, Austen, Dickens, Orwell, dictionaries, Enid Blyton, Harry Potter etc. etc. - and not a single copy of 'THE' book was sold!

I have seen enough in press to feel no point buying to book I am sure mumsnet will give more detail

Same here. I'm not going to lie and claim that I have no interest whatsoever in learning of the alleged shady dealings of the royal family; but I've reached the conclusion now that the only bits of the book that won't be revealed and discussed on MN and in the news are the boring mundane bits that nobody would care about anyway.

LagunaBeachtoTheHills · 10/01/2023 02:30

I’ve just started reading it...on kindle though. 😅

Bookshops won't open at midnight on the off chance; those that do will know customers are coming and will make an event of it. Whatever you think of Harry, it's a bit silly to pretend the book isn't a big deal - there is an immense amount of interest (from all sides!) and I think some posters need to prepare themselves for the fact it is going to be a massive bestseller. I look forward to reading all the creative explanations on here for the sales figures as people desperately try to find ways to discredit them.

The Taliban memes are absolutely vile, not funny and in incredibly bad taste particularly when you remember Salman Rushdie was attacked on stage at a book event recently. There's nothing to laugh at or gloat about there.

I'm so glad you said what I was thinking. I'm actually agog at many posts.
What a pallaver! Mocking isn't clever.

Started reading the book over the last 3 hours… bit boring though to be fair considering all the explosive bomb shells were already out in the main domain….

60smusic · 10/01/2023 08:36

It's nearly 30 euro here in Ireland. But then we're extremely expensive for most things. I would have thought there would be some sort of special offer here to try increase sales. People are interested but for that amount I think most will pass and just read about it online.

I wonder if mumsnet will be quiet today? I'm picturing everyone frantically reading their new book.

kirinm · 10/01/2023 09:37

There's an article in the Guardian predicting it'll be this year's best seller. That would upset you all, wouldn't it?

DerangedViper · 10/01/2023 09:39

I haven't seen any pix of queues (unlike for Harry Potter)

Any accounts from any bookshop owners/managers about how midnight sales went?

Loving the memes, please share them also on the meme thread.

The BBC have just a piece to camera from one of the bookshops. The only other people in the shop are other news crews with cameras - one group interviewing the person on the counter whilst the BBC broadcast in front of them.

Brefugee · 10/01/2023 09:45

did anyone dress up as Harry Potter and get to the front and say something like "bloody hell, wrong Harry!" and walk away?

WhenDovesFly · 10/01/2023 09:48

No interest from me. What's the point in paying top dollar anyway? Most of the good bits are being put in the press, and in a few weeks it'll be in the bargain bin anyway.

RedAndBlueStripedGolfingUmbrella · 10/01/2023 09:50

Cherry picked out and with their own spin and negative bias put on it.
I'd rather read it for myself and not the bits they pick out for me with their opinion piece on what to think attached to it.

Fifiesta · 10/01/2023 09:50

As with others - not for this Harry!
Many years ago yes, with my daughter for Master Potters adventures.
On that note a more appealing title might be ‘ Harry Sussex and the everlasting cloak of invisibility’ failing that ‘Harry the Mandrake’ complete with free ear defenders…

WandaWonder · 10/01/2023 09:51

Did you say book or charity shops?

kirinm · 10/01/2023 09:53

Funny to see so many people confirm their preference to rely on the tabloids for their "news".

fatfacemumma · 10/01/2023 09:54

Maybe for refunds or cancellations.Blush

purpledalmation · 10/01/2023 09:54

Just order it from amazon. Bonkers. It's not Harry Potter

Exactly, it's making their Netflix programme's point perfectly for them! 😁

rumship · 10/01/2023 09:59

I'll wait until I get a gifted from a secret santa from someone who hates me or thinks I need a doorstop 😂

Didn't the last Harry Potter book come out years ago though?!.
People order online more now to get it on release date, you'd have to be a special kind of bonkers to queue up at midnight for a book nowadays 😁
