Anyone here got their coat on yet, ready to head out? And will you be staying up all night to read it?

It's the Taliban, hoping PH will be there in person

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 09/01/2023 23:04

I'm sure it will sell well but why would you queue up in the middle of the night when you could get it two days earlier from Amazon?

Yes, I can very much see it being extremely popular - but it seems to me a bit like when a new iPhone is released and people queue overnight for that, as if Apple are going to suddenly stop making them and refuse to sell any to the millions and millions of eager buyers who didn't queue!

Especially as the juiciest bits have already been leaked - I haven't particularly looked, but for all I know, they may even have been mentioned in passing on MN Grin

confusedcentral5 · 09/01/2023 23:06

I'm not surprised. Look at all the stories & the threads are here!

miri1985 · 09/01/2023 23:09

According to this its not very many that are opening for it, so chances are they'll do well. I would expect they would have done slightly better with the planned interviews but without the Spanish leaks, we know all the juicy stuff by now

www.thebookseller.com/news/small-number-of-w-h-smith-travel-stores-to-open-at-midnight-for-launch-of-prince-harrys-memoir

"A “small number” of W H Smith’s Travel stores will be opening at midnight tonight for the launch of Prince Harry’s eagerly awaited memoir Spare (Transworld).

The retailer confirmed to The Bookseller that stores in Heathrow Airport, Gatwick Airport, London Victoria rail station and London Euston rail station will be extending their opening hours for the launch.
There will be no midnight openings at Waterstones, but the Piccadilly branch will open slightly earlier at 8 a.m."

WhereIsMyRollingPin · 09/01/2023 23:15

I asked our local indie bookshop if they were opening at midnight but apparently they are not. They only had 2 pre-orders so gauged that there wasn't a lot of interest locally.

RedAndBlueStripedGolfingUmbrella · 09/01/2023 23:18

I've got mine pre-ordered so should be arriving tomorrow 🙂
I'm pretty neutral, not a fan either way but like to hear people's own stories, told by them, not others.
Looking forward to reading his.

Ooh It's like all the additional openings for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, except without the crowds or the queues or the excitement.
So not really the same then. I'm disappointed for them. Having stuck a bomb under your life and forced your entire extended family to go NC , I'm guessing that they need a bit more positivity around the launch to make the money that they've chosen over family.

Iliveditwizbit · 09/01/2023 23:22

I’d quite like a midnight bookshop.
Do I have to buy that book?

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 09/01/2023 23:23

AuroraCake · 09/01/2023 22:44

I doubt anyone will buy it. I actually don’t think people are that interested. It will sell but probably not as well as they thought.

I gave in and ordered it online 🙈. I would not queue up overnight for it though.

Whiskeypowers · 09/01/2023 23:23

I’m sat on one of those folding fabric chairs as I type: freezing my arse off outside my local Waterstones in feverish anticipation.

OnTheRunWithMannyMontana · 09/01/2023 23:25

My 13yo has let the side down and ordered it on Amazon.

I'm disappointed. But not too disappointed to read it after her just for the shits and giggles.

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 09/01/2023 23:26

Many years ago I did the midnight queue at WH Smith for a Harry Potter book then stayed up all night to read it. I did the same for the final Jean M Auel book in the Clan of the Cavebear series.

Won't be queuing for this Harry book though!

I hate that I can't be entirely sure that you're joking.

I'm up for midnight book shopping though. Can I come in my pyjamas and do I have to put a bra on?

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 09/01/2023 23:27

Don't forget to leave some marmalade sandwiches outside when you leave.

DonutsAndCream · 09/01/2023 23:31

I queued at midnight for the last Harry Potter!
I suspect this one won't have quite the same atmosphere.

Ineedwinenow · 09/01/2023 23:31

As another PP said, I’ve already taken my bra off so obviously can’t go and queue! Shame really as I was really excited about going! Oh well!!! he’s got to write another couple though so maybe next time…

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 09/01/2023 23:32

Ooh It's like all the additional openings for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

Harry Blurter and the Pesky Palace.

DonutsAndCream · 09/01/2023 23:32

Also, what is the point? In the HP era, ebooks weren't as common.
Now you can order it on your smart phone/tablet and have it seconds without leaving your bed. Why go out?

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 09/01/2023 23:34

Will the next book be called 'Strike'? Then will everybody be bored by the time the third one comes out, leaving it looking like a bit of a turkey?

AuroraCake · 09/01/2023 23:34

So all that are opening are book stores at airports where people sleep overnight anyway. Okay.

Draconis · 09/01/2023 23:37

I was thinking that exact thought.
Don't want to buy that book but could buy a decent fantasy.

hotpotlover · 09/01/2023 23:37

I preordered mine on Audible. Really looking forward to it now.

Ah the Taliban, always front of the line for an explosive situation or a truth bomb or too.
They are consistent, if nothing else. "

LOL :-D

@WhereIsMyRollingPin

Thank you for that. You delivered it so beautifully deadpan it gave me the best laugh of the week!
