Princess Kate? Princess Anne? Princess Diana?

Why is it viewed by so many as disrespectful to refer to Kate as Princess Kate, and yet talking about Princess Anne or Princess Diana is seen as normal and acceptable?

I’m unsure why you mention Princess Anne when she actually is a princess by birthright with her full title being Her Royal Highness Princess Anne, The Princess Royal. Catherine & Diana were not born princesses and therefore don’t have the the title Princess and their forenames. On marriage Lady Diana became Her Royal Highness The Princess of Wales never Princess Diana but the press ran with it (like they are doing with Catherine now) and so the public followed suit. Upon divorce she became Diana, Princess of Wales with no entitlement to HRH, the same way Sarah Ferguson went from Her Royal Highness The Duchess of York to Sarah, Duchess of York.
Catherine is now Her Royal Highness The Princess of Wales - previously The Duchess of Cambridge or, as explained, Princess William of Cambridge. Long story short, if you’re not born in to the family you’re not a prince or a princess. Though oddly enough when the time comes for Prince William to become King she will become Queen Catherine the same way Camilla is now Queen Camilla.

Catherine was not Princess William of Cambridge. She was Princess William in addition to being Duchess of Cambridge but not of Cambridge.
the "of" designation comes from the title of the particular prince's father, as in Princess Michael of Kent. Without the Cambridge title, while Charles was Prince of Wales, Catherine would have been called Princess William of Wales.

I meant Wales, sorry! Long day and ended up being a long post 😆

I think you're trying to find problems where there aren't any OP!

Irks me too when neither she or William refer to her as Kate. William always calls her Catherine and whenever she introduces herself or signs her name on Instagram posts, as an example, she will put Catherine. It’s so strange how random people and the press just run away with names for people or get stuck in time calling her Kate Middleton when she’s not been a Middleton by name since 2011.

Strange thing to get irked about when William clearly calls her Kate in their engagement interview. But apparently Catherine sounds more regal and suitable for a royal or some such bollocks so she's always referred to by that name now.

As for the press, there's one reason - SEO. People are far more likely to google Kate Middleton than Catherine of Wales. It's not a particularly new thing either - Diana was Lady Di to the day she died and the Duchess of York is still known as Fergie.

Loads of people (me included!) are known by nicknames or informal shortenings of their names among family and friends, but use their full name at work. I think it would be a little odd if people I only knew in a work context said “Well, since your husband calls you X, I’m going to do so too regardless of your own preference”

Despite the fact she’s tried to get ‘Catherine’ adopted by the press and proles, she’s very much stuck with Kate.

Her family and William call her Kate in private and Harry calls her Kate throughout ’Spare’. My friend has hosted them at a sporting event several times and William always calls her Kate when they’re away from the press.

I think it’s engrained and will always be so. If Pippa had married into the RF and then tried to be known as Philippa, she’d have the same issue.

I find it quite obsequious that some posters on here call her Catherine, tbh.

For me anyway, it's because I can't use the titles with a straight face. I could just never call her the Duchess of Cambridge or Princess of Wales in all seriousness, that just sounds ridiculous. Kate is too common a name to work on its own (Diana and Meghan less in need of a surname as an identifier).

I guess if she'd always been Catherine I'd be calling her Catherine Middleton, but she was Kate for years including their engagement interview and I gather throughout Harry's book. I remember it being discussed at the time of the wedding/engagement that she'd be using Catherine formally. Kate just stuck.

No other reason than princess kate doesn't sound very regal.

I was responding to someone who said William never calls her Kate. Clearly he does.

And presumably you aren't internationally famous and the media don't write stories about you that they want to optimise for search engines!
