The royal family

It's shocking how much harder the older Royals are working

The Princess of Wales barely outworked Queen Elizabeth who died in early September after cancelling a series of engagements.

Charles and Anne look to be carrying the monarchy at present. The Earl and Countess of Wessex are grafting hard as well.

What do William and Kate spend their days doing? Surely as young energetic members of the RF, they should be pulling their weight.

I see more monarchists than republicans on Mumsnet.

Far more! And they luffs the RF so much.

Anyone could work at Asda checkout but not everyone could discuss current affairs with PM or meet head of states from other countries. I also don't know any 94 year olds who still work at a supermarket checkout.

Who was talking about 94 year olds? You mentioned people who are retired. You have no idea what they talk about with other heads of states. Maybe you overestimate them!

BradfordGirl · 02/01/2023 20:15

It is not hard to talk to Heads of State about current events if you are briefed. Remember they can't offer opinions on anything controversial, so it will be broad brush strokes. Sorry to see about the dreadful wildfires you had, so much wildlife lost. Congratulations on the win for your national football team, they played really well. They won't be talking to the Chinese President about the looming war with Taiwan, far too controversial and delicate.

One doesn't need to be supportive of monarchy to recognise it's nasty and dehumanising to refer people as parasites.

It's also lazy and cliched to shout the royal family should house homeless in their many properties. Where do you draw a line? Anyone with any wealth should house homeless? Or just the RF as your hatred is focused on the? Housing homeless in properties of historical value isn't really a solution.

I don't hate them because I don't know them.I said their selfishness makes me sick. If you think it's justified that a bunch of aristocrats have enormous wealth - which was stolen initially - and share nothing with people who literally have nothing, then you are seriously misguided at best or equally selfish at worst. What would actually be wrong with 'ordinary' wealthy people sharing their money to help people? If we taxed the rich properly in this country we wouldn't have an NHS in its knees. But no, let's carry on in this mean and despicable way, supporting one of the wealthiest families in the world who quite frankly, couldn't give a damn.

UglyModernWindows · 02/01/2023 20:20

@LadyKenya My point was that the Queen was still working at 94. Regular folk would have already been retired approx three decades at that age.

Oh my goodness! Is everyone brainwashed? She wasn't working. She was being driven around and sat down somewhere for a few minutes, then she was driven away. Or she was in one of her many abodes counting her millions.

The definition of a parasite is an organism that freeloads on another organism. That's the RF for you.

CathyorClaire · 02/01/2023 20:49

I reckon there's a lot who could give it a shot with endless lackeys researchers to do the grunt work.

Yup I agree. Evidently Princess Margaret liked to delve into politics. She wrote to the PM of the day to complain about the miner's strike, and how dare they ask for more money. The creature who'd never done a day's work in her life, was pissed from lunch time till bedtime, whinging about blokes who worked underground for 10 hours a day. What a nasty piece of work she was.
.

UglyModernWindows · 02/01/2023 21:14

@CriticalAlert Oh my goodness, is everyone so bloody ridiculous! 🙄

People can dismiss The Queen's legacy and the work the royals do. Great if you think you'd be fine at holding a conversation with various head of states, prime ministers and dignitaries. Considering most of MN is too anxious to answer the door or say no thank you to a chugger, I don't know how they'd manage a weekly meeting with the prime minister.
I'm not saying it's rocket science either but being Royal requires a different set of skills than working at a checkout and it's not something that everyone could do.

Also, RF are human beings, not just an organism. I admit it touches a raw nerve with me though. I've been called a useless parasite on this forum before. Only because I have been a stay at home parent.

This is hilarious. Of course there are thousands of people the length and breadth of the UK who could do this.

And all for a salary and a couple of official residences.

LadyKenya · 02/01/2023 21:26

The pedestal that some people put the Royal family on is astonishing.

UglyModernWindows · 02/01/2023 21:35

Of course there is "thousands" who could it. Never said there wasn't. But there are far more who simply couldn't. Also the fact is that many people still want to meet royals and they feel they actually get something out of it.

This is a perk of the job. You get to meet them but do not have to engage in any serious foreign policy matters because that’s really not your job.

Now, I can see foreign HOS meeting the Queen as she presided over UK when it was still very powerful and influential.

Now I’m sure it’s just a courtesy call to meet KC/PW as there’s no real legacy there and they don’t have much gravitas.

They’re just some guys, not like The Queen.

Goldpaw · 02/01/2023 21:55

This is certainly true enough.

Oh dear. You obviously think that the RF are a different breed from us plebs. You are so wrong

Goldpaw · 02/01/2023 22:06

being Royal requires a different set of skills

The skill of convincing people that there's something special about them.

Way too much sense being made here. Super post.

'A different set of skills'

If the job required skills it would need a recruitment process other than 'you've been born. Here you go.'

Ivyonafence · 02/01/2023 22:24

BradfordGirl · 02/01/2023 16:00

I wonder of William's test drive of an Aston Martin will count as an engagement?

It does.

My god, what insanity the whole concept is.

Imagine walking into a republic country in 2022 and trying to convince them to have a royal family. Explaining that a wealthy family (stolen wealth BTW but ignore that) would be considered inherently superior to everyone, receive tax payers money and adoration for cutting ribbons, sitting in the best seats and generally swanning about. No skills, talent or education required. They lecture people about mental health, inclusion and the environment while bullying their own siblings and flying around in private jets. No consequences for being lazy, ignorant, racist or ridiculous. If they gallivant with pedophiles the tax payers will get to fund their bail out while the rest of the world looks on in disgust and confusion.

Any takers?

Roussette · 03/01/2023 08:14

@Ivyonafence

Exactly!

As for needing something special to meet and greet foreign dignatories... absolutely not!
I could do it... I know how to research very carefully, and I wouldn't even need to do that, as someone would do that for me. All I have to do is steer away from politics of any sort and make the right noises. It's hardly difficult.

The RF are just other human beings. In fact there are so closeted and spoonfed information, I think a member of the general public in the right role could do it far better than they could. The only difference is... they have this aura that has been drummed in to everyone by the media.

It's ridiculous the coverage of them, the other day I turned on BBC breakfast news and it was just wall to wall Royal stuff. Why do we have to be pushed into this, into watching them all the time, the coverage is getting more and more too, because they are on sticky ground at the moment.

Roussette · 03/01/2023 08:15

*they are so closeted

AnnunciataZ · 03/01/2023 08:49

In a way, isn't a hereditary monarchy cruel even to the royal family? Your destiny decided for you at birth and no divergence from that. Perhaps William would've been an air rescue pilot full-time if he had that option. What if George decided that he wanted to be a doctor?

And if you're not the oldest you're designated as "the spare", regarded as second-best your whole life and expected to support your older sibling regardless. And sometimes you might realise that maybe you'd be better at the job than them but tough!

Roussette · 03/01/2023 09:08

@AnnunciataZ

I so agree. I have said before that I feel so so sorry for the three little ones growing up in this environment. Heaven help them if one of them was gay or suffered with an affliction of any sort. Because the RF used to stick them away in a home and pretend they were dead.

This says all we need to know about anyone who doesn't fit in.
