I thought it was perfect. Even the non royalists in this house today thought it was a touching and heartfelt speech.

It was right and fitting that he made it mostly about his mam and only a wee bit about going forward.

Everyone who has lost a loved one will know how hard it is to do the first Christmas after a loss. And to acknowledge it on public must be sore.

Life is about the people you have in it and the people who have shaped you and the people you love and continue to love.

It is a new ‘the same’. And like his mam, he got it spot on.

It’s a testament to the Queen that it feels so alien to have anyone else do it. It’s also a testament to the Queen that the monarchy is still in action now she’s gone.

I wish him all of the best with it. He must know the shoes he has to fill are unfillable and that is not an easy thing.

BrownJenkins · 25/12/2022 15:50

I too thought he gave a wonderful speech.
The King comes across as a genuine, caring person. I like him.

Supernormative · 25/12/2022 15:51

I thought it was lovely.

Ruffpuff · 25/12/2022 15:55

I missed the Queen’s speech this year, but it’s all I’ve ever known. I never used to be that bothered by it until I watched the speech she did during Christmas 2020, which I found so comforting I vowed to watch it every year. I only had one more year of her then.

However, the King did a good job and it was a thoughtful and well delivered speech.

AceofPentacles · 25/12/2022 15:55

We thought it was great, especially the inference that UK politics is driving more people into poverty. Although we did miss spotting who was in the desk photos this year (he avoided that well).

adriftabroad · 25/12/2022 16:12

I also thought it was great. Quite moving.

purpledalmation · 25/12/2022 16:21

Though it was very nice. Quite informal.

SLS500 · 25/12/2022 16:39

He talks about his appreciation for people working in public services and charities supporting our communities. All lovely words, but perhaps what would be more helpful is if he paid tax on his inheritance and donated it instead.
My royalist days are long gone

bellac11 · 25/12/2022 16:41

I didnt know if I was reading too much into it in terms of the inference about poverty and society, so Im glad Im not the only one who felt this

Yes he could pay more tax, I dont think it would have as much impact though, it would be going through the same system that is causing the poverty, thats a government choice, not an establishment choice as such

Not a royalist, but Charles's speech was OK, I thought. I predict he will be more innovative in future years, when enough time has passed for him to move on from the format made traditional by QEII.

Hmmm, I think I do too. And I’d describe myself as a republican, but if we’re going to have a monarch I don’t think he’s a bad one. I could be wrong but I felt the concentration on the emergency services was a bit of a ‘fuck you’ to the government. Yes, I know he’s King and indescribably rich, but he can’t help that, doesn’t mean he doesn’t have a social conscience I suppose. I also liked the very clear message that, despite being Defender of the Faith, all faiths/no faith are equal in terms of their importance to humanity. Not a bad start.

I could also be wrong on this, but I get the feeling he’s going to be far more forward thinking and inclusive than his son will be……
King Charles III might actually be a decent King.

Hbh17 · 25/12/2022 16:46

I was a big fan of The Queen, and she is very much missed, but it's undeniably true that King Charles is a more confident and relaxed speaker & broadcaster than his mother. He brings more of his own personality into his speech, I think.

4onway · 25/12/2022 17:07

I’m not a royalist but I enjoyed the speech. Although it wasn’t political as such I thought it was thoughtful in the present climate to name public service workers and thank them…it did feel like a bit of a statement to the government. I also like that he spoke about the universal power of light over dark and how those of all religions and none can identify with it. It felt weird it not being the queen—I think everyone appreciated the depth of her duty and service with her passing. I enjoyed Charles actual speech more than the queens —I think he is more of a natural orator and a bit warmer than the queen

BCBird · 25/12/2022 17:09

I thought it was a little underwhelming.

SenecaFallsRedux · 25/12/2022 17:13

I thought it was excellent. My favorite part:

"So whatever faith you have, or whether you have none, it is in this life-giving light and with the true humility that lies in our service to others, that I believe we can find hope for the future."

thistimelastweek · 25/12/2022 17:20

I think he speaks really well.

Much better than the Queen.

MarshaBradyo · 25/12/2022 17:23

I really liked it. He speaks well and the messaging was comforting

peridito · 25/12/2022 17:29

what was that strange sort of groove in his right cheek ?

Notonthestairs · 25/12/2022 17:30

I thought it was very well done. The themes were lovely - faith in humanity and celebrating public service.

picklemewalnuts · 25/12/2022 17:33

I thought it excellent. Well judged. Suitable for those of all religion and none, of wealth and none.

diddl · 25/12/2022 17:35

I liked the informality of it.

The Queen's suited her & I think that this suited him.

StopGo · 25/12/2022 17:36

He got kicked by a polo pony in 1980. He had six stitches in a deep cut.
