Daily Mail thinks it has evidence. Let's discuss.

Well....having seen the ridiculous curtsey Kate did to both Charles and Camilla at the Christmas carol burgundy wearing service, I am wondering what the point is.
Honestly, if you have to do this to your in-laws 😮😮😮 isn't it time ot was dropped between close family??

MarshaMelrose · 22/12/2022 22:05

The problem is Kate makes a curtsey look so elegant and effortless. But it's hard. No wonder Meghan said she was rubbish at it. If she'd stayed, she'd have got better over time, I'm sure.

Roussette · 22/12/2022 22:15

But why does she do it? I'm sure I read somewhere that the royal family now do not expect general public to curtsey, (maybe I have that wrong).
If it's the case why the heck do close family have to do it. It honestly looked pathetic

MarshaMelrose · 22/12/2022 22:21

No, I don't think they expect it at all. I saw William and Catherine out this week and two ladies met them and neither bowed or curtseyed, they just shook hands. The couple didn't look like they'd even noticed.

Some things are just tradition and they're just acknowledging their relation with the kiss and the institution with a bow. I quite like it. Maybe Kate does it because she looks so good doing it in those high heels.

SenecaFallsRedux · 22/12/2022 22:29

It's true that the RF have said that it is entirely optional with the general public. But obviously the Royal Family continues to do it, as do other royal families.

The main thing that I don't like about it is that it is so sexist. Men are only expected to do a mere nod of the head, while the women lower themselves almost to the floor.

At least Camilla doesn't have to do it any more. For years she has been curtseying to women have her age.

Coxspurplepippin · 22/12/2022 22:48

Until all the current bollocks, I bet people rarely even noticed Kate curtseying. Perhaps the close members of the RF just do it out of love and respect. There are all sorts of customs and traditions around the world, prostration, kissing bits of jewellery, lots of cultures practice bowing, saluting flags etc. If it's not forced I think it should be entirely up to the people taking part.

Exactly, are the Obama’s pathetic as well?

I think Michelle and Barack Obama are two of the most impressive people on the planet. Intelligence, erudition with a large dollop of understanding, courtesy and empathy. Very much the real deal.

antelopevalley · 23/12/2022 00:25

And the Obamas met the Royals in a room with a painting of a slave boy.

I agree with your assessment of Michelle and Barack Obama, however, there was some criticism in the US for them bowing to the Emperor and Empress of Japan. I think generally, protocol dictates that heads of state do not bow to each other, although evidently other American presidents have done it in the past.

But President Obama has what I think would be described as very courtly manners, and also grew up with much more diverse cultural influences but than the average American.

Liorae · 21/12/2022 12:48

Well, if the Daily Mail says it then it must be true. I'm sure Piers Morgan told them so.

Yeah, totally!
God when the women of MN are lapping up the daily Mail this place really has gone to the dogs!

LizzieSiddal · 23/12/2022 01:22

The clothes would have been planned months ago, way before the Netflix doc.

Do people seriously think these women planned their coordinated clothing and it was all bought, altered so they fitted perfectly and worn a week after a Tv show aired??

Burgundy is a coming out of mourning colour

Prescottdanni123 · 23/12/2022 08:11

@SenecaFallsRedux

Either way, she knew that a curtsey is a bob, not whatever that unrecognisable dramatic thing she did for the queen was.

Prescottdanni123 · 23/12/2022 08:16

@pelargoniums

I don't think I've curtseyed to anyone ever so she had more experience than me, and I still know how they are done. After all the proven lies she has told already, and with the footage from Suits, I'm more inclined to believe that she new how to curtsey to the queen just fine.

I think it's very plausible that she was totally thrown by the idea of curtseying to her boyfriend's granny. That was her explanation. That she wasn't meeting the Queen as The Queen but as her boyfriend's granny and thought it would be therefore informal and when told it wasn't had no idea what to do and over compensated.

I'd imagine I'd be very similar and would also be totally confused by the situation. She was assuming, as I would, that regardless of official status these people try to be a little bit normal when meeting their family's friends. Turns out they are just weird.

And Michelle Obama told Meghan to get over it and move on.

Of course she did . Even Harry had the grace to look awkward and embarrassed.

Jacopo · 23/12/2022 09:42

It’s very simple, the bow/curtsey is a mark of respect for the role, not for the person. It’s fine if members of the public don’t want to bow or curtsey, and clearly the anti-monarchists of MN don’t have to do so and that’s their choice, fine. However, while we still have a Royal Family, the last place the curtseying and bowing will die out will be within the Family itself - isn’t that obvious? They are demonstrating that they have respect for the role and acknowledging their lower place in the hierarchy.
I do think that at some point the King, or the next King if we have one, will abolish the practice within the Family as well.

Jacopo · 23/12/2022 09:54

The Burgundy parade isn’t the first time that colours have been coordinated. Google Prince Louis’ christening, where everyone wore cream or pale blue and all the men (including Harry) wore marching blue ties. Meghan wore brown, but who knows why? Nobody.

Jacopo · 23/12/2022 09:55

Matching not marching
