If they used Mandela Foundation money for their own greed and narcissistic gaslighting then I'm appalled, absolutely appalled

Ohnonevermind · 30/12/2022 20:15

@custardbear

i don’t think it was greed, they’ve just been unable to create something similar themselves.

CathyorClaire · 30/12/2022 20:19

I dunno.

One of the participants died a couple of years ago. One was filmed three years ago with a book published shortly after and thought that was it. Haven't seen any comments from the others but it strikes me the thing's been unloved on the shelf for a few years now.

I can see NF creaming off profit and glory if it does go that way but I can't see any kind of payday if it doesn't and with the best will in the world it's only going to appeal to a fairly niche audience.

I'm still calling turkey.

Netflix does not buy rights. They lease them.

help.netflix.com/en/node/4976

You are spreading misinformation when you say the H & M bought the rights. You simply do not know that is true.

No one knows how and when H & M ended up being part of this program. This is what we know:

NMF created the project starting with the individual interviews
NMF published small books based on each interview with the intention of making them into a documentary sometime in 2022.
Netflix, at some point, licensed the rights to the documentary.
Netflix & NMF announced that Archewell was brought in as executive producers and will do the narration of the documentary.
Documentary will be released on Netflix Dec 31st

These are the only proven facts for right now. Anything else is speculation and gossip.

Ohnonevermind · 30/12/2022 20:24

NF are capitalising on the Sussex’s notoriety I would guess.

Ohnonevermind · 30/12/2022 20:30

You are conflating a

production deal (cost plus model where Netflix retains the international rights - which is what the Sussex’s have

and licensing a show like ‘in the line of duty’ made by someone else independently where they license it for a length of time

They are completely different

CathyorClaire · 30/12/2022 20:30

It's surely only coincidental that two series have been unleashed in the month preceding the much anticipated tome.

Just to add, it was definitely early 2022 originally.
Someone posted this on Twitter, from the NMF website.
(Not that it specifically matters, but ‘sometime in 2022’ makes it sound like the tail end of the year was always a possibility, when that wasn’t the original plan)

But why is that a sticking point?

We have no idea why it was delayed. We have no idea when H & M got involved, just that it was announced in May (IIRC) that they were. That would have been in the works for quite a while before the announcement because contracts and lawyers.

This is just another excuse for detractors to spread a false narrative. This is, in fact, a great example of people on Social Media taking an innocent something, changing the narrative and presenting it in a negative way to others who will believe anything instead of doing the research themselves.

H & M have said that they want to use Archewell for inspiring programming. This documentary would fit that bill. Lots of Americans love the subjects of this documentary and will watch just for that. Others will watch because of the addition of H & M, either because they like them or they hate them. Either way, that is income for Netflix and the producers.

All I see here is that they made good on the promise of presenting inspirational programming and paying their own way in lives instead of living off taxpayer money.

Ohnonevermind · 30/12/2022 21:07

@onlylarkin

do you understand my point about licensing something like Seinfeld or a production deal for the Crown ? Completely different ?

Clearly they have struggled to generate the type of inspiring programming they wanted

onlylarkin · 30/12/2022 21:14

@Ohnonevermind

Do you understand, based on my link, that Netflix licenses original programming as well?

Netflix creates nothing.

Ohnonevermind · 30/12/2022 21:21

Netflix production deals - Netflix signs a deal with production companies to make programs for it

Roussette · 30/12/2022 21:24

All I see here is that they made good on the promise of presenting inspirational programming and paying their own way in lives instead of living off taxpayer money

^^ This

But they get criticised for absolutely everything.

Ohnonevermind · 30/12/2022 21:31

I don’t think they planned to ‘present’ other people’s work? Per your comment above

their original press release read.
“Our focus will be on creating content that informs but also gives hope,” the couple said in a statement. “As new parents, making inspirational family programming is also important to us.”

onlylarkin · 30/12/2022 22:09

There are 4 ways Netflix gets content.

www.whats-on-netflix.com/news/the-four-types-of-netflix-originals/

Let's look at a Netflix Original, The Crown.

It was written by Peter Andrew based on his plays.

It was created and filmed by Left Bank Pictures and Sony.

Netflix produces, they don't create.

Ohnonevermind · 30/12/2022 22:21

@onlylarkin

i know ? Did you read the article i posted about Netflix adopting a cost plus model for production deals ?

Inspirational 🤣 that's hilarious!
What's inspirational about a z list actress who tries to jump on the bandwagon of other people's life work to get a name for herself?
What's inspirational about a poor little rich boy who has done very little in life
Fucking joke

custardbear · 30/12/2022 22:27

.... and the mi eh they're living off of is by selling out their families, and making up lies and Mistruths - I hope they tank very soon foe their shitty behaviour and attitude

custardbear · 30/12/2022 22:28

Are you ok,? You sound very angry

custardbear · 30/12/2022 23:12

Fine thank you @Roussette ... kinda laughing at people who can see beyond their surface ..

Ohnonevermind · 30/12/2022 23:52

Only one sleep to go to their ‘inspirational’ presenting’ Rousette, I hope you’re be able to sleep with all the excitement 😀

BasiliskStare · 31/12/2022 00:26

I think I can see why they have used their famousness to earn lots of money - mainly Harry's. I do think they have told misleading things and downright lies. But hey ho doesn't impact me. I do agree that Meghan has unkind headlines - & there are some but surely that is a matter for the PCC. It does not excuse her from telling untruths. I am cross with the H&M Netflix thing for trying to say the whole of Britain is racist - by showing Brexit things etc - Of course there will be racists in the UK - as there will in America - but I do think they are overblowing the race thing. - My nieces are mixed race - no one gives a damn in our family. So I expect to be criticised for that in the sense I can't get on board with racism for every single thing . But apart from some headlines I think H & M were genuinely welcomed. But hey what do I know.

It’s not a ‘sticking point’ as such, just if you’re going to go down the ‘these are the only facts we know’ route, I thought I’d provide a link to what was said by the NMF.

I don’t know or care how they got involved, or when, but don’t see how providing a link from the NMF could ever be described as a ‘false narrative’?

I think it was actually the other way round, this posted on Twitter to ‘correct’ a ‘false narrative’ that this was an original Archewell production that H&M came up with, when it isn’t an initiative of theirs. There’s no problem with that, it wasn’t their original idea, so what if people made that known?

So it shouldn’t really be dismissed as fake news. It also shouldn’t be twisted as ‘detractors’ making a false narrative for people who ‘haven’t done the research themselves’ when they the people who posted clearly have done a bit of research into it. Don’t see how it’s a ‘negative’ if it’s standard practice for a production company 🤷‍♀️
