Calling Harry 'H'

Am I the only one who finds it very odd to hear Harry being called 'H' or is it an American/British thing?

I'm not from either countries so have no idea but every time I hear it from Meghan it just feels like scratching chalkboard.

I have a South African colleague who does it with my name I hate it awful but just cultural

HarryMeg · 15/12/2022 19:09

I've seen people using initials in emails and texts when they talk about others or themselves (which I do too) but to call them by their initials in real life? Really?

It may be a 'private' or affectionate nickname but to my ears it sounds dehumanising. I feel as though it takes aways his name and identity and reduces him to a letter...I would very much dislike that being used around me.

I'm sure I'm old fashioned though and this is some uber cool and exclusive way of referring to one another.

Ladyofthelake53 · 15/12/2022 19:10

I have a Harrison and everyone calls him H

Forgottenmypasswordagain · 15/12/2022 19:10

Never heard of that.

AlwaysLatte · 15/12/2022 19:12

My husband and I sometimes do this, but only occasionally. But we do write the initials on notes.

Abraxan · 15/12/2022 19:12

Isn't it just a 'nickname' and nothing more?
Lots of people do it, along with many other nicknames. 🤷‍♀️

bellinisurge · 15/12/2022 19:14

It's just a nickname. Don't let it trouble you

TinaYouFatLard · 15/12/2022 19:14

I take it as Meghan’s way of showing how super laid back and informal they are compared to the buttoned-up senior royals. It’s grating.

This was my impression too

Yep 🙄

Me and my DH would struggle
With that without laughing.

We are S and M ( or M and S ) Xmas Grin

Unifolorn · 15/12/2022 19:15

He calls her M at points as well, no idea why they both do it but its not just meghan.

Babdoc · 15/12/2022 19:15

H for me will always be Harry Kane, not the ginger whinger!

Oh don't be so ridiculous.

A few people call me by the first letter of my name.
They are the people who are closest to me.

I call 2 of my friends by the first letter of their names.
It's not dehumanising.
We really care for each other.

Mercurian · 15/12/2022 19:19

I had a South African boss who also did the first name initial thing to me. I think it's odd unless you're trying to be cryptic in a text or email.
I noticed not just Meghan calls him H, close friends and family do too.

dancingqueen123 · 15/12/2022 19:19

Who fucking cares?!

carefulcalculator · 15/12/2022 19:19

Oh FFS, it is a nickname tradition not uncommon in North America. Every bloody thing Meghan says or does is criticised. It's ridiculous how much that woman is picked over.

PenanceAdair · 15/12/2022 19:19

No it's solely a Meghan thing. No one has ever referred to a friend or family member by their initial before.

Goodness...Meghan is setting ridiculous trends left, right and center, isn't she?

Reallybadidea · 15/12/2022 19:23

I haven't seen it. Is it Aitch or Haitch? My feelings on it are dependent upon the pronunciation.

zingboom · 15/12/2022 19:24

I honestly can't get upset about a husband and wife having pet names for each other.

This 100%

quinceh · 15/12/2022 19:26

My name begins with H and some people call me H. It’s not something to trouble yourself about.

LadyHarmby · 15/12/2022 19:26

I’m genuinely concerned that Mumsnet is being trolled by bots starting negative threads about Meghan & Harry. So many about so many little things.

Justlovedogs · 15/12/2022 19:28

UK born and bread here. It's just a nickname. When I was a child, my family called me by first and middle initial as they are the same (think like BB). In fact, occasionally my sisters still do.
