Discussing the things we liked about Harry and Meghan's Netflix documentary series

1000 replies

MrsMaxDeWinter · 08/12/2022 14:22

There are so many threads on things posters hated about Harry and Meghan, the Netflix series, and fair play to those posters, so I thought I would have a go at stating a thread discussing some of the things that posters liked about the series.

I'll start.

I liked that this was supposed to be this bomb detonation, but has actually been a measured, warm, and loving look at H and M's relationship, and the pressures that the press put on them, and also on other royals. I genuinely did not notice anything incendiary. Maybe that is still to come.

I enjoyed the thoughtful insights shared on the invisible contract, especially, as Harry says, having to perform for a press that you know has said hurtful things about people you love.

I loved the warm memories of Sandringham, and meeting the Queen. And Meghan's memories of growing up. I think it was a wise, though sad, that they did not include Thomas. I really loved hearing Doria: my favourite bit is when a journalist offered her money, for an interview about Meghan and she said, "That's my child!"

I also learned for the first time about Meghan's relationship with her sister Samantha's daughter Ashleigh. I had no idea that she had been raised by her grandparents who adopted her, or that she had such a warm and caring relationship with Meghan. Along with Doria's, that was my favourite interview.

I enjoyed hearing from her childhood friends, as it is often said here that she had no friends who came to the wedding etc, just celebrities. They seem a tight nit grip who have been here fr years, and I am glad she has them.

I was gobsmacked that she needed security in Toronto after the relationship was announced.

I also thought the discussion on racism, in its wider context of colonialism and imperialism, was very well done, but then again it was led by David Olusoga and Afua Hirsch, who are always great, and I love their writing.

Most of all I love that Harry confronted head on the Nazi uniform debacle, and what he learned from it. And I loved, loved, loved, the segment on his life in Lesotho where they gave him the Sesotho name, "Mahale". A wonderful name.

“It was one of the biggest mistakes of my life,” Harry said. “I felt so ashamed afterwards. All I wanted to do was make it right. I sat down and spoke to the chief rabbi in London, which had a profound effect on me. I went to Berlin and spoke to a Holocaust survivor. I could have just ignored it and made the same mistakes over again in my life. But I learned from that.”

I predicted on another thread that Harry would address this and other episodes head on in his book. I was scoffed roundly for this. I expect him to say more in is book, and I am happy to be proved right.

If only for this, I am very glad they did this.

It’s not that I think MM is particularly wonderful. I don’t know her so I don’t have much of an opinion. What I don’t understand is why she inspires such extreme hatred and dislike. How do people form such an firm opinion based on so little actual fact?

Exactly!

At most she is a mildly irritating, self confident and fairly charismatic American.

And yet people really snarl about her. It seems so utterly irrational.

Also the "she is bringing down the monarchy" chestnut. Is that all it takes? Seriously?

One woman and one man can take down this ancient institution?

It is that fragile?

This is WILD!

I like that is all a fantasy brewed in the heads of Harry and Meghan

How do you know? Are you an eye witness to their relationship across the last 7 years?

I’ve watched all 3s episodes and really enjoyed it. I totally agree with the OP on all points, really interesting to see things from inside

Also agree that the real enemy is the press. Which is demonstrated even more now by the DM having 150 articles about it including a live blog?! Why??? They are obsessed.

Looking forward to more episodes

Indeed
The British media's obsession with them has given Netflix amazing money-cant-buy publicity. The fools were LITERALLY counting down the hours until the documentary dropped. 😂

onlylarkin · 09/12/2022 00:54

"At most she is a mildly irritating, self confident and fairly charismatic American."

In my opinion, this has always been the #1 problem and the racism is second to this.

I myself have never experienced xenophobia until I started posting on MN.

Hilarious. Of course, Harry couldn't just have a private chat with a local Rabbi. It had to be the Chief Rabbi, of course. And, yet Harry's supposedly really uncomfortable with hierarchy and privilege Hmm

And, I take it there were no Holocaust survivors to be found anywhere in the UK? Nope, not one? So, he had to fly to Berlin to find one. Yes, fly. Towering bastion of environmentalism that he is.

Thank you or this - it is BEAUTIFUL.

It is a perfect illustration of how barking mad everyone is when these two come up.

GreenLunchBox · 09/12/2022 00:56

Anyway, back to the point of the thread, I like the way it really comes across that Harry knows he's punching way above his weight with Meghan.

I loved "never mind about my list. This <gestures in Meg's direction> is the list" 😍

Quirkyme · 09/12/2022 00:58

Yeah I do believe Harry was talking utter tosh there tbh. I like Meghan, but I'm not a fan of him.

That sounded like BS, and it was quite insulting to think that he thought that even if those things were true, that meant he has someone "learnt his lesson". Insulting really.

I've only noticed the xenophobia since the Brexit vote. It's emboldened the racists and xenophobia is very much accepted now in Brexit Britain. Sad.

onlylarkin · 09/12/2022 01:00

@GreenLunchBox that is sad. One of the things in the documentary is the racist immigration discourse from 2015-2018. The exact time that Meghan came on the scene.

It was this way in the US as well. Here, Trump encouraged the nasty racists to come out of the woodwork.

Woopdaboo · 09/12/2022 01:01

Xenophobia from a lady whos just spent 3 hours complaining about the UK?

Justasec321 · 09/12/2022 01:06

Aspiringmatriarch · 08/12/2022 17:45

I think WidowTwanki is just trying to derail the thread tbh.

Agree!

Lainey - lainey Lui friend of Meghan and author of a fairly shit Canadian celeb news website. She was the person who claimed that Kate wouldn’t go shopping with Meghan Markle.

I just admire Kate’s ability to stay high, I hadn’t heard her admonish the press before someone linked to her being hounded on her doorstop

I’ve been teaching my youngest son about consent. He doesn’t have to accept hugs and kids if he’s not comfortable, equally he asks before hugging people outside the family.

This is a bit confusing to me!

On the Oprah interview Meghan said that Kate is a good person. She said those words. On telly. They left her mouth.

BUT - a gossip site claimed something about an incident that may or may not have happened and THAT means that MM is dragging KM down?

There are many hoops to jump through there......

minou123 · 09/12/2022 01:35

The other thing I enjoyed, although I wish they had talked about it more, was the made up "Royal Protocol" shite, that tabloids like to make up.

Nude nail polish, bump-touching, hand holding, stockings, hair styles, walking in front of the man, talking first - shite the Royal "experts" make up.

Quirkyme · 09/12/2022 01:37

onlylarkin · 08/12/2022 23:44

I loved hearing from Doria. I was shocked at the media contacting friends, and family and co-workers offering to pay for planted stories. I had heard they do that, but to hear it confirmed.

One that that stuck out to me is how positively Meghan talked about her father. I did not expect that.

I don't quite agree with your last paragraph.

She didn't speak specifically positively about him, and rightly so. She spoke matter-of-factly about him.

I would have done the same.

Justasec321 · 09/12/2022 01:37

I am going to jump on this thread if you don't mind. Like a lot of posters I do not get the rage against these two.

But I really HATE the way the women who marry in to the Royal family are used as human shields to protect the men who HAVE THE BLOODLINE.

Woman pitted against woman.

All of those men are shameful which makes me think that Harry has substance after all.

After all the headline handwringing they are very galant towards everybody. Her father was a disgrace, and yet she is vey graceful about him.

Her mother is amazing.

It did not come across as whiney at all.

I wonder if the problem really rests in the fact that they are hugely charismatic and outshine the main players?

Spot on tbh.

I have my views on Harry but I agree with everything else you said.

How people have such vitriol against Meghan particularly, as if she has done something personally to them, is beyond me.

You are correct. Maybe I expected her to talk badly, which she did not. Not sure why I expected it though? Maybe it is ny bias?

Quirkyme · 09/12/2022 01:42

I've just seen that Piers has an HOUR long "special" dedicated to Harry and Meghan today.

Every day this guy continues to show us that he is truly unhinged.

onlylarkin · 09/12/2022 01:43

He is unhinged and obsessive.

Quirkyme · 09/12/2022 01:45

Yes, I think it is your bias there @onlylarkin

onlylarkin · 09/12/2022 01:49

I have a toxic parent, so my bias is real.

Interesting, I do too.

It's actually how I was able to tell you that she doesn't speak positively about him, but matter-of-factly. It's also why I said I would have done exactly the same.

I can't remember her saying those words but I believe you. However, despite saying them, I really didn't come away from the OW interview thinking that she thought KM was a good person. Rather, she dragged her and diminished her.

SenecaFallsRedux · 09/12/2022 01:53

I really liked it. I'm not quite sure what I was expecting, but I thought that they came across as loving, warm, and authentic. And like several previous posters, I really appreciated the historical and social commentary intermixed with their personal stories.

The often extreme vitriol that they, especially Meghan, have faced in certain quarters of the press and on social media, including MN, is wildly disproportionate to any possible shortcomings they might have or missteps that they have made. I do think that raises legitimate questions about the extent to which racism and xenophobia, conscious and unconscious, have fueled that level of hate.

It was very classy on her part IMO. I likely would have done the same, but I also would have wanted to rip mine to shreds.

It could have gone either way with me. 😂
