Discussing the things we liked about Harry and Meghan's Netflix documentary series

1000 replies

MrsMaxDeWinter · 08/12/2022 14:22

There are so many threads on things posters hated about Harry and Meghan, the Netflix series, and fair play to those posters, so I thought I would have a go at stating a thread discussing some of the things that posters liked about the series.

I'll start.

I liked that this was supposed to be this bomb detonation, but has actually been a measured, warm, and loving look at H and M's relationship, and the pressures that the press put on them, and also on other royals. I genuinely did not notice anything incendiary. Maybe that is still to come.

I enjoyed the thoughtful insights shared on the invisible contract, especially, as Harry says, having to perform for a press that you know has said hurtful things about people you love.

I loved the warm memories of Sandringham, and meeting the Queen. And Meghan's memories of growing up. I think it was a wise, though sad, that they did not include Thomas. I really loved hearing Doria: my favourite bit is when a journalist offered her money, for an interview about Meghan and she said, "That's my child!"

I also learned for the first time about Meghan's relationship with her sister Samantha's daughter Ashleigh. I had no idea that she had been raised by her grandparents who adopted her, or that she had such a warm and caring relationship with Meghan. Along with Doria's, that was my favourite interview.

I enjoyed hearing from her childhood friends, as it is often said here that she had no friends who came to the wedding etc, just celebrities. They seem a tight nit grip who have been here fr years, and I am glad she has them.

I was gobsmacked that she needed security in Toronto after the relationship was announced.

I also thought the discussion on racism, in its wider context of colonialism and imperialism, was very well done, but then again it was led by David Olusoga and Afua Hirsch, who are always great, and I love their writing.

Most of all I love that Harry confronted head on the Nazi uniform debacle, and what he learned from it. And I loved, loved, loved, the segment on his life in Lesotho where they gave him the Sesotho name, "Mahale". A wonderful name.

“It was one of the biggest mistakes of my life,” Harry said. “I felt so ashamed afterwards. All I wanted to do was make it right. I sat down and spoke to the chief rabbi in London, which had a profound effect on me. I went to Berlin and spoke to a Holocaust survivor. I could have just ignored it and made the same mistakes over again in my life. But I learned from that.”

I predicted on another thread that Harry would address this and other episodes head on in his book. I was scoffed roundly for this. I expect him to say more in is book, and I am happy to be proved right.

If only for this, I am very glad they did this.

I wonder why we didn't get any more information about the racist comment about their unborn baby's skin colour. It was such a big part of the OW interview.

It's almost as if it never happened, though that can't be the case?

Belle Pepper, I’m sorry your son is feeling so bad. I hope you are getting plenty of support as you support your son. It is indeed a frightening thing.

—————————-

When someone says they are suicidal, I believe them. Doria’s distress was evident and I felt for her.

———————————

Lets start believing women, rather than trying to pick them apart. I despair for the world when people have such strong impulses to pick apart every thing a woman says about her life and decide she’s a dissembler, a liar, inauthentic etc.. When women do this they are in service to misogyny. And, as has become very apparent, the traditional media - some of which has proven itself to be rotten to the core. I’d be absolutely ashamed to be part of an industry which sees cruelty and abuse towards women as fair play.

Spot on

@BellePeppa

I do feel what you've said speaks to deeper issues that you have with Meghan more than anything else.

Roussette · 15/12/2022 22:27

Morestrangethings Such a good post of yours

Lampzade · 15/12/2022 23:11

Quirkyme · 15/12/2022 16:25

@Roussette

Omg really? That has been ridiculed?

I'm sincerely glad that I'm not part of that thread. That is vile, and it's sickening that many of those mocking her will be mums themselves. God help them.

Exactly.
It is really sickening. It says a great deal more about them . I actually pity them

Lampzade · 15/12/2022 23:13

Roussette · 15/12/2022 16:35

Yes, it's vile. @Quirkyme I better not repeat it, it might be against Talk Guidelines... however anyone who spoke up about how wrong it is to ridicule someone worried about their child's state of mind is called a 'mental health mourner'. Nice.

Bloody hell. There are some really vile people on MN.

Lampzade · 15/12/2022 23:19

BellePeppa · 15/12/2022 19:57

My son suffers from depression and alludes to suicide - it’s very worrying and stressful. Even though I am living with that cloud every day I just can’t reconcile it with Meghan. I may be wrong but I’m not completely buying it. I do think she didn’t want to be living that particular life but I don’t necessarily believe she was willing to die for it.

How would you feel if some had said the same thing about your ds as you have said about Meghan.?

Does she actually have to kill herself before some people believe her?

Hope your ds’s mental health improves

minou123 · 15/12/2022 23:35

I enjoyed the last 3 episodes. My thoughts:

Love the "clapback" to Piers Morgan. Hes been deperate to get a reaction from H &M and he got his wish. But not in the way he wanted. They only included the positive "rockstar" statement he said.
He'll be spitting feathers.

I think it was episodes 5, where they clipped all the negative things people on Talk Shows have said about Meghan.
My first thought was: fuck me, are they reading the vile mumsnet posts?!?

Overall, my opinion hasn't changed. I don't like them and I dont dislike them. But I will stick up for them against the bullying sexism and racism.

onlylarkin · 16/12/2022 04:10

Just watched 4 & 5. Wow.

I hope they bankrupt every tabloid in the world with lawsuits.

Ohnonevermind · 16/12/2022 08:46

@onlylarkin

Would Meghan be seen as a credible witness now after lying to the court, only coming clean after she was found out, and getting Omid Scobie to lie too so their stories matched.

That might hamper their chances in any court cases they might be tempted to take

all ‘their truths’ might be picked apart by a good barrister, rather like the Vardy case.

Except she won the case in question so it didn’t do any damage in that particular case. Therefore, if she was proven to have lied (and I haven’t read the transcripts so I don’t know if this is correct), the court have clearly decided it didn’t matter at least once.

Ohnonevermind · 16/12/2022 10:11

She won on a technical copyright issue. She was proven a liar, and suffered the reputation damage to her character. perhaps you should read the court transcripts before deciding it doesn’t matter.

The court case was not won on any merits regarding to her lies and and the Judge did give them a roasting for lieing, but fortunatly for M it did not affect the outcome as as it was won on another technicality.

Sigma33 · 16/12/2022 10:18

And she was awarded £1 in damages, so not a ringing endorsement. But yes, the court found that she did hold the copyright.

For people who hate cameras so much they seem to spend a lot time being filmed in their private life.

Did they say they hate cameras? and do you really believe this or are you making this up?

Meghan was an actress always in front of the cameras and comes across very well and we know Harry is becoming more confident in front as well , we know he hates the Paparazzi, understandably but not sure that is the same as hating cameras.

Ohnonevermind · 16/12/2022 10:26

Harry hates the sound of flash, aren’t they lucky that the managed to take so many photos at home at night without triggering a flash and Harry

Ohnonevermind · 16/12/2022 10:27

Perhaps the ‘kerching’ sound drowned out the sound of the flash for Harry

Ohnonevermind · 16/12/2022 10:29

In a documentary about his recent tour of Africa, Prince Harry told ITV: "I think being part of this family, in this role, in this job, every single time I see a camera, every single time I hear a click, every single time I see a flash it takes me straight back.

Harrys own words.

I find this post really sad that someone who has such a close connection and experience of another person who is clearly suffering can judge another in this way just because their description of their pain does not reconcile with what they know. I would imagine it is a horrible journey that will never end and we should try and be more understanding as none of us know how we would act or respond in these circumstances

That's not quite true.

She was awarded £1 for the damages for misuse of private information.
But the damages for copyright infringement is confidential. The only thing reported is that it was "substantial".

She was also awarded £300,000 for her legal costs

Yes as in the tabloid paparazzi not family photos. There is a difference. He would have been in front of cameras when he made that comment. How bloody petty!

I'm not a lawyer, so would be interested in the difference between damages for misuse of private info vs for copyright infringement. Is one for hurt feelings/reputation, and one for losing money from it?

Petty is very much the theme of the criticisms.

I'm not a lawyer either, but reading through the court and newspaper reports the £1 damage for the misuse of privacy was a tactic by the Sussex Legal Team.

Normally when calculating damages there is a set court calculation method. But what the Sussexs really wanted was to be awarded a % of what the Daily Mail financially earnt.
It's quite unusual, but by making the DM disclose how much money they made from these breaches in copyright and taking a % of the profits is a smart move.

But as a tactic to get the judge to agree
to award this type of damage calculation, the Sussex Legal Team, said in a court hearing, they will be happy to accept a "nominal" amount for the privacy breach, I.e £1, provided they get awarded a substantial award for the copyright breach. And Legal fees.
It was a smart move by the Sussexes
