Discussing the things we liked about Harry and Meghan's Netflix documentary series

1000 replies

MrsMaxDeWinter · 08/12/2022 14:22

There are so many threads on things posters hated about Harry and Meghan, the Netflix series, and fair play to those posters, so I thought I would have a go at stating a thread discussing some of the things that posters liked about the series.

I'll start.

I liked that this was supposed to be this bomb detonation, but has actually been a measured, warm, and loving look at H and M's relationship, and the pressures that the press put on them, and also on other royals. I genuinely did not notice anything incendiary. Maybe that is still to come.

I enjoyed the thoughtful insights shared on the invisible contract, especially, as Harry says, having to perform for a press that you know has said hurtful things about people you love.

I loved the warm memories of Sandringham, and meeting the Queen. And Meghan's memories of growing up. I think it was a wise, though sad, that they did not include Thomas. I really loved hearing Doria: my favourite bit is when a journalist offered her money, for an interview about Meghan and she said, "That's my child!"

I also learned for the first time about Meghan's relationship with her sister Samantha's daughter Ashleigh. I had no idea that she had been raised by her grandparents who adopted her, or that she had such a warm and caring relationship with Meghan. Along with Doria's, that was my favourite interview.

I enjoyed hearing from her childhood friends, as it is often said here that she had no friends who came to the wedding etc, just celebrities. They seem a tight nit grip who have been here fr years, and I am glad she has them.

I was gobsmacked that she needed security in Toronto after the relationship was announced.

I also thought the discussion on racism, in its wider context of colonialism and imperialism, was very well done, but then again it was led by David Olusoga and Afua Hirsch, who are always great, and I love their writing.

Most of all I love that Harry confronted head on the Nazi uniform debacle, and what he learned from it. And I loved, loved, loved, the segment on his life in Lesotho where they gave him the Sesotho name, "Mahale". A wonderful name.

“It was one of the biggest mistakes of my life,” Harry said. “I felt so ashamed afterwards. All I wanted to do was make it right. I sat down and spoke to the chief rabbi in London, which had a profound effect on me. I went to Berlin and spoke to a Holocaust survivor. I could have just ignored it and made the same mistakes over again in my life. But I learned from that.”

I predicted on another thread that Harry would address this and other episodes head on in his book. I was scoffed roundly for this. I expect him to say more in is book, and I am happy to be proved right.

If only for this, I am very glad they did this.

I love the fact that she was a little feminist even at a very young age..
I also love how resilient she was when embarking on an acting career. She is no Meryl Streep, but she worked hard and her determination paid off and she acted in a long running series for years.
To many, MM is regarded as a role model.
Extremely intelligent, driven, beautiful,
a humanitarian and to top it all she has the most beautiful handwriting, which I have always admired in others as my handwriting is terrible.
Harry is a very lucky man. I wouldn’t put up with the crap she has had to put up with for any man.She obviously loves him dearly

She had a following on SM, talking to world leaders etc. long before meeting H.

A pity racists had to try to suppress all this.

Exactly !

Without those same titles, would they have as much vitriol?

Yes they Would!

It's all about moving goalposts. Let's say they gave up titles. That would never be enough. They would have to change their names. Not speak.

Rhondaa · 10/12/2022 19:49

'That would never be enough. They would have to change their names. Not speak.'

Tbh I'm happy with them speaking. I think she has a lovely speaking voice and they are both charismatic. I just wish they'd stop trading off her very brief stint in the royal family. Move on and show some #positivity.

Why do you want an echo chamber where everyone agrees with you?
how breathtakingly arrogant to imagine some threads can only have one point of view.

It is not for me to say what the OP's intentions were but an echo chamber is only relevant if it was ever meant to be a debate thread. When it is a fan thread or a like thread, it's bad form to slate/neg the thing in question. Like going on a Glitterball thread just to slag off the show. We'd show you the door. Or going in the doghouse to say you're a cat person. The clue is in the title.

I wouldn't mind reasoned debate on a thread like this. But it's not. It's throwaway nasty comments designed to inflame.

Not a... "why do you say that because..." or
"I actually don't agree because..."

It's more like..."they're a couple of grifters" or "price is right. Hypocrites"

What is someone on here supposed to respond to that??

SequinsandStilettos · 10/12/2022 19:56

I also liked the humming birds (am easily pleased! Saw one in Harewood House as a child. Seeing them in the open like that would be magical even if his son was more interested in his own feet. Mine's like that!)
I liked Meghan sans make-up (not a chance I'd share home footage without lippy, fair play to her)
I liked the very brief footage of Archie (Love kids when they are little enough not to leg it or answer back)
I liked the explanation as to why she always wore white, beige and camel (I had wondered).

Maybe so Meghan can get a few positive screenshots as evidence for how popular they are?

Good point!

So agree! I've never seen a humming bird, but have seen a woodpecker in our garden, that was great!

And I love seeing little kids and their total not bothered chat!

Roussette · 10/12/2022 19:44

You keep telling me to hide the thread, why would I do that?

As I explained more than once, I find it odd you come on a slightly positive thread to say the opposite but if it floats your boat, go for it

Because you keep objecting to me daring to note that H&M are happy to reveal all on Netflix for an obscene amount of money

if you cannot cope with the fact that some people think they sold out, then don’t read the thread. Simple

SequinsandStilettos · 10/12/2022 20:08

Perhaps. I don't know. I know being NC or LC is really very hard for all involved. I also think if you feel you've had to be silent in the past or if you feel you have been wronged then putting up and shutting up might not work for you.
Perhaps after this - and the book - then they hopefully go on to pursue the other things they are doing and want to do/Life lived well is the best revenge.

You aren’t “supposed to respond”. It was an observation, a personal opinion. It was not addressed to anyone, it was an observation posted on a public forum.

i stated my view, succinctly.

but here is a more detailed response:

after clamours fir privacy, only releasing a handful of photos of their children, when Netflix coughed up all that dosh, H&M were only to happy to reveal all.

and I find that hypocritical

Samcro · 10/12/2022 20:10

It’s odd that if someone posts a positive post on the bashing threads they are trolled and shouted down as they want an echo chamber
one positive thread and it’s all omg I must be allowed to post on it
cries of echo chamber
then they pic arguments and target posters so that the thread if they play it right gets deleted
and they then have their echo chamber

SequinsandStilettos · 10/12/2022 20:12

Although part of me would happily crowdfund 100 mill to see Meg play herself in a future series of The Crown just to watch you lot implode! Xmas Wink Xmas Grin
I'm not very mature for a half-centenarian.

Exactly!

Double standards. There's enough negative threads for those who feel inclined that way, to post on. But no. It's not enough. Let's just trash a slightly more positive thread with inane nasty comments

I watched it with an open mind. All I thought was that rightly he wants to avoid the press, yes Netflix is the press, however to their control. I can't imagine what it must be like being hounded with paparazzi cameras since birth that eventually killed his mum. He couldn't grieve in private, he couldn't do anything in private.
So many unresolved issues he probably has about his up bringing, William too.
They clearly love each other and their children, I really don't see why the hatred.

Elisabetty · 10/12/2022 20:17

I just rewatched the documentary. I really loved how vibrant and full of life Meghan is. I can absolutely see why Harry fell instantly in love with her. As to negative posts, I just ignore them. Haters are gonna hate and they are not gonna change their mind regardless what happens. Some people are toxic and the best way to deal with them is the konmari-method.

SequinsandStilettos · 10/12/2022 20:20

I did wonder with the HARRY SNAPS headline if The Sun headline originally was GINGER SNAPS but they knew they wouldn't get away with it.
Re the pp who moaned that Harry (can't do Haz, sorry) called himself " a ginger" he has reappropriated it. It did remind me of Tim Minchin though, which is a great thing.

Rhondaa · 10/12/2022 20:21

'I can't imagine what it must be like being hounded with paparazzi cameras since birth that eventually killed his mum. He couldn't grieve in private, he couldn't do anything in private.'

And neither could his brother! Yet we have H's wife making pa comments about formality and such like. H should be supporting his db, yes moan about the media but leave the rf critique out of it.

SequinsandStilettos · 10/12/2022 20:22

Declutter them?! Xmas Grin

Inkanta · 10/12/2022 20:24

Exactly. He's not having it with the tabloid press. Good for him - taking them on.

SequinsandStilettos · 10/12/2022 20:24

I think it is weird you curtsey to your gran though and that it isn't different behind closed doors. Maybe I just watched too much Spitting Image growing up.

That was a perfect example of a trashy, inane, nasty statement.

why does it bother you so much that I think they are a pair of hypocrites?

notanotheroneagain · 10/12/2022 20:27

H&M said there are all these 'whack a mole' they have to deal with'. And I can see it on here as well and as an antiracist, you can see these micro aggressions also need to be dealt with because that is what really has the influence - as the papers have discovered and use as much as possible (then gaslight with 'they are being pretty )

I was watching QT the other day and the question from the tabloids was "is H&M going to destroy the RF", or something along those lines. I just thought, NO, the question really should be 'is the RF going to change and conform to the diverse UK and the CW?'. This is what this is all about, afaics.

Royalist will tell you :

-MM did not know what she was getting into? What is that exactly? Racism that will never change, because of made up protocols?

  • 'MM did not think she would come in and change an old institution, did she?'. What do they mean by this? That the RF has a right to remain racist forever?

-'If she does not like the RF, she must give back the titles.' You mean because of 'the help' who will not move on with the times H&M must leave the palace to do their racism in peace. NO, the rf keep changing over the years, they will change now and get on with diversity, whether they like it or not. What we will not do is have the only high ranking diverse royals being chased out by 'the help ' - (yes, I know haters will make a big deal out of that phrase more than you do about racism itself). In fact, I will go further and say this 'help' have titles and now see themselves even above their 'superiors' - yes MM is a senior royal. Just as you would see KC and Camilla as the head of house, you must recognise that by blood H and A&L are superior - you get it now? So, NO H&M should not give up their titles. Stop talking crazy ! You know how this will look in history books?

Also, where you there shouting how Lady SH must loose her titles for admitting racism and being denounced by W? If not, shut up !

Seriously, racists are the ones who hate this country and making it look bad more than anyone !

I think it's weird too and outdated but i wouldn't be so rude as to laugh about it on TV. Have they no media awareness? Cultures are different and people should accept and even respect that.
