Am shocked Meghan said this…

She said: 'Even when Will and Kate came over and I was meeting her for the first time I remember I was in ripped jeans, I was bare foot, like I was a hugger, I have always been a hugger I didn't realise that is really jarring for a lot of Brits.'

'I started to understand that the formality on the outside carried through on the inside, that there is a forward facing way of being and then you close the door and thing OK we can relax now, but that formality carries over on both sides and that was surprising to me.'

What an utterly horrible thing to say about your sister and brother-in-law. I am done with her now. People are DIFFERENT Meghan. We are not all like you you you you.

The curtsey thing was just her laughing at herself I thought. Because she was nervous and it probably all felt quite strange, like something out of a film. So she was making a joke out of her attempt at curtseying.

username8888 · 08/12/2022 18:20

What she's saying in her typical passive aggressive way, is that I am this earth spirit with my flowing hair and bare feet, and Kate is this stuck up prig along with her stuck up husband, who wear formal clothes and are always formal. Well we've all seen pictures of Kate in jeans and relaxed. I'd say she and William were just not taken in with Meghans fakery.

Sorry but some of the posts on this thread are completely batshit 😂

How on earth have you let this couple get so deep into your head! It's almost car-crash fascinating to watch.

The curtsey mockery is also four going onto forty. I mean, who does that? It may be ridiculous to her but it is really only associated with one person in the living memory of most people: the late Queen. It is just so crass and tone deaf. Almost delivering a joke against all Britons to get the whole of the US nation laughing - except that it is not even funny and Harry's expression confirms that he knows it crosses a line but he is too spineless and co dependent to stop her.

I also wonder - fine, you’re American and you find it all ridiculous. That’s absolutely fine to think that. But you choose to marry into a family where that is not just done out of habit, it is done authentically and with respect. Maybe that’s a sign that this family, and the role you will be expected to take on, is not a good fit for you?

And especially, why bother doing this publicly when you are happy to openly mock the whole practice? Would you openly mock bowing to the Japanese Emperor should you have to meet him in your activist or your royal career? Somehow I think not.

She wasn't. She was talking what it was like for her in the beginning when she'd never curtseyed before. She was taking the piss out of herself

Exactly this. But of course everything she says has to be wilfully misconstrued! 🙄

Serenster · 08/12/2022 18:56

Opinions will vary, Roussette, but it looked a whole lot to me like she was taking the piss out of the practice.

Anyone who doesn't like them would think that.

She talked of it in the context of her first curtsey.

Roussette · 08/12/2022 18:58

p.s. the practice is beyond ridiculous anyway 😂

Serenster · 08/12/2022 19:03

You haven’t answered my question though - do you think she’d post an identical video to her bowing to any important Japanese person she met?

Serenster · 08/12/2022 19:04

(She did giggle through a traditional Māori greeting though, so maybe I’ve answered my own question)

OliverBabish · 08/12/2022 19:09

I don’t get why people go to war online for Will and Kate. No one knows them! Just like no one knows Meghan and Harry.

ThighMistress · 08/12/2022 19:09

I agree it is so “I am so warm and casual, me, and not ice cold and stuffy.” As for hugging, well, this is a formal family and with ANY person you kind of dodge around a bit gauging what sort of greeting is appropriate. You don’t fling yourself at someone at a first meeting especially when as a new gf you are the supplicant, trying to make a good impression.

For some reason she really has got it in for Kate. However much M’s fans deny it, it is crystal clear that a lot of jibes are aimed straight at Kate. I guess that’s what happens when you don’t invite Meghan on your shopping trip!

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 08/12/2022 19:10

I agree, I think she was taking the piss out of herself, but Harry looked a bit shocked like he was thinking WTF?

She isn't meeting a Japanese person (that I know of) and a small bow of the head is very different to a servile curtsey which is not something that comes naturally which was her point.

Serenster · 08/12/2022 19:04

Not much different to Charles and Camilla in hysterics at Inuit throat singing.

Are no royals allowed to giggle? Or is it only Meghan.

mothermotherm · 08/12/2022 19:16

You are emphasising ‘marrying in to another nationality’ - why?

It must’ve been a bit of a shock that the formalities continued in private. This is not an attack on British people or our culture. No one I know courtesy’s to their grandmother and every family I know do hug each other. I would find it equally as surprising as she did if this wasn’t welcomed in private.

You seem to be looking for reasons to be offended just like every other person who feeds off slandering two people who are absolutely nothing to do with their own life.

It is so tiring the lengths people go to in order to find fault with others. Is there honestly nothing else to occupy your time with? I genuinely could not get so worked up about another persons perspective.

Serenster · 08/12/2022 19:23

I think the questions I’ve asked about a woman with a degree in International Relations (from, as a poster here was at pains to point out, a top US university) and who had an internship with the US Foreign Department in South America about which she said she was delighted to be valued for her brain, are absolutely fair enough. If the rules of protocol of another country and culture are a joke for you, maybe you’re not the right person for the role of representing that country

(Also to Roussette, Inuit throat singing is intended to be funny. When you have a face to face competition, as Charles and Camilla were watching, the first singer to laugh is out. Quite a different situation. You still haven’t answered the question, though).

LuckySantangelo35 · 08/12/2022 17:27

I dunno I would make a bit of effort to my appearance at meeting my sil for the first time - why wouldn’t you?! Why would you wanna look like a slob?

all this ‘take me as you find me’ stuff is a bit arrogant in my opinion

I think so.

I thought Meghan was very funny describing it but was very much laughing at herself being completely lost because, well, wtaf? Imagine it. 😂😂😂

VioletLemon · 08/12/2022 19:27

Honestly just can't understand why Harry wasn't ultra careful in supporting her by letting her know family norms so she could decide for herself. I mean, WTAF was he playing at. I don't think he's intentionally malicious but he's had such an entitled life that he thinks it's appropriate for him to now lecture UK and the world on the horrors of the Empire. Maybe he'd like to donate his share of QE2 inheritance to some of the countries mentioned. Is he now a mixed race guru because 5 minutes ago he married MM and had 2 kids. More than anything though, it's the "right?" at the end of every sentence.

Where did she say the rules and protocol were a joke to her? She said she was surprised and out of her depth. She laughed at herself trying to curtsey. Why are you so offended?

Gilmorehill · 08/12/2022 19:30

The curtesy story is different to one they told in the OW interview (or somewhere). Previously they said they arrived at the royal lodge and Fergie came running out, saying the Queen was there (or on her way) and Fergie taught her to do it.
In their engagement interview, they said H proposed in the kitchen while M roasted a chicken. I thought that sounded weird. In the Netflix show, the pictures show they are outside on a picnic blanket.

Gilmorehill · 08/12/2022 19:30

Recollections do vary!

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 08/12/2022 19:38

This who thread is just batshit and just hypocrisy at its best, it’s loathsome actually to witness 2 people being attacked on all levels for being in the public eye.

She was victimised, she was being racially slurred, she was targeted to be a public hate figure and literally the royal “BLACK” sheep, it’s absolutely VILE to watch and she is STILL being all those, it’s frankly disgusting.

The disinformation the media and the public spread about them is criminal.

Yes I have. You just don't like my answer.
