It's landed - 3 episodes with what I assume is 3 next week.

OP posts:

It doesn’t sound the same to me but then I’m working class northerner so I’m probably a bit too sensitive about toffs trying to sound normal 😁

”Just call me xxx” sounds like a reminder that I’m actually superior and am being magnanimous in allowing you to call me by an informal name. Whereas “I prefer xxx if that’s okay” sounds like you’re doing me a favour in using my preferred name.

I’m probably reading way too much into it though.

Sigma33 · 09/12/2022 20:35

Roussette · 09/12/2022 20:14

Other than that I just ask everyone to call me by my name (and a shortened version of my full first name at that)

I presume you haven't been on here since they first met. He tried saying 'Just Call Me Harry' at an event.

Just on here, he had the piss taken out of him something rotten, even having his name abbreviated to JCMH with endless laughing emojis and insults.

Surely if he genuinely wanted that he wouldn't care about the emojis and merriment? That would die away as people realised he meant it rather than being a petulant reaction to not getting what he wanted - the laughter came from the juxtaposition of the new 'use my first name' and the years of using a title. It didn't seem genuine.

Surely living authentically is more important than whether people on MN turn it into a joke? Surely popularity doesn't matter when compared to benefitting from slavery?

Actually, that's exactly the impression it gave me but I couldn't think how to phrase it. Thanks Smile

I am just saying about the reaction to him on here trying to be called Harry. It was incessant ridicule.
That's all

He and she can't do a thing right. If I was them - because of that - I would just barrel on doing what I think is best.

Certainly - and they are quite happy to barrel on and keep the title!

Which suggests to me that they value it, as they could quite easily stop using it (especially as titles are not legally recognised in the USA), and could take steps to relinquish it legally in the UK.

Which leads me to conclude that they value being part of the RF, while also criticising it.

Roussette · 09/12/2022 21:04

No, they're just using the names They Are Entitled To

Like AAndrew. Like Sarah.

Sigma33 · 09/12/2022 21:06

Yes, they are entitled to them

They don't have to use them.

By choosing to use them they are showing what they value

Sigma33 · 09/12/2022 21:09

Andrew and Sarah have not educated us on the connection between the RF and slavery, and the Commonwealth and Empire.

H&M have educated us on the problematic aspects of the RF and Commonwealth. At the same time have chosen to keep using the titles associated with the RF and Commonwealth.

Keep them? They are their titles. What a can of worms it would be to give them up Andrew and Sarah
For all you know, Charles has begged them to keep them because of that. We all know that the media might start looking at Andrew again, and not just his paedophile friend, and jailed friend.

I hope they keep using them. Whilst Andrew and Sarah clearly do.

😂maybe that's the case.

No doubt, if so, as a matter of integrity they will tell us in the next round of episodes.

And insist that they will not be used to shield their dodgy uncle - again as a matter of integrity.

Or, maybe, they like having them.

Which is fair enough. But what annoys people (well, me, at least) is that they moan about the consequences of being royal (eg press intrusion) but don’t acknowledge / aren’t prepared to give up the massive privileges which come with being royal (eg wealth and status). It’s all a bit “have your cake and eat it too”.

Its interesting with the monarchy. They need to be relatable but completely different to the general public. It is a difficult balance, but one which the Queen managed pretty well. She lived and breathed duty and service, and William and Kate seem to be following in her footsteps. Harry and Meghan don’t want that life (which is fair enough) but Harry in particular is so privileged he can’t even recognise his privilege (if that makes sense).

You have rather changed tack you know.

From 'it would take an Act of Parliament' to 'maybe Charles has begged them to keep them to take the heat off Andrew'

😂

No more than the can of worms which came from stepping away from royal duties. They’d have garnered a lot more respect if they said “we’re done with the whole thing”. Their actual version “we hate royal life and want our children away from the spotlight but we’ll keep using our titles, want the trademark and complain about our kids not having sufficiently grand titles” is hypocritical.

Nope.

Any or all of that could apply. No changing tack

Except the precedent of Princess Patricia relinquishing her royal titles by a warrant signed by the king in 1919 - so an Act of Parliament not necessary.

And Edward's children not using their prince/ss titles simply by choosing not to do so.

Roussette · 09/12/2022 21:47

Never heard of Princess Patricia from over 100 years ago

Edward & Sophie decided for their children. Now one is over 18 maybe she will decide to use it, time will tell

Well, Louise has turned 18 and no sign so far.

Princess P is over 100 years ago - the relationship between the RF and slavery even further in the past, but H&M seem to think it is relevant.

Also, no reason to think that anything has changed constitutionally that would prevent H relinquishing his title by the same mechanism if he wanted to - it seems likely he doesn't want to.

JemimaTiggywinkles · 09/12/2022 21:52

Anne chose for her children, who are now adults who don’t use the titles. IMO, prince and princess should only be for children of the monarch, or those who will be (ie Harry, William, George, Charlotte, Louis but not Beatrice, Eugenie, Archie, Lilibet or Charlotte / Louis kids in their turn).

But I don’t think Harry can claim credibility about how much he doesn’t like being royal while still using the title. Either be in or be out.

Sigma33 · 09/12/2022 21:53

And even if Louise chooses to be known as 'Princess', the point is she can choose to use it or not use it. H&M are choosing to use it.

Quite an interesting character! She was quite radical for her time as a British princess. Perhaps, even, more radical than H&M? 😂

There are loads of radical ones. H and M are nothing in comparison to what some got up too.

Sigma33 · 09/12/2022 22:08

A supporter of women's suffrage before WW1, turned down eligible suitors and married for love at the (old, by that era's standards) age of 32 to a man who was not of a 'suitable' rank.

She was very different from her conformist cousins!

Sigma33 · 09/12/2022 22:10

Thoughts @Roussette ?

Sigma33 · 09/12/2022 22:26

Good night @Roussette .

I realise that you have invested so much in defending H&M it is disappointing that they haven't lived up to your hopes.

They've let others down as well, those who are close to them. It's not personal.
