Sounds a weird thing to say. But Meghan really has had the life of a lot of women's complete fantasies hasn't she ?

  • born in hot / glam country
  • parents win the lottery
  • received private education. Hobbies. Makes great connections ag school eg Katherine foster
  • financially supported into late 20s
  • enables her to have a fantasy actress career
  • can pay for cosmetic surgery eg nose, chin and hair treatments. Has amazing clothes
  • marries a prince
  • has 2 kids as an older mother without assistance
  • lives in a luxurious beautiful community

Never been unwell , never done a boring / basic job in her life, has no financial worries ever.

On paper it is so much better than my life !!

I've had to grind my way out of poor upbringing and get into higher pay brackets like most do!

Yet, it just never happened for her. Her career pinnacle was being a second-string actress on a second rate Canadian TV show. Many Canadians/Americans had never even heard of her.

I first started watching Suits when i lived in France and several of my friends there did. My sister and brother in law in Ireland watched it. When I moved to the U.K. several of my colleagues had watched it. We all knew who Meghan Markle was when their relationship first came out.

Yes, I'm sure you did know who she was because you watched 'Suits'. My point being that 'Suits' wasn't a top tier production success, it was a second tier TV show - and Megan Markle wasn't even one of the lead actors in it.

RosettaStormer · 07/12/2022 17:08

I had never heard of Suits.

EspeciallyD · 07/12/2022 18:16

I'd heard of it but never seen it and never heard of Meghan till she was with Harry.

MarshaMelrose · 07/12/2022 18:25

It’s not like they stamped their foot for a big wedding and no one was interested.

I was interested. I love a royal wedding. But it was never a given their wedding was going to be public. People were very prepared for a private ceremony, particularly because of concern over the cost. I'm glad it was public and it had high viewing figures across the world but they could have chosen not to. It was their choice and no one made them. Its annoying to hear them say they didnt really want to do it but they were doing as a favour.
They should just stop chatting shit. No wonder Charles gets exasperated by Harry.

Did it appeal to a certain age group? I'd heard of it but never watched it, never heard of her but I know at least one of my kids was a fan.

I'd never heard of it or her til Harry. I'm not sure how much it was shown here? If at all?

AliensToTheLeft · 07/12/2022 18:33

I really like Suits. It’s one of those ones that I rewatch every now and again.

I think it was on netflix so not all of us would have the opportunity. I can't be sure though, it could have been on a freeview channel. I'm sure someone can confirm or correct me.

Maybe 20s-30s. I was in my early 20s in 2011 but my partner and my sister were in their early 30s. The oldest person I knew who watched it was late 40s but we were colleagues at a law firm so maybe she skewed that since it was a legal drama. I worked in media when I first started watching it.

Same. I enjoyed it, though didn't enjoy the final season as much.
I'd watch the earlier ones again though.

I thought Suits was a fairly well known show, even if people didn't watch it.

I don't have Netflix. I won't be getting Netflix. It definitely wasn't on freeview. Some channel, maybe sky?, did show some episodes after they were engaged/married. I only watched an episode to see her really. She wasn't very good. It wasn't very good. Nothing original but, then, it doesn't have to be if people are enjoying it.

If I had a choice, I'd much rather had Meghan's life than Kate's. She's not bound to protocol, she can do whatever she wants, dress however she wants, whilst still enjoying luxurious life etc. It's a shame her and Harry keep milking this RF story over and over again. Could do better. Could use the fame and money to do something that really matters, instead of trying to act so miserable. Hard to feel any sympathy knowing what kind of shit people need to deal with. She can have whatever she wants- best clothes, travelling, best medical care, best schools for her children by just making such a mess in the past few years. She's also a beautiful woman, but obviously she needed some money for it to happen too! Braces, nose job, hair straightening, best skincare etc.

I agree. They are both very fortunate to have the lifestyle but not have to do any duties or be hounded by the press. Or work till they die with no retirement.

But they do not have a choice about a big public wedding

Harry and Meghan were given the option of a small private wedding (much more appropriate for a divorcee anyway) and they rejected the suggestion. They insisted on all the bells and whistles.

They did have a choice - look at what King Charles did when he married Camilla (also a divorcee). A small ceremony, space for the union-jack suited devotees to cheer them on and a private reception. Job done.

But oh no... that wasn't what a certain person wanted...

monsteramunch · 08/12/2022 20:59

@Speedweed

Do you mean Meghan here, rather than Harry If so how do you know it's what she wanted rather than what he wanted, or they both wanted?

If they had opted for an intimate wedding there would have been kickback on that too, saying she was robbing the public of watching Harry get married or something equally hyperbolic and woman blaming 🤷🏻‍♀️

Nat6999 · 08/12/2022 21:28

I'm just watching the documentary now, I was on the fence before today, now I really feel for her, a father who is a total arsehole & the Royal family gave her no support, so much that her & Harry quit the UK. Had Diana still been alive I honestly think that they would still have been in the UK because she would have guided & supported her in the ways of the Crown & also given both Harry & her a bolthole to breathe away from the glare of the Royal family. They both look to be happier in the US, they have more freedom to be themselves & to enjoy bringing up their children without being expected to do Royal duties, having to go away & leave their children.

I can’t grasp how you can attribute these values to a deeply troubled woman who died decades ago, it does no one any favours .everyone feels for Diana and her struggles and what happened. But this attributing these saviour like qualities to her is disturbing,

Coxspurplepippin · 08/12/2022 21:43

I think Diana and Meghan would have been at loggerheads. It would have made for a rip roaring MN thread.

MarshaMelrose · 08/12/2022 22:22

I just dont think that would have been the case. I speak as someone who loved watching the wedding, but there just wasn't a public energy for it. As I remember it, the country felt a bit depressed and people were curious but there was no great outcry for it. I'm sure if they'd opted for a private wedding with a public wave to show her dress, I can't see anyone bothering or blaming anyone.

onlylarkin · 09/12/2022 00:33

I sometimes wonder what the world would be like today if Diana had not died. What would the Rf look like now? Because I think, though I am speculating, they would have been at increasingly bigger odds and the press would have had a field day.

I wonder if she'd have been a MIL written about on MN. DIL saying she won't let go of "her boys" can't accept they are men with wives and kids. Or maybe she'd have loved having a relationship with attractive young women, doting on her GC, enjoying buying baby girl things. We will never know.

Thinkingswillbebetter · 09/12/2022 13:14

roarfeckingroarr · 06/12/2022 09:29

She's incredibly fortunate yet incredibly blind to her own good luck. She constantly plays the victim despite being afforded great privilege. She's a hypocrite who expects everything on her own terms.

That's why people don't like her. Not because her mother is Black.

100% this!

AliceMcK · 09/12/2022 13:48

RosettaStormer · 07/12/2022 14:41

My understanding was she lived with her father during the week and spent some weekends with her mother. Her father was the main carer. Didn't her mother disappear for a long period of time also? I am sure it wasn’t 50:50. Her father mainly brought her up.

She lived with her mother during the week and her dad at weekends. This is what she said on the documentary.

RosettaStormer · 09/12/2022 13:50

It’s puzzling that she had a closer relationship with her dad then. All the photos of her childhood are with her dad not her mother.

antelopevalley · 09/12/2022 13:52

You have no idea who she had a closer relationship with. Her dad has released photos to the public, her mum has not.
