Awful story just broken on twitter about horrendous racist questioning from Lady Hussey to Ngozi Fulani from Sister Space at yesterdays VAWG event.

Lady Hussey has resigned.

There's always apologists for this behaviour on MN. I have lost count of the times MNers have told me not to be offended by these interrogations.

I met Prince Philip a few times in his late 80s and early 90s. We managed to chat easily without him saying anything like this. Age isn't the issue here.

What difference would their skin colour make? Why the need to discuss it at all?

Because we all wanted to discuss it and we still do now that they are having kids who are mixed as well. We do not care what the thought police has to say about it.

CarefreeMe · 30/11/2022 15:57

Why didn't she just say 'I'm British but my parents came here in the 50s' and state the country in the first place . What is racist about asking about people's heritage?

What a ridiculous thing to say.

If someone asks you where you’re from, you tell them where you’re from.

Why would you go into your parents heritage if you are British?

No one would care where your parents or ancestors came from and I wouldn’t even think to answer this question unless asked out right, which it wasn’t.

If someone had an accent then maybe you would ask where the accents from but definitely not to a stranger or someone you just met.

I can guarantee that if you met a new person at work who was British your first question would not be what is your heritage.

I think the women should have asked Susan the same question, as it’s apparently such an appropriate question.

Yep it's all so distasteful but once again we only have one side of a story which we are all compelled to believe because we are all not racist are we?
Not following, care to expand on what you are talking about?

No not really. One side of a story is always well balanced and of course true.

But you have NF side - couldn't be any clearer and you have the BBC statement from the RF including an apology from SH - is that not two sides or are you waiting for SH to make her statement on camera before you will believe she made those comments Confused

I fail to see the need to make this into more than it is.

Well, a black woman married in to te family a few years back. Within a few years she had to run out of the place/palace because the pressure, and relentless public humiliation left barely able to function. Her husband decided to go with her.
It was headline news for a while. You may have missed it though.

She wasn't run out.
She and her husband first requested a half in half out set up in which they could financially benefit from their titles, yet still remain very much part of the RF.

They posted it all over their social media and press releases. Maybe you missed it.

Discuss away, if you have nothing better to talk about. No need to be rude and suggest that people who find things offensive need a safe space or therapy.

Haha stop the bus . I don't share your view . Complete over reaction and the demonisation of an old lady . I don't for one minute think and intended to be offensive .

I 2nd this... You are a disgrace
and every post just makes you sound worst!

RaRaRaspoutine · 30/11/2022 16:00

Canthave2manycats · 30/11/2022 15:31

Exactly! All she had to say was, "British born and bred and my heritage is..." - job done without all the trauma! Isn't she proud of where her family came from?

I think people need to remember as well - this is an elderly lady, 83, brought up in a very different culture. Doesn't make her racist?? When you've lived most of your life in an era where your every word wasn't dissected for perceived slights, these PC times must be a challenge. I feel sorry for Lady Susan - I mean, headline news, elderly lady opens her mouth and puts her foot right in it. She must be traumatised too, by the attention this has brought to her and the embarrassment to the RF, as the hysterical go, "oh this just proves they are racist, doesn't it?"

In this one post, you've tried to dictate how a black woman speaks about herself AND tried to excuse the perpertrator. Sit down,

@LookingAtYou

If I were introduced to Mrs Hussey there is no way she would ask me where I am from, and follow that with where I am REALLY from.

I am white and I have a very English name. But I am not British.

RingingRain · 30/11/2022 16:03

Newwardrobe · 30/11/2022 15:33

I'm white (but could have been born in any European country)so if I'd been asked where I'm from and I said I'm British, the person asking wouldn't have kept on asking, but where are you really from , they would have just accepted my answer. Why should a woc explain her heritage if she's British.

I'm a white European Brit with dual citizenship and have lived most my life in the UK but have still an accent. I am used to rude idiots asking me where I'm from and continuing to ask even when I say London. there is a particularly annoying supermarket cashier who will not let it go and asks every time where my accent is from. I have complained to his manager but they are not interested.

It's incredibly rude to insist where are you from and not taking the persons answer at face value. However, this lady might have dementia and she is vulnerable due to her age. It's the stupid palace staff who should blamed and dealt with for having this ancient loose cannon attend such an important function. The palace is hopeless out of touch and enough is enough. It actually shows what MM has been up against. Horrible.

I've now reported myself for being an idiot.

I'm Asian and no one Asian person I know would use the word 'colouring' to describe themselves.

What a Croque of shit.

The hair touching and insistent questioning makes me think of how some people (racists) behave - called ‘othering’ - a psychological term 👍🏿☘️ I would try to be charitable 🙄 and also be inclined to think Lady Susan had a cognitive disease or had been at the drink . This behaviour is unacceptable

PeekAtYou · 30/11/2022 16:04

I fail to see the need to make this into more than it is.

The Palace are supposed to be committed to improving diversity, ensuring that staff aren't bullied and feel like they can make complaints about issues because they will be handled fairly.

Events like this will be a small proportion of interactions that occur daily and are unacceptable in this day and age.

ScrappyCats · 30/11/2022 16:04

I think Susan was quite clearly trying to demean the guest and make it clear that she thought she didn’t really belong at the gathering -despite having been invited. Looking at her name badge indicates this right at the beginning of the conversation, as if she was pointedly checking if she might be a member of staff - that was a very rude way to start a conversation with anyone, let alone moving her hair out the way!

there is a lot of difference talking to your family, than someone you meet at work.

My mother would be 100 soon, if still alive. She might have asked where someone's family came from - once. She would never have pushed it. Because she wasn't rude, to start with!

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 30/11/2022 16:08

The issue was that the royal aide saw the woman's race, not her role. If it had been a white woman, she'd have been asking all about the charity she'd founded, not delving into her heritage from generations ago.
