That seems to be the main talking point from the press. It has been referenced by PageSix and the Today show in America.

William and Kate’s US trip highlights how they’re not Harry and Meghan

I should have left your quote out, I should have directed my post to ohnevermind, as that was the post I was highlighting.

Ok, But I don't actually see much difference between the two posts. I know that you're a staunch defender of Meghan so I took it as you were offended by that. But I accept that was my perception and I could be completely wrong.

But just to correct you, the earrings were a wedding present to Meghan. They were given directly to QEII to pass on to her. And they remained in Meghan's possession as does all jewellery presented to an individual royal. They can't sell it or get rid of it in any way and reverts to the Crown on their death but it's theirs for their lifetime. Can you imagine the uproar if the Queen had refused to give the earrings to her. " I woz robbed. The Queen stole my jewels!"

And you still haven't criticised Meghan for wearing them.

Kate looked stunning in that green dress, and Hollywood makeover which really suits her. Sadly it all looks orchestrated to please/win the American public. That hairdo and that makeup, while a pleasant discovery is only a product of a carefully orchestrated plan.

Well, of course. Why wouldn't she want to be thought well of? It's hardly an orchestrated plan - just good manners. Didn't Barak and Michelle Obama do the same when they came to the UK and met the Queen. Dressed up nicely and were pleasant.

Coronateachingagain · 03/12/2022 22:41

Oh of course everybody dresses nicely who wouldn't. But Michelle will always be Michelle, no time to change makeup style.

That's quite sad. Because Michelle Obama has always said that women should take time out to do things for themselves, to spend time on themselves. She gives talks on the subject. I mean if she's happy not updating her make up that's her choice and no shade on her: it is, after all, just make up. But the fact that she doesn't do it because she doesn't have to time to is rather sad. Come on Barak, you lazy bum, give Michelle a hand round the house so she can spend some time on self-care.

antelopevalley · 04/12/2022 01:36

Self care? Maybe Michelle Obama does not see changing make up as self care, but as a chore.
And I am sure Michelle is not doing housework around the house.

Maybe, but that's not what the poster I responded to said. They said Michelle did not have time to change her make up.

This is so pathetic. William and Kate really had EarthShot board members complain to Netflix 😂

If they truly wanted attention to be on the finalists, why weren't they flown in?

I guess if you flop that hard, you have to blame anyone but yourself.

This is what the Boston Globe had to say about the Superbowl event 😂

The audience seemed puzzled. The invite to Friday’s Earthshot Prize ceremony promised a “glittering affair” with performances by Billie Eilish and Annie Lennox. But really what they’d been summoned to was the taping of a TV show starring the Prince and Princess of Wales.

The royal couple, wrapping up a three-day visit to Boston, were on hand to award more than $5 million to people with ideas to save the planet, or at least delay its immolation. And as the cameras rolled, the crowd was there to cheer on demand. Enthusiastically.

Taking photos with friends on the appropriately green carpet, Jasmine Rigueur, a member of the Student Government Association at Bunker Hill Community College, said she doesn’t know why she was invited, but she accepted immediately.
“Honestly, I’m here to see Billie Eilish,” Rigueur said, unaware then that Eilish would only be appearing on a screen. “It’s just a plus to have the prince and princess here, too.”

Boston Fire Commissioner Paul Burke was in uniform, but he said he wasn’t working. As a member of Mayor Michelle Wu’s cabinet, he’d been invited to attend and was excited to see Lennox perform.

“That’s who I’m looking forward to, not the royalty,” he said. “My wife’s killing me because I didn’t get a second ticket.”

Or maybe not. As the crowd walked out of MGM Music Hall, a phalanx of enormous SUVs were idling on Lansdowne Street, emitting who-knows-how-much CO2 while they waited to whisk the royal couple away.

There are several things wrong in your post that I feel I should correct. I think that you may understand, maybe. I am not a staunch defender of anybody. What I will do is highlight what I think are unfair attacks against people, while glorifying others who we really know naff all about. It is all smoke and mirrors, all of it. Why would I criticise Meghan for wearing jewellery with an iffy history. Is she the only one to have done so. I have said several times now. Do you have anything to say about the rest of the Royal family's rock collection, or is it only Meghan's earrings that you seem to have an issue with? Maybe it is time to drop that bone.

Ohnonevermind · 04/12/2022 11:44

@LadyKenya

Khashoggi’s death was brutal and horrific.
It was unfortunate that Meghan wore the earrings a number of times especially after she knew their provenance.

Kate was criticised for wearing bought earrings. Which is better ?

Times have changed and I do think some of the Royal jewels and treasures (in the British museum) should be returned and or the countries involved should be compensated. I think this is a growing movement as more people think the same.

But I think it’s a wider debate than just the royal jewels. The Rosetta Stone and Eglin Marbles don’t belong in British museums either. The Pergamon should be returned too.

The returners should pay to build suitable museums are more than welcome to make copies before shipping

I see the Federal authorities in the US took items out of the Metropolitan museum. I’m not sure if that’s quite the right approach either.

Some countries may rather compensation so it’s not a simple one size fits all answer.

but I’m not British (and we’ve very little of note in Irish museums that anyone would want back)

that's a very carefully edited excerpt from a Globe piece (which I read as the Globe is my local newspaper). Maybe better to link to the entire article.

Polite applause is not what Tom Kelly wanted.
The stand-up comedian, whose day job is warming up audiences on TV shows like “The $100,000 Pyramid” and “America’s Got Talent,” needed the crowd at MGM Music Hall to make some noise.
“You’re not just at an episode of ‘The View,’ people!” Kelly hollered into a microphone. “This is the real deal. We’re saving the world!”
The audience seemed puzzled. The invite to Friday’s Earthshot Prize ceremony promised a “glittering affair” with performances by Billie Eilish and Annie Lennox. But really what they’d been summoned to was the taping of a TV show starring the Prince and Princess of Wales.

“I need all you guys moving, even you rich people down here,” Kelly barked at the black ties and ball gowns seated in front, a clutch that included Governor Charlie Baker and wife, Lauren, Utah Senator Mitt Romney and wife, Ann, and former secretary of state and current presidential envoy for climate John Kerry and his daughter Vanessa.
Despite the scripting, the 90-minute ceremony, which will air on the BBC and PBS in the coming days, managed to entertain.
Eilish wasn’t there — her performance of “My Future” was recorded off-site — but Lennox, accompanying herself on piano, delivered a mesmerizing version of “Here Comes the Rain Again” and sister act Chloe x Halle excited the crowd with their performance of “Feeling Good.”
Predictably at an event described by the evening’s co-host, actor Daniel Dae Kim, as “the Oscars of the earth,” there was a lot of reuse-and-recycle talk. Kim said guests had been asked to “embrace pre-loved outfits” — translation: don’t wear something new — and the princess, at least, obliged, wearing a rented, green gown with an emerald choker necklace that belonged to her husband’s late mother, Princess Diana.
Likewise, Kim’s sidekick, BBC Radio personality Clara Amfo, said all the bushes and small trees brought in to make the stage look like a secret garden would be planted in communities and at schools around Boston, not landfilled.
It wasn’t only bigshots who scored a ticket to Friday’s finale.

Outside the venue, there were plenty of people who were interested in glimpsing William and Kate, and who can blame them? It’d been a while since a member of the royal family got the royal treatment in Boston. Forty-six years, in fact, and a lot has changed since then: Buzzy’s Roast Beef was considered fine dining when Queen Elizabeth II visited in 1976, delivering a speech at the Old State House.

By evening’s end, there was so much goodwill in the room that it seemed possible Prince William would seize on the positive vibe and ask for the country back — to let bygones be bygones and make America part of the British Empire again. It didn’t happen. Instead, the Prince of Wales, who has a streak of his father’s fuddy-duddiness, intoned solemnly about the fate of the earth.
“The decisions we make now will affect generations to come,” he said. “Which is why we must choose the path of hope, optimism, and urgency to repair our planet.”
It’s a tall order, but doable, said Caroline Kennedy, whose late father, President John F. Kennedy, inspired the prince’s Earthshot initiative with his famous 1962 “moonshot speech,” which rallied public support for landing a man on the moon by the end of the decade.
“Governments around the world and people around the world are demanding progress on this fight,” Kennedy said, standing in the lobby at the end of the night. “I think we’ll be able to look back in 60 years and say that we saved our planet.”

very different in overall tone than the edited version posted here.

I have no skin in this game. Not a royalist. Don't care much about any of them. Have no idea why the brits and MN are so Team Meghan/ Team Kate about a family so wholely unconnected to them.

But I live in Boston, read the local papers, listen to the local news and the way this - fairly minor fluff to Bostonians - story has been misrepresented on this site is fascinating. why would you care enough?

Obviously the Waleses are much more interested on impact on British public so they are just interested to work so that the British think the Americans care.
The Americans don't care. Don't care about the other pair living in Montecito shire either. They should change their titles to Duke of Montecito or something, after all these titles don't mean anything (other than King/Queen and Prince of Wales which have some place in the British constitutional system).
I still in awe the Crown is able to bestow titles using county names with no consequence al all. Why would they own any titles like Duke or [insert county name here]. Medieval concept it is.

We care because we're funding them to trot the globe in style while wagging their disapproving fingers at the plebs taking their annual two weeks in Benidorm.

I can certainly see why you would care about that. I wouldn't want a royal family myself.

But caring about Team Meghan/Kate - all that pallaver and obsession with them. I don't understand that.

The overall tone of the article (especially when seen against the overall coverage of the Globe on this minor news story) was very different to me. Left out anything positive. Again, don't particularly care but wondered why someone would cut and paste out of an article ... for what? Surely there are easier ways to say "enough with the monarchy stuff"

Still it is your circus, not mine.
