The royal family

Is anyone else thinking the optics are off: royals in a golden coach whilst the UK is in a cost of living crisis?

People are struggling to heat their homes, feed their kids and pay their mortgages but the royals are in the Mall in a golden carriage and giving state banquets.

Can't we just get rid of the lot of them?

@Roussette

You sound jealous. It’s their money — they can spend it as they like. You don’t have to like it or dislike it

Assume that was directed at the OP? 😂

Last time I checked, the Irish hasn’t had eight MPs killed, two representatives of its head of state shot at and one of their family members killed. The security concerns are not comparable.

Irrelevant argument- as it must be as any fool can see that a president will be substantially cheaper than the 350 million this useless lot cost us. You can even discount the milllons needed to pay off the royal sex offender's victim .
It will be interesting to see what else the royals are costing but - as usual- it's all smoke and mirrors .

The MPs aren't going anywhere and what are you doing trying to roll them into a royals argument?

Novella4 · 24/11/2022 07:40

Oh and is the family member you are referring to MOUNTBATTEN??

My heart bleeds .
He was told repeatedly not to keep going to his castle in Ireland yet he ignored that and insisted ...

@SomePosters .. and who do you think would do their jobs instead. Who would you prefer to represent our country & where would you like them to host visiting dignitaries??

& how much international interest do you think there would be?

Tourism would massively drop.

The most visited tourist attraction in Europe is Versailles.

I don't think we need to get rid of the royals but we need to stop funding them. They have more than enough money.

As fort the comparison with footballers, yes footballers at the top earn a lot, but that is only for a few years and is a tiny fraction of the money the royals get.

Novella4 · 24/11/2022 07:59

Good compromise

Just defund them

They can still play dress up .
Will they still turn up though? Duty is everything for them isn't it ?

smilesy · 24/11/2022 08:01

Google says today that it’s the Eiffel Tower 🤷‍♀️

Fair enough, but still somewhere in a republic.

Well yes, France is the most visited country in the world according to some sources, but I’m not sure that has anything to do with it being a republic or not. People would still want to visit Paris more than London if France was still a monarchy’s. More to do with the architecture in Paris and the varied climate to be found in one country. I thought you were comparing Versailles with one of the British Palaces. I think the tourist figures are all a bit of a red herring. I’m sure the Royal Family do entice some people to visit the UK, but sight seeing isn’t the only reason people travel.

What about the other people who died that day? Does your heart bleed for them.

Do you often blame the victim.

Kennykenkencat · 24/11/2022 09:45

I visit France every time I go to Spain or Portugal or Italy

I drive through it and try not to stop.
At least when you get to Spain it’s at least open past 8pm

CathyorClaire · 24/11/2022 09:47

That's because they're not that tricky to prove.

Go on then.

Novella4 · 24/11/2022 09:48

@Kennykenkencat
Way to miss the point.

What about the millions killed by the kings forces if you want to go down that route .

The poster was talking about the monarchy .

Novella4 · 24/11/2022 09:49

And btw @Kennykenkencat since you bring up victims and Mountbatten - are you blaming his victims too ?

Serenster · 24/11/2022 09:51

Irrelevant argument- as it must be as any fool can see that a president will be substantially cheaper than the 350 million this useless lot cost us.

There’s no need for you to post so aggressively, you know Novella. It’s not an irrelevant argument at all. As I’m sure you know, there are various posters who argue fervently that Harry needs his protection to be paid for by taxpayers because of the high level of threat to him in the UK. This, plus our terrible record of people in public office being targeted and killed because of their roles means that any Head of State, and their family will need to be protected while they are in office, and afterwards also. So on the basis that you have a rotating head of state, the number of people needing protection will stay about the same as it is now (if not more, if it’s say Boris Johnson and his indeterminate number fo children!).

Are the teenagers and other adults killed on Mountbatten’s boat also scorned by you? Security for the people in public also also aims to reduce collateral impacts like that, you know.

I am not blaming or scorning the vIctinus of the IRA bombing but you seemed to say you were. In fact you seemed to infer if someone was warned about something and told they shouldn’t do something then the worse happens then it was the persons fault for not heeding the warning.

Do you think if a woman had been warned not to wear a low cut dress or a short skirt when she goes out and then she gets raped that it is her fault or is this victim blaming only targeted at a person who through no fault of their own was born into a particular family.
That is discrimination.

No worries @Samcro

I'm used to Susan and other posters similar!
We know!

Novella4 · 24/11/2022 10:11

@Kennykenkencat

I'm assuming from your post that you are unaware of the allegations against Mountbatten

Novella4 · 24/11/2022 10:12

Mind you plenty of royalists defend Andrew so you wouldn't be the first

Kennykenkencat · 24/11/2022 10:14

Irrelevant argument- as it must be as any fool can see that a president will be substantially cheaper than the 350 million this useless lot cost us

Are you sure about that? It isn’t just the current President and the families that need protecting and for travel costs alone the figure is something around $60 million without adding in all the normal days to day security.

That is for every living president from Jimmy Carter to George Bush senior and junior and Donald Trump. They all need protection.
It might not be £350 million but I wouldn’t be surprised if it was not far off that

00100001 · 24/11/2022 10:19

wincarwoo · 24/11/2022 07:09

@00100001 actually it's the opposite.

Prove it...

smilesy · 24/11/2022 10:25

Novella your posts directed at Kenny are unpleasant and aggressive. Whatever the allegations against Mountbatten, you are ignoring the fact that other people died with him, one of whom was 15 years old. It is not up to you to suggest that Mountbatten’s death was in some way “justice”.

Novella4 · 24/11/2022 10:34

Can @Kennykenkencat not speak for herself ?

Does she know of the allegations or not? Clearly not from what she has written

'My heart bleeds' was directed at Mountbatten . That was clear

Re the warnings I referred to and that fact that he returned again and again to the castle , I was being deliberately oblique .

smilesy · 24/11/2022 11:19

I’m sure Kenny can speak for herself, but I am allowed to observe that you are being aggressive. It doesn’t matter that you feel you were being clear about only referring to Mountbatten, the fact remains that others died with him and anyway, you are not judge and jury. And before you start saying I am defending anyone, that is irrelevant. Saying someone is somehow responsible for or in some way deserves to be violently murdered, whoever they are, is pretty low.

MaulPerton · 24/11/2022 11:35

Well yes, France is the most visited country in the world according to some sources

Would that be French sources by any chance...?
