The royal family

Is anyone else thinking the optics are off: royals in a golden coach whilst the UK is in a cost of living crisis?

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11456933/Prince-Princess-Wales-greet-South-African-president.html

People are struggling to heat their homes, feed their kids and pay their mortgages but the royals are in the Mall in a golden carriage and giving state banquets.

Can't we just get rid of the lot of them?

As usual posters trying to deflect with the H&M whatever. The last time I checked, we are not paying for them.

@Roussette
It's all out of sync with what's happening in this country and the world. I feel uncomfortable with it

You must feel terribly disappointed in Harry and Meghan's decision to live in such an ostentatious house (14 bathrooms?) whilst preaching on environmental issues and equality

Was the 14-bathroom house in attendance at this state occasion? Which tiara did it wear?

Novella4 · 23/11/2022 09:55

And please !

The green washing of William and Charles is offensive .

How many palaces and helicopter rides ??

smilesy · 23/11/2022 10:19

There was onepost that mentioned the Sussexes, which was in response to Rousette, who is known to be a fan of theirs, and suddenly lots of shouty posters pop up to defend the Sussexes 🙄. Anyway, they are relevant to a discussion about the institution of Royalty, regardless of whether we pay for them or not. They are still using their titles. If we get rid of the Royals, those titles would have to go too 🤷‍♀️

LadyKenya · 23/11/2022 10:28

Shouty posters! Give over with the hyperbole.

But they’re not relevant to a discussion about a particular event at which they weren’t in attendance. Nor is their house. Also not relevant: footballers, which gilded coach it actually is, the fact it’s not real solid gold Hmm, your mum.

Previous posters have already widened the discussion to include other things besides the one event and have suggested that the monarchy should be abolished. All members of the Royal family are included in this, surely?

Samcro · 23/11/2022 10:51

shoehorning a H&M bash in to a thread about something they didn't even attend , normally called derailing.

iT’s a StAtE oCcAsIoN. Yeah, and? Perhaps we could have a state occasion without gold coaches and royal families – not just in a cost-of-living crisis but all the time, you know?

But if there was no gold coach ie no ceremony, no glitz, who would be interested? If The foreign ‘dignitaries’🤭had to go in a taxi, would they enjoy it?

why do you think all the awards ceremonies are full of women in ball gowns? Not just a pair of jeans and a sweatshirt.

Republics seem to manage state occasions without gilded coaches and royal families. Some pomp, sure, but cars rather than coaches. There’s no need whatsoever for a royal family.

As I said, it was one solitary fairly oblique post that was in reply to Rousette. No shoehorning imo. And they are relevant to any discussion about removing the Royal family as they are part of it. Just saying 🤷‍♀️

I like the royal family & the golden coaches, so there.

MsPinkMarshmallow · 23/11/2022 11:06

Oh lots of people think it's fine, interesting.

My point wasn't about the cost of the actual coach and I didn't think for a minute that it was made of solid gold, my points were:

Why do we still have a monarchy, given that it's anachronistic and inappropriate in the 21st century?

Although Brits do pomp and ceremony well, it doesn't mean we all have to like it or approve of it or agree with public money being spent on it

If we abolished the monarchy tomorrow we'd still get tourism as a result of opening palaces, our history, people don't come to the UK to SEE the royals since that's rarely possible

I guess I think it's obscene and inappropriate in the current climate

Others may disagree, I don't care! It's fine if you disagree with me.

The royal family should continue to open hospital wards and support local charities.

Studies have shown royal patronage has no effect on charitable income which just leaves the ribbon cutting and holidays

LadyKenya · 23/11/2022 11:16

Yanbu Op.

RosesAndHellebores · 23/11/2022 11:16

And the man who polishes the gold coach, the grooms who look after the horses? Should we abolish them and shoot the horses. Make a couple of families homeless from the Royal Mews in time for Christmas?

I'd rather the Royals than a US presidential system. They bring in plenty of money, have little or no privacy along with their privilege. If we are going to have them, I'll take them with the bling to liven things up a bit.

I suppose I could sack my cleaner and gardener and not have the Christmas trees delivered, lest the poor them all coming in. I'm sure they'd be really grateful to lose some of their livelihood too. It would take a little while to allocate them to the factories to run up the Mao style suits for us all.

So go out and spend more money the country doesn’t have to go around in a lesser vehicle which shows how poor we are as a country which would mean we look desperate and any deals we do we come out worse because we look like we are on our uppers.

What would you have liked to be in its place and how much would that have cost us

CathyorClaire · 23/11/2022 11:22

They bring in plenty of money

Can you provide hard figures for this?

have little or no privacy along with their privilege.

And yet so very few ever walk away from their 'gilded cage'.

username8888 · 23/11/2022 11:22

It's been a state coach for many years, long before COL issues. The RF and the government are showing respect to a head of state and oiling the wheels of commerce and diplomacy. Non issue.

@ChristmasCwtch

"Today I’m ordering a desk and a lamp for a local boy whose family doesn’t have any table or flat surface for him to do his homework and schooling and education is absolutely a path out of poverty!! So I’m feeling particularly tetchy about the tiaras, coaches and soldiers on horseback"

I meant to say earlier . Well done and I wish more people were like you

Why do we need to spend more money on a lesser vehicle? I think the UK has some cars to hand. Some of them quite shiny and new. You make it sound as though those of us who’d prefer to abolish the royal family would like state occasion transport to be cobbled together with a milk float, go-kart and the Only Fools and Horses three-wheeler, rattling a tin for change.

Kennykenkencat · 23/11/2022 11:29

stuntbubbles · 22/11/2022 17:37

Because homeschooling when you don’t have a job and you do have mountains of space at home, money, and resources, is not the same as the millions of people who homeschooled while working FT and living in tiny houses or flats without outdoor space.

Homeschooling is as easy or as hard as the child or you are trying to teach makes it. It has nothing to do with space or money

I don’t think a shiny and new car would suffice. Someone would have been on about petrol prices and wasting money.

It does come across that you expected a milk float instead of the gold carriage.

Branleuse · 23/11/2022 11:35

Theres always another once in a lifetime excuse for these ostentatious displays of pomp and ceremony costing god knows how much. A jubilee, another anniversary, a wedding, a birth, a funeral. Constant massive displays of wealth.

International relations? It matters to noone else except the elites involved.
Cant really understand why on earth anyone defends it.
