Prince Harry's Memoir: A World Publishing Phenomenon

There will likely be several bashing threads on Harry's memoir before it is published, but I am interested in discussing with anyone who is interested in the very interesting marketing choices of the publishers and their approach.

English language editions of SPARE will be published on 10 January 2023 in EIGHT territories: the US, the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, India, South Africa and Canada.

The book will also be published in translation in 15 additional languages:

SPANISH Plaza & Janés/Penguin Random House Grupo Editorial
GERMAN Penguin Verlag/Penguin Random House Verlagsgruppe GmbH, PORTUGUESE BRAZIL Objetiva/Grupo Companhia das Letras
PORTUGUESE PORTUGAL Objectiva/Penguin Random House Grupo Editorial, SIMPLIFIED CHINESE Penguin Random House China
DANISH Politikens Forlag
DUTCH Hollands Diep, an imprint of Overamstel
FINNISH Otava Publishing Company Ltd
FRENCH Éditions Fayard
GREEK Pedio Books
HUNGARIAN Corvina Kiadó
ITALIAN Mondadori,
POLISH Wydawnictwo Marginesy,
ROMANIAN Nemira Publishing House,
SWEDISH Albert Bonniers Förlag.

This is absolutely sensational as it means it will be simultaneously published in 23 territories on the same day.

There are not many books where simultaneous release occurs in different markets. From this, I would say that the book will more than earn its advance, just from the foreign sales alone.

They also chose a banger of a title as it puts focus on the troubling notion of the Spare in a system based on primogeniture, and one that imbues both intrinsic and extrinsic value based on a person's birth order.

Imagine growing up knowing that no matter how loved you may be, your constitutional role is ultimately to be the spare to the heir.

Can't wait to read it!

I don't even mind about proof but what even makes you think he is ND or has learning disabilities @Croque? I'm baffled.

God all mighty. So now Harry is considered to have learning difficulties because he ‘only’ got two A levels🙄

some posters here need to kick their own backsides.

RosettaStormer · 12/11/2022 08:50

I think there are an awful lot of people with ‘learning difficulties’ in the country if the measure of that is two A Levels!

Blip · 12/11/2022 09:05

All the awards have opened my eyes that most people who win awards are probably undeserving, not just M&H.

ajandjjmum · 12/11/2022 09:14

It's also worth checking the credentials of the organisations that are making the awards.

Xenia · 12/11/2022 09:53

I don't know anything about their awards. I try to stick to facts. I have nothing against them as a couple. I have been astounded that people with such assistance with PR would not check what they will say as to the facts first (eg tht they married 3 days before the royal wedding and obvious things like that). If they can say less, be quiet, not show off, get proper jobs and let both grandfathers regularly see the children I would feel happier towards them.

Croque · 12/11/2022 10:52

The whole business of philanthropy is a cesspit inhabited by phonies and try-hards (it comes naturally to some!). The awards they invent and distribute are reflect their need for mutual back scratching.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 12/11/2022 11:06

TBF there are some very honourable people involved too, Croque - but yes, I agree it can attract those who are in it for less pleasant motives

I've often found that the noisier they are, the less likely it is that their real interests lie with others rather than themselves

Croque · 12/11/2022 11:30

@Puzzledandpissedoff My understanding is that most charitable work happens through freemasonic lodges who are very low key and rarely talk about money openly.

antelopevalley · 12/11/2022 13:48

Freemason lodges are not at all low key. They openly boast about the small amount of charitable work they do.

My father donates huge amounts but he never really goes into it because he would be told off.
My OH also provides professional services to people who would struggle to afford it. They could never afford his fees in particular and would struggle with what is available down the high street (even if they could afford it). It is not really quantifiable.
I agree that the American lodges are more boastful with glossy brochures and shoots.

Let me see. Prince Harry is a blood Prince, nothing he can do about that. Over 70 books written about him in his lifetime, he is well within his rights to write about HIS OWN LIFE. I can't imagine anyone begrudging him that. I don't see Duke of Sussex anywhere on that book title.

They complained about the RF's lack of support and media ugliness. What does that have to do with what they are doing now? which is living their lives and taking on commercial work to afford their security. I'm happy for them.

Edward's kids are 'blood prince/ss' as well, but don't use the title.

Harry was Leiutenant/Captain Wales in the army.

The Duchess of Kent taught music in a state school for years as 'Mrs Kent'.

He could choose to refer to himself as Mr Harry Windsor (or Mountbatten-Windsor), and ask others to do so as well. Even if other people don't follow his request (and there is little he can do about that, I agree), he could publish books, press releases, issue podcasts under that name. He is choosing to continue to use a name/title from an institution he insists is toxic and abusive. Which is rather inconsistent.

Roussette · 12/11/2022 19:28

If he changed to use the name Harry Windsor or Mountbatten-Windsor there would STILL be an outcry on here he was using a name connected to the RF.
Guaranteed.

hoooops · 12/11/2022 20:15

Well no, people are objecting to his use of titles and those are surnames.

They would go up in my estimation if they dropped they’d titles and of course H should use his family name !
I think many people would agree.

Readinginthesun · 12/11/2022 20:19

Their *

Sigma33 · 12/11/2022 20:23

Or they could be post-patriarchal and decide to be Markle. Or Ragland?

Sigma33 · 12/11/2022 20:25

Plenty of options if they want to reject the royal connection

Sigma33 · 12/11/2022 20:27

It would send the message that the weird bowing down and special treatment was ridiculous, and he doesn't want to benefit from it.

Unless, of course, he does want to benefit, but also complain about the disadvantages?

Sigma33 · 12/11/2022 20:48

Authenticity. Be true to yourself

Walk the walk as well as talk the talk.

Why should MM have to take her husband's surname, let alone his titles?

Unless for some reason you want the title and surname?

Roussette · 12/11/2022 21:03

We shall see then, if it ever happens.

I'll bookmark my post and bring it back up when posters are furious he's using ' Windsor'

The chances of H and M voluntarily dropped their titles are zilch .

He had everything poured into his education though, went to the best school in the world, would of had the best tutors money can buy yet could only do very poorly at two A levels. He’s very unintelligent, well below average. It’s not like he went to a crappy state school and got average results.

Croque · 12/11/2022 21:07

Harry Saxe-Coburg-Gotha doesn't sound snappy enough.

Not snappy enough for anyone in the RF. .

So?
Not everyone is academic, or have high IQs.
I find it depressing to criticise someone like this, anyone. He's been called every imaginable term under the sun to depict 'thick'.
