The next series will be starting on the 9th of November. Imelda Staunton will be playing the Queen. Tobias Menzies is playing Philip.

Historical events we’re likely to see in season 5 of The Crown:
Prince Andrew’s divorce
Princess Anne’s divorce
Windsor Castle fire
The separation/divorce of Prince Charles and Lady Diana
The Queen sues The Sun newspaper
The death of Princess Diana
Tony Blair becomes Prime Minister

Who will be watching it?

@IcedPurple some of the details of major events have been changed. None of them has had no basis in truth at all.
So a reporter did do a love piece about Philips's mother, their meeting was not engineered.

The problem is, though, that whilst a meeting did take place between Major and Charles or the Queen, no one knows what was said there. The conversation is completely invented. Can you not see that this will totally change how the meeting or major event is portrayed?

antelopevalley · 17/10/2022 12:20

At the time this is supposed to have happened, Charles was very outspoken and seemed to pretty much ignore protocol.

I think Charles was very aware that as P of W he had far greater freedom to express what he thought, than he would ever have as Monarch. He wouldn't have given that up lightly.

I question the intelligence of people who truly believe this conversation ever took place.

PP has posted the full statement from John Major on page 5 of this thread. He (Major) totally refutes the portrayal of what happened. So it doesn’t matter if Charles was outspoken or ignored protocol. It didn’t happen.

Apparently, Charles said in one of the Dimbleby interviews he wanted his mother to retire or abdicate.

You will need to post a link for that . I am old enough to have lived through the engagement/ wedding/ divorce etc but have absolutely no recollection of Charles ever saying that .

PoundShopPrincess · 17/10/2022 13:37

Well, I'm sure if Charles spoke to Major and somehow told Dimbleby about it, you'll be able to provide a link to those interviews @antelopevalley
Because, funnily enough, no-one involved in The Crown has claimed what you're claiming. You're batting harder for this than The Crown writers are. Peter Morgan has admitted in many interviews that he just imagines scenarios/ letters/ events/ correspondence.
As for a PP who asked about Harry, they will be covering the period where Harry had some of his PR scandals including dressing as a Nazi, etc. Netflix 'sources' have said Harry's Netflix contract doesn't mean he has any impact on how he's shown in The Crown and they're not even giving him early press screeners.

What has that got to do with him talking to John Major? I’m not familiar with the Dimbleby interview but that is in the public domain. Nothing like a private conversation that has been invented for entertainment purposes.

smilesy · 17/10/2022 13:42

Meant to add, please link to the Dimbleby interview.

antelopevalley · 17/10/2022 13:45

There were two interviews with Dimbleby.

Okayyy. So which one are we talking about? Give us a clue please

John Major has said the 'conversation' between him and Charles did not happen. At all.

Again, do you think it's ethically OK to invent, or wildly distort, events in the lives of real, living people, purely for entertainment purposes? Without even adding a disclaimer that this is a drama, not a documentary?

What do you mean 'apparently'?

These interviews are on public record. Could you link to the part where Charles said this please?

Another piece of gossip quoted as fact. I have never seen this, nor seen any reference to it. You're making up your own stories here - for a change!

Puzzledandpissedoff · 17/10/2022 14:05

There is almost 2000 words detailing historical inaccuracies in the first four seasons of The Crown on wikipedia if anyone is so inclined

I've seen it, and it just confirmed that often they can't even get basic facts right

In a drama that's not necessarily expected, but no doubt we'll be told again that it's "pretty factual", which seems to add up to believing whatever nonsense someone chooses to

ajandjjmum · 17/10/2022 14:10

And then you'll get idiots quoting 'I know it's right, because I saw it on The Crown'.!!

antelopevalley · 17/10/2022 14:10

@Puzzledandpissedoff things I have read like that detail irrelevant stuff e.g, that event did not happen at that palace but at another.

Apparently, doing a lot of heavy lifting on this thread and the other one !

antelopevalley · 17/10/2022 14:12

I say apparently as it is what I read. I can't find the two whole interviews. One was two and a half hours long. Did the Royal Family get it removed? Or can anyone find it?

You 'read' it eh?

Where?

Instead of backpeddling furiously, maybe just admit you were wrong.

antelopevalley · 17/10/2022 14:23

I do not lie. I read it. I am asking for help to find the Dimbleby interviews in full so I can watch them and confirm if this is the case.

Again, where did you read it?

Obviously a source you consider trustworthy about royal matters, so I'd be interested to know what it is.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 17/10/2022 14:24

IcedPurple I'd lay decent money it was on Twitter or some similar internet sewer ...

jeffgoldblum · 17/10/2022 14:25

Right I have googled extensively in the name of fair research!
Prince Charles did one interview/ film with Johnathan dimbleby , 1994 , which mentions the affair and Diana, nothing about wanting the queen to retire or abdicate and dimbleby also wrote a biography about Charles, also no mention I can find of wanting the queen to abdicate!
Are you not confusing Charles with this new so called rumour of Andrew wanting to be king? ( this is also probably tabloid crap!)

jeffgoldblum · 17/10/2022 14:27

I could fanny about with links , but why bother? It's easy enough to type " prince Charles interview with Johnathan dimbleby"
