The next series will be starting on the 9th of November. Imelda Staunton will be playing the Queen. Tobias Menzies is playing Philip.

Historical events we’re likely to see in season 5 of The Crown:

Who will be watching it?

shouldn't this be in the tv topic? it is fiction.

justloveandlightx · 10/10/2022 15:32

Me!! Can't wait for the new season!!

jeffgoldblum · 10/10/2022 15:32

@Samcro 👏

antelopevalley · 10/10/2022 15:36

@Samcro Nice one! Grin
Except its not! It is a drama of historical events.
Netflix refused the Royal Families' request for a pre-warning that it was drama and not historical events. It is based on real historical events. Just the Royal Family do not like us to be reminded of all of them.

@antelopevalley

you should get this moved to the TV addicts section.

I can't wait either! I bloody love the Crown.

Samcro · 10/10/2022 15:44

ahh so its really short? as no one will know all the content of conversations.

antelopevalley · 10/10/2022 15:48

@Samcro Do you know what the words above - drama based on historical events means?

OP posts:
Samcro · 10/10/2022 15:48

yep its made up.

antelopevalley · 10/10/2022 15:49

Just like dramas based on say Hillsborough disaster. Dramas based on historical events are not a new concept.

antelopevalley · 10/10/2022 15:50

@sam You are wrong. The exact conversations are made up. The historical events happened. So they are covering Andre's divorce. He did get divorced and Sarah did get a very small divorce settlement, she was screwed over. Those are facts.

It is very much fiction, albeit based on real people and real events. I have enjoyed previous series (tho the Claire Foy ones were the best), but they include numerous errors and scenes/ plots that are known to bear no relation to what actually happened. So enjoy it, but don't take it as a documentary or the truth.

ohidoliketobe · 10/10/2022 15:57

Tobias Menzie was Prince Philip in seasons 3 and 4. Jonathan Pryce will portray him season 5.

antelopevalley · 10/10/2022 15:59

It is pretty factual though. In fact it is kinder than it could have been e.g. Mountbatten.

Should ‘The Tudors’ be moved to the RF or Wolf hall then OP

I enjoy The Crown but it does play with the truth rather too much for my taste. I like e.g. the conversations the Queen has with her PMs because they are not a matter of historical record and I think it's fine to have fun with that. But it annoys me when they make up events that are easily shown to be false, e.g. the nonsense newspaper interview with Philip's mother.

Did 'the Royal family' actually make a formal request of NF to add a 'fiction' warning?

I don't believe they did, but if they did I couldn't blame them. Would you like invented versions of your intimate conversations and relationships to be made into a drama watched by millions?

JaninaDuszejko · 10/10/2022 16:06

And Hilary Mantel was very careful to stick to the historical record of actual events we know about.

I'll watch it but I think the closer it's getting to contemporary times, the tawdrier it seems.

The first two series, with Claire Foy, seemed like more of a historical drama. Obviously a lot was invented or distorted, but not many of us have first hand memories of those times, so it wasn't so obvious. Plus, the sets and costumes were gorgeous. However, many of us remember the Diana days very well, and it just seems like televised tittle tattle rather than a dramatised insight into a changing world, and a young woman coping with the transition from princess to queen.

All that said, I will definitely watch the 5th season! Not sure about Imelda Staunton, but surely she can't be worse than Olivia Colman?

All of the above. Old dears like me remember it too well

wherearebeefandonioncrisps · 10/10/2022 16:19

Sarah might seem to have been screwed over but don't forget that the Queen had to bail her out a couple of times for very large amounts of money if I recall correctly.

I know it’s a typo/autocorrect but I’m giggling at “Andre”.

antelopevalley · 10/10/2022 16:28

@wherearebeefandonioncrisps The Queen decided to do that.
Sarah should still have had a decent divorce settlement. Diana did way better.

The media said the Royal Family had made that request.

Sarah screwed over?
I mean she wasn't forced into the toe sucking drama was she?
Talk about handing infidelity proof to the world!
