Such a shame that Sophie’s visit to the DRC isn’t receiving the coverage it deserves .

I agree, she seems to be a real grafter but we never hear much about what she does

LondonWolf · 04/10/2022 16:27

I'm reading elsewhere that reporting it was purposely held off on so that no bad faith reactions could be printed before she even got there. Princess Anne also on a trip to NYC atm, again on the down low.

Readinginthesun · 04/10/2022 16:30

Such a shame for both both women yet the latest drivel from Meghan is all over Twitter.

I’ve just been reading up about the visit and it’s such a heartbreaking topic, I’m glad she’s engaging with this particular initiative. She seems such a lovely, warm person. I’m also impressed she’s doing a solo visit. Has she done that before? It’s so refreshing to see royals doing work on the down low.

SilverLiningPlaybook · 04/10/2022 17:30

She never seems to get any media coverage yet she does amazing work.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 04/10/2022 17:31

What's DRC?

What's DRC?

Democratic Republic of the Congo.

She does a lot of work internationally against VAWG, FGM and rape as a tool of war, including in countries where these are live issues

Her visit to South Sudan just before the pandemic, where she was supporting similar causes barely had any coverage here either, but I hope it has more impact in the countries concerned

alexdgr8 · 05/10/2022 00:24

she is a good egg.
a grafter not a grifter.
no names no pack drill.

Dustyblue · 05/10/2022 03:23

It seems a few of them do a lot on the down low. Princess Anne was in Australia (where I am) months ago and it was barely reported. Couldn't even tell you what charities she was here to support. She flew commercial and stayed in a mid-range hotel, all very low key.

Autumnisclose · 05/10/2022 03:28

I'm not a Royalist at all but I have to say it was heart warming to see her hug the surgeon who treats the women . She genuinely seems so nice. It's not a cause I knew about, but now do so good job to Sophie.

Coucous · 05/10/2022 09:02

She has definitely come a long way when it comes to her public image given the "Sophie -Tapes" when she disparaged everyone from Charles, Camilla, the queen, the government etc. I am not sure either Kate / Meghan would have survived it if tables were turned.
Well done to her for her work on FGM - I wish she used her platform more on these topics.

SilverLiningPlaybook · 05/10/2022 09:07

I’m wondering why the Press do not accompany Sophie and Anne on these trips. Obviously they must prefer to go quietly, but it then doesn’t raise the profile of the charities concerned.

ChagSameachDoreen · 05/10/2022 09:08

Royals' "work" seems to consist only of visiting impoverished countries that were fucked up by western imperialism.

She does use her platform but she doesn’t receive the news coverage that others do .
I met her through a charity and she is absolutely delightful . Very knowledgeable, interested and interesting .

And this take is why they are keeping so quiet about their doings now. Perhaps take it up with the people actually living and working there, for the organisations the royals visit and who welcome them whole heartedly- as we can see from the photos - rather than pontificating predictable bad takes on SM.

Any if they didn't bother and ignored their historical associations you'd be whinging about that too. It's history, every one for bad shit, no one's hands are clean. Time to move on.

queenofarles · 05/10/2022 10:29

Very impressed by Sophie, I started reading about the Panzi foundation. , the founding Dr is a remarkable human being,
He founded the hospital in 1999 as a clinic for gynecological and obstetric care, and expected to be working on issues of maternal health. Since 1999, however, Dr. Mukwege and his staff have helped to care for more than 50,000 survivors of sexual violence. The hospital not only treats survivors with physical wounds, but also provides legal, and psycho-social services to its patients. Even patients who cannot afford post-rape medical care are treated without charge at Panzi Hospital. Dr. Mukwege has been fearless in his efforts to increase protections for women and to advocate that those responsible for sexual violence be brought to justice, including the Congolese government and militia groups laying siege to eastern DRC.

She doesn't come across delightful to me. But it's good to know how she comes across to others. One has to wonder if she's disingenuous given what she said in the past when she didn't think she was being recorded. I feel like everything else is what they want us to see.

Coucous · 05/10/2022 12:29

LadyKenya · 05/10/2022 10:19

This.

This is true - a lot of colonies and commonwealth members.
I have to say I am more impressed by people like Federer who has built over 80 schools in Malawi - this is one man. With the wealth the RF has I would even be impressed if they were improving our own schools in this country.

LadyKenya · 05/10/2022 12:39

@Coucous . I agree with you. I did not know that about Federer, that is amazing. The Royal family get so much adulation for doing so little, and hoarding their wealth.

She didn't really slag any of the rf off in the tapes though did she? Just politicians. Which is fair enough if she thought she was having a private conversation. I know royals aren't supposed to express strong political views publicly but they are allowed to have views!

Apart from anything else they were over 20 years ago. People change a lot in that time. She's had 2 kids, changed jobs etc. The Queen seemed to have forgiven her so they can't have been that offensive to the rf!

I also don't understand what you mean about the tapes suggesting she's disingenuous? If you're suggesting they show she behaves differently in private than in public then a) thats pretty normal for most people and b) that isn't what disingenuous means...
