Such a shame that Sophie’s visit to the DRC isn’t receiving the coverage it deserves .

Her reputation is only rehabilitated because no one really cares about her.

You are only speaking for yourself - and as we know, you view of any royal is negative.

Personally I found that many people felt a great deal of warmth towards Sophie over the period of HM's death, as her compassion and love for wider family were clear for all to see.

antelopevalley · 31/10/2022 13:12

I am a known Royalist amongst family and friends as I am interested in them. During the funeral most people I know were asking who Sophie and even Edward are. Not a negative view of them at all, most people do not know who they are so do not care what they do.

Really ? Goodness that’s a bit odd . Even my teenage DGC know who they are !

@antelopevalley You a Royalist?!!!

balalake · 31/10/2022 16:17

The two members of the Royal Family who seem to do the most though quietly and with minimal fuss are Princess Anne and Sophie, Countess of Wessex. Anne seems to have the respect for this and perhaps one day Sophie will as well.

@latetothefisting the tapes were pretty awful. She was absolutely dissing senior members of the RF. She also tried to sell access to the (fake) sheik. She screwed up 'Royally' quite a bit when she first got with Eddy. She went low low low key for years.

What did she say about the RF? I’ve forgotten!

She was rude about members of the government and William Hague if I remember correctly. It was hilarious

antelopevalley · 31/10/2022 20:41

"Sophie: 'It's a shame really because William is very intelligent. I think he's got real vision. But he's got this awful kind of way he talks, like that all the time [mimics Hague]. He sounds like a puppet unfortunately. When we used to see John Major he had this real problem of being quite defensive, especially at Prime Minister's question time. Also, in front of a TV camera he came across as completely wooden ... 'I have to say that I blame him, [Major] and a lot of people do, for a number of things, and he used the royal family terribly badly to cover up a lot of things they were doing. The leaks that came from Downing Street were frightening.'"

I looked it up and read those comments but nothing derogatory about the RF

sweetgrapes · 31/10/2022 20:44

What work do they actually do though? I thought the publicity for the charities was the big thing. But if they are going low key then that too isn't there. So what would they actually be doing?

antelopevalley · 31/10/2022 20:45

She said that Charles and Camilla planned to marry once the queen mum died. This was shocking at the time and the palace quickly denied it. Charles had said they would never marry.

This is the truth.
Some people didn’t even know that Edward existed .

Sophie has recently undertaken a trip to Africa, including visits to Botswana, Malawi, Rwanda and DRC. She does a lot of work to prevent sexual violence against women.

Pretty important stuff I think, although there is not the level of coverage in the press that kate or Meghan get for changing the colour of their nail varnish. That is none of their faults, but down to the press, who are only printing what their empty headed readers want to read.

Sophie certainly gets involved in the nitty gritty and not just the fluffy side of royal visits. I thought the photographs of her at the genocide memorial were incredibly moving.

I follow the Royal Family and I did not know they were on a tour. It is why so many do not know who she is. Although the media would report it if they thought readers would be interested,

antelopevalley · 01/11/2022 12:07

I googled. They had a fairly relaxed time. It looks largely like a middle-aged couple on an organised touring holiday with holiday snaps.

Maybe try Googling Sophie’s recent tour of African country ? Highlighting the issue of sexual violence against women.

Sorry I googled Sophie recent Royal Tour and assumed it was her most recent tour.
There is surprisingly little about the African tour. There is this where she met various CEOs and representatives and planted a tree.
It may be worthy in intent, but not sure what it actually achieves if the press are not interested.

Her tour (the first member of the RF to visit the DRC) did get newspaper coverage in the UK and am sure would have garnered domestic coverage in the countries she visited. Part of the rationale for the tour was to hear evidence about how countries are tackling sexual violence in conflict and seeking ways to prevent it in the future.
This will be explored at a global conference on PSVIC hosted by the UK in November which I guess Sophie will speak at?

ajandjjmum · 01/11/2022 13:14

@antelopevalley You need to look more thoroughly. There was no 'middle aged couple of holiday' vibe - she went alone. She took part in a number of different events geared towards her special interests of sexual violence against women and eyesight issues.

She obviously made an impact on the people she met, and at the meetings she took part in.

You're right though - there wasn't a great deal of press coverage (although significantly more than you have evidently seen). But that's not her fault. If the press (and presumably it's readers) don't appreciate the impact of what she's doing, it's not her fault. She makes a difference to the people on the ground, which is significantly more valuable that headlines.

Readinginthesun · 01/11/2022 13:18

I have said it before but will say again that have met Sophie through a charity we are both involved with and I was extremely impressed by her knowledge and genuine interest . I don’t think she receives enough credit for what she is doing to raise awareness about sexual violence against women . Just like I don’t think Camilla receives enough coverage about her work with DV charities.

What was horrible was her manner.
I remember, it was quite jarring I noticed actually.
I remember thinking at the time, why couldn't they send someone who is more at ease with the local community. She most clearly was not.

Megan would have charmed them, no doubt? Tho' she might have wanted to be paid.....

There really is not much coverage so far and what there is does not really explore the issues. That is a real shame.
Her speaking at a conference is good if it beings press coverage for the issues, lets see.

Thanks. I didn't say there was no coverage, but not that much. Normally on here when people claim there is no coverage of something there has been loads of coverage. But even the usual publications that cover everything the Royal Family do have not covered it that much.
It would be nice to have articles about the issues she visited the DCR about, instead they are simply mentioned very briefly in any coverage.
There was more coverage about Meghan eating an avocado, which is ridiculous.
