Queued with the public for 12 hours, and wearing a shirt and tie.

Unlike others who have been ushered in as 'press' or VIPs.

How did people manage to queue for that long without needing a wee?

There are lines of Portaloos along the route!

Graff · 17/09/2022 06:28

Apparently he’d been totally anonymous from 2am until midday and other queue members who knew he was there respected his privacy and didn’t post anything about him being there. I thought that was actually in itself a mark of respect for the occasion from everyone concerned. Then the media noticed him and all of a sudden it developed into ‘Beckhamwatch’ which if he just wanted to pay his respects like everyone else (and Tbf he’d probably met the Queen more than most people) must’ve been a bit frustrating. I’m no Beckham fan but fair play to him for refusing a fast track entry (which in itself is a ludicrous idea that somehow as a non-member of the RF your time is more valuable than say a nurse on her day off).

And ditto Susannah Reid who also queued with her Mum in a similarly unstarry way.

Holly and Phil’s crown does seem to be waning and jumping the queue will not have helped that either..

And you get a wristband so if you nip out of the queue for a few mins you keep your place, the colours get changed every so often.

But he is just a member of the public who used to play football.......

Oh come on, he was England captain for a sport that's loved by a very large proportion of the nation. He is treated differently from members of the public. No-one wants a selfie with Joe Bloggs.

I think there's an element of showing his kids how not to be a dick too.

QuebecBagnet · 17/09/2022 06:39

Rumours on social media is that a security person/employee queued for him overnight and then they swapped places. Which I guess would explain why nobody saw him earlier. 🤷‍♀️

When they spoke to him on the bbc, the people in the queue behind him were agreeing that he'd been there 12 hours, saying they'd had doughnuts with him etc.
I don't see why random members of the public would lie - if I'd been queueing for 12 hours and then a celebrity swapped into the queue after asking a staff member to queue for them, I'd be pretty annoyed and wouldn't agree to a cheerful interview about how they'd been there the whole time.

vroom321 · 17/09/2022 07:24

I'm surprised just due to the security risk. Surely he would have taken someone. Was he not constantly stopped for photos / signatures?

I wouldn't have recognised him. He looks skinny / older / tired.

vroom321 · 17/09/2022 07:27

How can you get your exact spot back if you go to the shop / toilet?

I assumed the vip queue was for safety reasons
no!

I’m sure you’re smart enough not to believe all you read on social media.

I’ve wondered about that as well. Where do you slot back into the queue? Is it where you left it or at the back of the group who are wearing the same band as you?

He's done well for himself hasn't he, the son of a hairdresser and a kitchen fitter, had a natural talent for football and excelled in it.

Married, has 4 lovely children and now enjoys wealth, but still deep down he's that Londoner that will stand for 12 hours in a queue to pay his respect To The Queen.

Exactly this.
Incredibly talented but worked bloody hard too.
We know he's after a knighthood, and why not? Great sportsman and does a great deal for charity.

megletthesecond · 17/09/2022 07:45

He's not Harry Styles. At his age I'm sure he's quite capable of doing things alone when he wants to. And it was dark for the first few hours.

Indeed. And I’m even smart enough not to believe everything I read in the MSM either. 😁

RudsyFarmer · 17/09/2022 07:46

He needs to teach his son some humility. The older kid’s an embarrassment. Good for him for not bypassing the queue and mixing with the peasants.

I know we have reasons to be very cynical these days, but he's been around the media all his adult life and knows what the consequences of pulling a fast one like that would be (and he would be found out) Anyway, people have come forward to say they saw him and he was there all the time.

Sometimes, occasionally things actually are as they seem and a cigar is just a cigar.

ivykaty44 · 17/09/2022 07:49

yet got invited to a royal wedding or two, was offered a queue jump & didn’t

not keen on football or queuing, but can see this for what it is

His son is a married man in his twenties now. I think that ship has sailed.

MyLovelyPen · 17/09/2022 07:51

@avamiah you do know your new king is best mates with the Saudis and always has been?

MyLovelyPen · 17/09/2022 07:55

@user1497787065 now that is an utterly fascinating study in psychology. We shouldn’t venerate a man who achieved a lot in his sporting life through bloody hard work and talent but we should venerate the royals because . . . .

Is this how low the bar is?
Respecting some multi-multi-millionaire because he stood in a queue?
Apparently so have thousands of others - and not all of them have the luxury of knowing that the queuing is the hardest thing they’ll need to do all year.

Absolutely. The bar in this country is set so pathetically low I despair, I really do. The lame ass nonsense that we admire people for. Call me a cynic, (I say ‘realist’) but this is the most obvious PR drive by David Beckham that I’ve ever seen. And there have been some other toe curlingly blatant attempts to compare this to.

Arnaquer · 17/09/2022 07:56

Hats off to him, he had an offer from an MP to queue jump.
I feel sorry for some posters who have to find the negative in everything, must be exhausting for you.

Wartywart · 17/09/2022 08:01

Good on him I say. He probably loved being part of something with real, normal people.
