Kate Middleton

Seen lots of posts in various places saying that referring to Kate Middleton is disrespectful. I don't agree:

She was born a Middleton and that's her name and family history;
She's simply a person like the rest of us and doesn't deserve any more respect than the average person because of who she married or what her job title is;
The Princess of Wales, Duchess of Cornwall, Cambridge or whatever are essentially job titles and not names.

To make it clear I rather like Kate and have no problem with her. I do have a problem with people expecting me to show deference and telling me off like a naughty ten year old who's been disrespectful to the teacher.

Nothing wrong with calling her Kate or Catherine. William calls her Kate.

Thoughts? Comments?

I agree. Nothing wrong with Kate or Kate Middleton. I know people argue that using her maiden name is stupid because she's been married for 10 years, but it's just easier than "The Duchess of Cambridge," isn't it? Meghan is still referred to as Meghan Markle by a lot of people (including me), so I don't see why it should be any different for Kate.

ChiefPearlClutcher · 15/09/2022 14:18

The papers started calling her Kate. I believe at school she was always Catherine.

BillLius · 15/09/2022 14:19

Well, I’m crying for her. She’s only just sewn on 3 sets of nametapes on 3sets of entire school uniforms and the whole lot has to be changed as the kids are now George, Charlotte and Louis Wales.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 15/09/2022 14:20

She is still Catherine Middleton. She doesn't have an actual married surname to use. They use Cambridge day to day in the same way that Harry & William used Wales as kids, and maybe they'll all swap to Wales now. But she doesn't have a legal new surname on marriage to actually use.

Couldn't give a shiny shite how people refer to her tbh.

BillLius · 15/09/2022 14:20

And do you know what? It’s not the sewing, it’s unpicking the bloody things without ripping the shirts ffs.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 15/09/2022 14:21

Maybe they'll just keep the kids as Cambridge for this year at school.

I've heard William call her Kate a few times.

I like KMiddy as it makes her sound like a rapper!

WimpoleHat · 15/09/2022 14:30

I think you should call people what they want to be called - how they introduce or refer to themselves. So - Liz Truss is Ms Truss, Theresa May is Mrs May and Catherine is now the Princess of Wales (as per their Twitter feed).

A friend of mine didn’t change her name on marriage. I respect that and use the name she chooses. Pisses me off no end, though, that she doesn’t use “Mrs DH” when she knows full well that’s my choice. So the whole “Kate Middleton” thing does strike me as a bit reductive.

NCFT0922 · 15/09/2022 14:32

@RaRaRaspoutine she’s KMidz here 😂

LizzieSiddal · 15/09/2022 14:32

I have a name that can be shortened, the only people I like shortening it are my very close family. it irritates me so much when anyone else does it, especially a random person you’ve only just met.

And I bet she went for a bulk order to make it cheaper too, what a waste of 1000 name badges

William frequently refers to her as Kate.

No-one was still referring to Diana as 'Diana Spencer' ten years into her marriage.

Arenanewbie · 15/09/2022 14:43

Are you talking about media or about how we call her in our private conversations?
I think it’s difficult to call her just Kate privately as it’s a very popular name so it might be confusing for many but with using Kate Middleton it’s obvious who you are talking about.

TangleCry · 15/09/2022 14:46

Oh dear, the thread quality is extremely low these days.

Who has told you off op?

They definitely were!

Babymamaroon · 15/09/2022 14:49

Nothing wrong with Kate at all.

It's just crazy to get up in arms about a title.

She's also known by her royal title but her name was and still is Kate - even William had publicly called her that.

Both really. If I talk about her with anyone it's in context and I always say Kate, William, Sophie or whoever. I'd never say "What do you think of the Princess of Wales's dress?" for example.

I think she was often called Lady Di

BuffaloCauliflower · 15/09/2022 15:05

She’s been married over a decade, Middleton isn’t her name anymore. It’s really rude to insist on calling her that. If someone repeatedly called me by my maiden name despite knowing my married name, that I’ve had for several years, I’d think it very rude. Not sure how you’re missing this?

But that's the point, she doesn't have a married name. It's far easier when talking to friends to refer to her as "Kate Middleton" as opposed to "The Duchess of Cambridge and Cornwall" / "The Princess of Wales". And if you just said "Kate" no one would know who you're talking about.

Nah, she'll have known Wales was coming soon.

Pray tell, what is her married name?
