I've put the news on today for the first time since Friday. Had constant twitter / news notifications so heard what's happening.

This morning I've heard people say they saw the queen as a second grandmother. They are as upset as they would be if they lost their mum.

People queuing during their night with their primary age kids.

Just seems a bit mad no?

Completely!

I keep thinking "stockholm syndrome"! People (on here especially) attacking anyone who dares dissent from blind adoration of this completely innocent and altruistic institution.

My mind is boggled.

ShadowoftheFall · 15/09/2022 09:41

Yes

smilesy · 15/09/2022 09:42

No worse than when Diana died. Which was really over the top 🤷‍♀️

AnyFucker · 15/09/2022 09:42

Yes it’s mad

It’s that little girl Olivia’s funeral today and the coverage I have seen so far is a scant 30 sec slot then back to hours of interviewing mad people queuing for 8 hours to see a coffin

Roselilly36 · 15/09/2022 09:44

I agree.

Windowtea · 15/09/2022 09:45

Have you ever seen Evita?

There is a song in that called 'Oh what a circus'. Have a listen to that.

We are facing one of the hardest winters with people in financial dire straits and at risk of starving or freezing to death. Yet all we are talking about is a woman who had the economic and social privilege to allow her to live until 96.

Everyone looked back on that and said how ridiculous it was. Said we shouldn't have got to that point and that we shouldn't repeat it when another Royal dies.

And yet here we are.....

SueSaid · 15/09/2022 09:48

It is obviously sad that she has died but at 96 I'm not quite sure we need everyone on the TV in black and non stop coverage. Imo the coffin should have been moved from Balmoral to Buckingham Palace then there left until the funeral. All the parading the coffin from pillar to post seems so undignified.

Although the optics of processions and bands etc are beautiful and moving

I don't understand why anyone would queue all night to view a coffin it seems odd and verging towards the Diana hysteria effect.

SueSaid · 15/09/2022 09:50

TV presenters need to wear normal clothes and report on other issues.

Just leave it all now until Mon.

ByeByeMr · 15/09/2022 09:54

It's ridiculous. As someone who has lost both my parents I find comments like that quite insulting.

FourTeaFallOut · 15/09/2022 09:55

Meh, I mean, the most hyperbolic statements make good telly. Presumably the more reasonable and forgettable responses are ignored by the TV crews.

The spectacle of grieving is being intentionally managed. They could as easily, in this day and age, allow people to queue digitally but then we wouldn't have the visual performance of grieving to beam across the world. The carefully selected outpourings of dramatic sadness may as well be lines on a script.

The entire thing is a performance - some mourners are playing their parts better than others.

Paranoidandroidmarvin · 15/09/2022 09:57

Each to their own surely. They are allowed to be affected like ur not. I have watched it on and off and will watch the funeral as well. Other won’t.

Ooh yes, good call! Very relevant!!!

I also don't get it and cannot understand why people want to travel and queue and all that stuff. But if people want to do it, it's up to them.

We will watch the funeral from home, and have followed the accession and all of the movement and parades (not sure that's the right term, but YKWIM), as they're interesting and an historical moment, but I won't be travelling to London.

Featuredcreature · 15/09/2022 10:01

I'm just glad you didn't put loosing. Grin

I agree though.

Featuredcreature · 15/09/2022 10:03

I imagine I will probably be slightly hungover Monday, will probably watch with a bacon sandwich. Well depends how long it will go on.

ethelredonagoodday · 15/09/2022 10:05

And also agree that whilst it's sad that the Queen has died, she was 96 years old, a good age by any measure. My own grandad is the same age and when he dies, I'll be very sad, but also very grateful for a long life.

Everyone dies eventually and 96 years is not a bad run!

Totally agree.

People leaving flowers and random marmalade sandwiches that will all rot away to nothing and meanwhile thousands of families are reliant on food banks just to eat.

Norugratsatall · 15/09/2022 10:09

I was packing to go away last Thursday when the news first came through. Been abroad for six days. Arrived back last night, turned on the news this morning and the coverage is exactly the same as it was last Thursday! God knows what it's been like for the last week. It's been rather nice to avoid it all if I'm honest. Hoping it will all calm down after Monday's funeral. Yes it's mad... she was 96. The real tragedy, as another poster said, is little Olivia's funeral today, barely had a mention.

BorgQueen · 15/09/2022 10:10

SiL is currently badgering DH to go to London today, she seems to think people aren’t staying in the queue overnight 🙄 The line is back to Tower bridge now, it was an 8 hour wait from the Eye at midnight last night. It’s mental.

Andromachehadabadday · 15/09/2022 10:12

Not sure what channel I had on this morning But they did a fairly long segment on Olivia and her Funeral. They visited her school which is also marking the day with their pupils.

Other news is going on, but you have to search for it.

Not sure if I am more immune to it, but I remember the reaction, public grief and news being far worse when Diana died. And we had less channels so less chance to switch off.

what seems 'mad' to me is starting yet another thread about how mad/ridiculous/'insult of choice' the people/nation/mourners/'insert insult if choice' are.

you could just maintain a dignified silence, in the aftermath of OUR QUEEN , a well respected world leader, dying.

People grieving is FAR more understandable than there disrespectful threads.

Or equally you could just scroll past and not reply…? People are allowed to have a different view. Even if the media doesn’t represent that.

Carrotzen · 15/09/2022 10:19

I think queuing for more than an hour is absolutely insanity

I don't feel sad she died. I didn't know her, she lived to a good age. Theres nothing sad about that for me. She was not my second grandmother in anyway shape or form, if I had died she would not have given 2 fucks and I think that's quite insulting to both my grandma and her.

The news coverage is incessant. I get it's a big change for the country, she's been queen a long time. It is absolutely sad for her family, but I find performative grief for a woman you don't know quite distasteful.

FourTeaFallOut · 15/09/2022 10:20

Now come on, it is ridiculous. Nobody is speaking ill of the queen here but there's nothing dignified about the displays of over-egged grieving picked out for general consumption on our screens. A bit of stiff upper lip wouldn't go amiss.

Andromachehadabadday · 15/09/2022 10:22

I wouldn’t queue for hours.

But it clearly means a lot to the people who are. And it’s their choice.

I don’t see that people HAVE to involved. But I don’t see the need to insult people who are choosing to either.
