Can I ask a question about Diana please?

If Diana was alive now and divorced from Charles, I just wonder what effect it would with a monarch having an ex wife alive and well.

Would Camilla as Queen consort risk being overshadowed by her DH's ex wife?

Also, if Diana remarried what effect would that have on her royal status, would she move out of where she was living at Kensington Palace do you think?

When I think of Diana being alive now I think of her being all over Twitter and Instagram and TikTok! I think she would've married three or four times and would probably be living abroad now.

Princessglittery · 13/09/2022 22:45

In practical terms Diana, would have no role as an ex wife. However, when Charles dies she would be the King’s mother. If you are old enough to recall Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother you can see there could be an issue with titles for Camilla as the Dowager Queen Consort and Diana as the King’s Mother.

I think there would be a real possibility that Diana would overshadow Camilla. The question would be what would the media’s role be in creating a faux rivalry a la Kate & Meghan, and Diana’s role - she knew how to work the press. An additional factor is how her looks faded as she aged, I think she would have aged well but there is no guarantee.

I would expect the divorce settlement to include her right to live in KP, and what would happen if she remarried.

If she remarried then yes she would have been expected to move out of KP. She would also cease the be the Princess of Wales. Unmarried, she could have kept both for life

No idea what her profile would be by now had she lived. I think a lot would depend on whether she had remarried and to what sort of man (assuming she was totally heterosexual) or if she had continued to have a string of boyfriends, and how discreet they were (and whether any further ones were married, like Will Carling who now admits 'stupidly doing things you shouldn't do')

Why is that so hard for you to believe? Beyonce is on Tiktok. I can imagine Diana would make videos on there if she was alive.

OP, to answer your question (but I'm not an expert) I don't think it would make any difference as they divorced? So she would be a divorced wife married to a prince, who is now a king, and their first child will become king still someday. That's literally it (IMOIMBW).

CPL593H · 13/09/2022 22:52

As someone of Diana's age who remembers it all very well, I hope she would have gone on to live a productive life with her causes and remarry. It perhaps unfairly might have been difficult for Charles and Camilla to if she were still alive.

I think she would have rocked up in the Spencer tiara to William's coronation (invited) but otherwise would have been out of the official Royal picture.

BordoisAgain · 13/09/2022 22:54

Diane would never be known as "Kings mother" as its not a formal title- It was only ever used to differentiate between Queen Elizabeth, the wife of King George and Queen Elizabeth the Queen Regnant.

As Diana was a) not Queen and b) not the mother of a queen called Diana too then there would be no need for it.

CPL593H · 13/09/2022 22:57

Should add, I don't think there is any way in the world she would have married Dodi Al Fayed, a relationship that had "fling" written all over it. I hazard a guess that she was still in love with the infinitely more worthwhile Hasnat Khan, but he did not want the whole circus.

I think she would have eventually moved on from both of them, but to what or whom, who knows?

TrueNorthernBird · 13/09/2022 22:59

I think she would be living a low key life a la Jacqueline Onassis; married to a very very wealthy man and ensconced in a number of fuck off villas and apartments in the world's most beautiful spots. Med in the Summer, Mountains in the Winter, New York for shopping, London on very rare occasions (boys would fly to her).

She would have no impact on Camilla and Charles. She'd have given up making their lives misery I reckon.

User1563 · 13/09/2022 22:59

I have been watching The Crown and then some real life pictures and videos of Diana. She was so beautiful and confident. I haven’t seen anyone like her.

I think she would have totally overshadowed the royal family. She had so much charisma and really connected with everyone.

Keyansier · 13/09/2022 22:59

Btw was anybody else visibly shocked when seeing Harry's hair (more precisely, lack of) when with the crowd shaking hands the other day? I could hardly believe it. Did not look like that the last time I saw a picture or footage of him.

PolkaDotShoes · 13/09/2022 23:01

Supposedly she was set to marry Dodi Fayed and have a baby with him. I can't imagine his father being very discreet - it would have been like Thomas Markle before his time.

Keyansier · 13/09/2022 23:02

^^ I know it's not exactly unusual for men to be balding at his age, and William obviously is and has been for a while too, but Harry always looked to me like he had thick tufts of hair, when the camera showed his bald patch I gasped out loud. (I should also point out before anyone jumps on me I'm not saying it as a criticism, just a personal observation)

Reallybadidea · 13/09/2022 23:03

I really don't think that Charles would have been able to marry Camilla if Diana hadn't died.

TattiePants · 13/09/2022 23:04

So if Diana didn’t remarry, she would have retained her Princess of Wales title. What would Kate’s title be? Can there be two Princesses of Wales?

I don't think 'the crown' was a fair picture of how she seemed at the time. The footage of her meeting a man in hospital with AIDS is probably still on youtube. In 'the crown' she gives him a girlish hug, but in news footage you can see she had a respectful chat and took his hand in a very dignified way. There is also footage of her holding a child with leprosy, children who lost limbs from bombs, and walking through mine fields at the end of her life. She was truly extraordinary and I don't think 'the crown' did her justice.

Georgeskitchen · 13/09/2022 23:07

Diana never made any secret of wanting a third child and hopefully a little girl so I think she would have married again (not to Dodi) I think she may have lived abroad, possibly the US, and lived a low profile life. I think if she was still alive she would have been a good confidante for Meghan, and she and Harry may not have bowed out of the RF

This is the Dodi Al Fayed who was being coerced by his father regarding his relationship with her and apparently had his real girlfriend on another yacht at where ever he and Diana were last. I don't think she would have gone down that road. I remember reading many accounts that Dodi took her to the Villa Windsor (Wallis and Edward's house in Paris) on the last day of her life as Mohammed AF was thinking of buying it for them and she couldn't wait to scarper.

She wasn't the naive 19 year old who got engaged to Charles by then.

Not sure she would have kept the title as its for the wife of the Prince of Wales. When Charles gave the title to William the title transferred from Camilla to Kate - same would have happened if Diana was still around - title goes to Kate as wife if William.

Hibernationsetting · 13/09/2022 23:10

I agree with @Reallybadidea

i doubt he would have been allowed to remarry if his first wife had been still living. He was heir apparent by then of course.

GhostFromTheOtherSide · 13/09/2022 23:11

Oh I absolutely think that Diana would have been all over tiktok. She was the ultimate attention seeker and as much as she complained about the press she craved their attention and essentially threw herself into the limelight at every opportunity.

I don’t think though that it would have made any difference to Charles and Camilla if Diana had been alive. The press were pretty much turning against her at the time of her death, she had been sleeping with all and sundry including married men and that didn’t endear her to the press.

The only reason why she has essentially been sainted is because she is dead.

As for Dodi al-Fayed, I have no idea why anyone thinks they were going to be married and have babies. They had been together for a matter of weeks, incidentally he was with someone else when he started seeing her, and there is absolutely no evidence that she was pregnant other than speculation.

As for Camilla, Diana was no less an OW than she was. She just wasn’t OW in Charles’s marriage, plenty of others though.

User1563 · 13/09/2022 23:11

@gnilliwdog Yes the actress although very pretty just couldn’t compare to the charisma or beauty of Diana. I gave up on crown in series 3 but started watching again after the Queen’s death. Have been binging last few days.

I dont think the monarchy would have been so popular had Diana lived. She would have taken all the media oxygen from them. She came to our school to help fund raise for a cancer hospital and everyone was awestruck.

DieDeutschLehrerin · 13/09/2022 23:12

Margaret Beaufort, Henry VII's mother, was known as, "My Lady, the King's Mother" so I guess that could have been a possibility.

I wonder if the difference between Diana and Catherine would have been that Diana became a Princess of Wales, as Charlotte is now, I guess, and Catherine would be the Princess of Wales. That could well be wrong though.

gnilliwdog · 13/09/2022 23:15

@User1563 Aww. I do feel the world was a better place with her in it. It's amazing you met her! I feel like the old guard now, who remembers how special she was. I expect to see her progressively rewritten, since her popularity is not convenient, but at least some of us remember her as she was.
