I plan to go next week from the midlands, to oh my respects. How many of us are planning the journey? I’m considering going late in the evening as it should be open 23 hours a day according to the news.

No

Jeremy Hint and Andrea Leadsom Tory MPs had pictures taken outside BP and Hunt pictured himself laying flowers!

I just don’t like it. She’s passed away. Sadly, it seems possible some of the family didn’t get there in time to be with her. And then we have people using her death as a photo opportunity. If they truly want to pay their respects, then do it. I think taking a photo, some smiling and checking how they looked before retaking as obviously they didn’t look as good as they wanted, 🙄shows a total lack of respect.

FrecklesMalone · 08/09/2022 22:11

Absolutely not. Both sycophantic and all about the person going. Bleugh

steppon · 08/09/2022 22:18

@ThickCutSteakChips yep my granny was in her room where people came to pay respects, as you say very normal in other countries. I didn't realise it was considered weird but it's weird that it's a tradition.

steppon · 08/09/2022 22:20

@MrsPelligrinoPetrichor that was a question to another poster 🙄

Leadsom deleted hers but there are screenshots.

@OnceAgainWithFeeling can I ask, as part of Operation London Bridge, how long have you been aware that this was coming? Are the rumours true that the Palace has known for a while that she didn't have long?

Plans have been in place for years. They were reviewed and tweaked in March this year when she was known to be unwell. And then again 3 months later. We all hoped we had months/years before needing to implement them.

I’m on OLB. OU isn’t part of my remit. Sorry.

There is obviously crossover in terms of getting the Queen back to London.

I am a pensioner living in the North East and cannot afford the money on an expensive train journey there and back, accompanied by an inflated price one night hotel stay.
I was seven years old when her father, King George VI , died.I can remember the photos in the papers of the crowds filing past his cofffin as he lay in state. That was the time I discovered that we die one one day.So definitely not be going.

Always4Brenner · 08/09/2022 23:19

No I can’t stand for hours will watch the funeral though.

cestlavielife · 08/09/2022 23:24

200000 went to see queen mother.cofgin it is a thing
Lying-in-state
Lying-in-state describes the formal occasion in which a coffin is placed on view to allow the public to pay their respects to the deceased before the funeral ceremony.

Lying-in-state in the UK is given to the Sovereign, as Head of State, the current or past Queen Consort and sometimes former Prime Ministers.

Many notable occasions of lying-in-state have taken place in Westminster Hall at the Houses of Parliament, a few days before the funeral ceremony, including:

1898 - William Ewart Gladstone

1910 - King Edward VII

1936 - King George V

1952 - King George VI

1953 - Queen Mary

1965 - Sir Winston Churchill

2002 - Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother.

The ceremony
During the lying-in-state period, the coffin rests on a raised platform in the middle of Westminster Hall. Each corner of the platform is guarded around the clock by units from the Sovereign's Bodyguard, Foot Guards or the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment.

Members of the public are free to file past the platform and pay their respects.

Queen Mother
Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, died on 30 March 2002. She lay in state for three days in Westminster Hall where people could visit before her funeral in Westminster Abbey on 9 April 2002.

An estimated 200,000 people paid their respects to the Queen Mother.

In other countries yes you file past open coffin

Nanalisa60 · 08/09/2022 23:29

In the north east of Scotland, if the Funeral car is going from Balmoral to Edinburgh I’m sure people will line the streets to pay there respect, I will be paying mine.

Nat6999 · 08/09/2022 23:32

Flockbee her coffin will be covered in the Royal Standard. The coffin will be a lead lined one like all the Royal coffins are, that is why it takes 8 bearers to carry it.

CPL593H · 08/09/2022 23:36

In case anyone thinks the coffin will be open; it won't. It will be on a catafalque (raised platform) covered by a royal standard, with some of the Crown jewels on top (I'm not sure what, but it will involve a crown) There will be a uniformed guard on each corner and at some point that will be a member of the family, usually male but I can see Anne doing it.

The queues for the Queen Mother were very long and I imagine these will be much more so.

This was the plan as of 5 years ago. it's always referred to and I think pretty accurate (as of then)

Anothernamechangeplease · 08/09/2022 23:46

No.

I'm genuinely sad that she has passed away. I respect the way she fulfilled her role and her sense of duty. It's weird to think that she is no longer around... she has been an amazingly consistent presence in an ever changing world.

However, it simply isn't important enough to me personally for me to even consider going to see her lying in state. I didn't know her, and it isn't a personal loss for me. I get that others clearly feel differently.

mondaytosunday · 08/09/2022 23:47

No. I will watch the funeral and mourn in private.

PermanentTemporary · 08/09/2022 23:48

No. I can see it's part of a long tradition but one I'm happy to skip.

I quite like that as the Queen has died at Balmoral, there will be a train journey south. If it passes anywhere near me I might go and see it pass.

I'm guessing there will be a spike of babies called Elizabeth around now and that would be nice i think.

LivingOnAnIsland · 08/09/2022 23:48

Yes, definitely. I couldn't go when the Queen Mother died, and I think Prince Philip didn't want it, but am going to pay my respects to the Queen. It's not ghoulish at all - closed coffin - and is an acknowledgement of a lifetime of service. If you don't want to go, then don't, it's not compulsory, but there are some of us that do want to go and we will.
