I plan to go next week from the midlands, to oh my respects. How many of us are planning the journey? I’m considering going late in the evening as it should be open 23 hours a day according to the news.

Camping out for a week in a 7 mile queue to walk past a coffin !

It seems so weird.

JohnsShirt · 08/09/2022 21:54

I didn't even know that was a thing, but no!
That's weird.

No.

Leave the woman alone. She was working under public scrutiny pretty much until her dying day. Give her some peace in death.

It would be exactly what she wanted otherwise it wouldn't happen. If it's not your thing then fine but plenty of people will want to .

Port1aCastis · 08/09/2022 21:55

No I don't want to see a corpse unless I have to. Seeing my Father was bad enough and anyway I'd need to get the train up to London which is a very long trip

YourLipsMyLipsApocalypse · 08/09/2022 21:56

Travel miles to walk past a box behind ropes? Nah.

steppon · 08/09/2022 21:56

Why would you see a corpse?

ThickCutSteakChips · 08/09/2022 21:56

BeetrootBeetrootGhali · 08/09/2022 21:18

She is someone's Mother, Grandma and Great Grandma

Wow, I hadn’t realized the inbreeding was that bad.

😂

nokitchen · 08/09/2022 21:57

No. Also can't bear the idea of all those thousands of bouquets of flowers wrapped in cellophane. By all means lay flowers but not with cellophane.

DillDanding · 08/09/2022 21:58

I think that would be beyond weird. I don’t know a single person who would do this.

You won't see a corpse 🙄

Trinity65 · 08/09/2022 22:00

No
I could go as I live not far from there (via trains), but I do not do queues very well and would hate the queueing.

Eh? Why would you see a corpse? You see a flag-draped coffin.

therealgeek · 08/09/2022 22:00

@OnceAgainWithFeeling can I ask, as part of Operation London Bridge, how long have you been aware that this was coming? Are the rumours true that the Palace has known for a while that she didn't have long?

generalh · 08/09/2022 22:01

MissingNashville · 08/09/2022 21:43

No, I find the idea of it wrong. I really don’t understand why people do it and the reasons they give make no sense to me.

Watching BBC footage earlier seeing people lay flowers, fair enough, but then they were turning around whilst someone took a photo of them. Maybe one for Facebook later?

Every time something like this happens, I dislike people more and just feel a million miles away from what society has become.

Jeremy Hint and Andrea Leadsom Tory MPs had pictures taken outside BP and Hunt pictured himself laying flowers!

Wafflesnsniffles · 08/09/2022 22:01

What is ghoulish about it? - obviously the coffin will be closed, nowt ghoulish about that. Its just a mark of respect. A moment in history.

But no I wont be going. Queuing, crowds, waiting - not something Im good at.

Snowiscold · 08/09/2022 22:01

I wouldn’t do it, but I don’t think it’s weird. It’s a traditional way of showing respect.

AuntieMarys · 08/09/2022 22:02

We are actually in London next week. Not a monarchist at all but she did a good job. Not sure if I want to go and see the lying in state...queues will be horrible

She was 96, I'm pretty sure everyone knew she didn't have long.

Ha! Grin

SquirmOfEels · 08/09/2022 22:05

i might.

It depends on how long the queues are -I'm in London so could go in the small hours. I went for HMQM - because I happened to catch a news broadcast saying that it would not after all close overnight, so I hopped down at about 10pm and queued only for a couple of hours

70billionthnamechange · 08/09/2022 22:05

ew

ThickCutSteakChips · 08/09/2022 22:05

Us Brits are so weird about death - in other countries, seeing dead bodies isn't an issue at all and going to visit someone lying in state, particularly in a closed coffin, would be totally normal.

In Ireland you often have the dead person in the living room while all the family are there in the lead up to the funeral!

Wafflesnsniffles · 08/09/2022 22:07

People leaving stuff when someone dies - flowers, teddies............all of it wrapped in cellophane. Such a pointless waste.

Day20 · 08/09/2022 22:07

Mabelstearooms · 08/09/2022 21:08

No, I live 150 miles away from London & I also have to go to work. Life still goes on.

It's very sad the queen has died. But this is just a weird tradition that needs to be given up now. Let the poor love rest!

This and I had no idea this was a thing!
