I plan to go next week from the midlands, to oh my respects. How many of us are planning the journey? I’m considering going late in the evening as it should be open 23 hours a day according to the news.

Really pleased for those who have managed to see her in wait- what an experience and thank you for sharing.

upinaballoon · 13/09/2022 08:07

I'm too far away to go but if Sains has still got a big picture of her at the entrance to the shop I shall make a mark of respect. I might touch the picture of her foot. In Rome people touch the foot of the statue of St. Peter, so why not?
Weird? (a favourite MN put down) Weird not to want to.

TrashyPanda · 13/09/2022 08:09

I’m so glad we were able to go.
there were people of all ages in the queue.
everyone was very respectful
a huge outpouring of love and respect

Pugdogmom · 13/09/2022 09:05

I wouldn't personally. I am near enough to have gone to Edinburgh, but didn't fancy queuing for hours for a few minute walk past of the coffin where you have to get past as quickly as possible for the thousands of others that are behind you.
Respect to anyone that did, but I didn't see the point, when I could see on TV.
I think London would be even more of a nightmare.

Iusedtobecarmen · 13/09/2022 12:37

Thanks for the update re:Edinburgh
I'm going thurs. Its a long way by train for me, but I'm happy and expecting to queue for several hours. Encouraged by the times stated so far. I know London will be worse. But I can cope with 7 or 8 hours say. But surely for most 12 hrs plus impossible for most people.

@OnceAgainWithFeeling I'd like to know if it will be a glass see-through casket, or a closed wooden coffin. If it's a closed coffin and you can't see anything, it could be empty, then I don't see what the point would be of going. I pictured it like other leaders around the world who lie in state in a glass enclosure. Easily viewable. My next question is would she be embalmed if it's glass enclosure/casket because the body starts to bloat and decompose only 2 days after death so if it's glass viewing she'd need to be embalmed.

Here is a photo taken yesterday at St Giles, I am the rabbit on the left.

@Iusedtobecarmen wear your most comfortable footwear and take appropriate clothes.

Even if the temps in London are high it can be cold just standing in the shade for hours. Similarly if the sun is going to be out take a hat.

i wish I had taken a book/kindle as the queue was static for longish periods. London might be different though. Also consider a spare battery for your phone.

TrashyPanda · 13/09/2022 13:30

if you are going to be queuing overnight, take a pair of gloves - my hands were freezing!

you have to dispose of all cups, bottles etc before you go in, so don’t take travel cups etc as you have to toss them

if you need specs to read your phone, remember to take them with you. Guess who didn’t…

medianewbie · 13/09/2022 15:17

The Edinburgh queue is now closed.
I went yesterday. Calm, good natured, surprisingly moving. (also cold, hungry after as all biscuits/water etc had to be dumped).

Zosime · 13/09/2022 15:22

The published route for London is all along the south bank, so there may well be a bit of a breeze off the river. There are a lot of interesting landmarks on both sides of the river - do look up the route before you go, so you know what to look out for and can make the most of it.

maranella · 13/09/2022 15:23

Definitely not! I live near London and could get in easily enough, but the thought of standing in a 5-mile queue among thousands of others for up to 12 hours is my idea of hell. I've even cancelled meeting a friend in London tomorrow, because I don't want to be crammed onto a train with a million other people.

OnceAgainWithFeeling

sorry if this is a silly question

was it always part of the plan to have the Queen taken to St Giles in Edinburgh?

It’s been the plan widely circulating within the Operation since Thursday - it was always in the plan but obviously has been tweaked as she was originally supposed to be going via train to London.
I volunteered yesterday and today with crowd control and directions in Edinburgh, some times the queues were many hours long but this morning early on it was very quiet apparently.

TrashyPanda · 13/09/2022 16:58

@PeachMelba78 - you all did a great job. Thank you.

PeachMelba78 · 13/09/2022 17:18

@TrashyPanda thanks - it was a long way for me to travel in (as it was for many people) but I felt it was important to help people.

Thanks I'm.planning layers with a waterproof. Might take a book! Good tip 👌 and gloves
2 Dc are coming too but they know the score and are old enough technically

Iusedtobecarmen · 13/09/2022 17:51

Can someone give me tips on the route from Euston. I was planning on heading straight to westminster but obvs the queue will be miles back.
I've never been to this part of London. I'm.pretty smart getting about though.😀

I'm not sure where one will realistically join the queue.

I suggest getting the tube to Vauxhall (Victoria line) because that will probably put you in the right general area, because I think they said that it will be routed along the south bank, so you can probably walk along it to the back. BUT if it's 5-7 miles, as some estimates suggest, then the back will be well to the east of there.

Might be worth asking again tomorrow to see if there's more info on best place to head to

SupposeItDoesnt · 13/09/2022 18:40

I’ll be going Thursday night. Sadly it looks like ill be going alone, so feeling a bit nervous about getting lost as I’m not familiar with London. If anyone is planning on Thursday night and queuing through the night then do PM me if you fancy a buddy!

Thank you I was planning to walk (half an hour ?) October straight to Westminster. Maybe not then

You won't get lost. I'm not massively familiar with London but the tubes are very easy and clear. There will be loads of tourists
I was initially planning to go alone too.

HairyToity · 13/09/2022 18:47

No chance. I'm a republican. She wasn't my nan. Ridiculous.

SquirmOfEels · 13/09/2022 19:05

When they did this for HMQM, you went in to the Palace of Westminster via Victoria Tower (southernmost end), having queued in a snake all through Victoria Park - where there were also security checks and books of condolence. Before getting in to Victoria Gardens, it went over Lambeth Bridge, then back up the south bank.

It will probably go along the Thames Path rather than the road, so there is no need to cross over, and it's uninterrupted at least as far as Tower Bridge

SquirmOfEels · 13/09/2022 22:16

I've just seen a map of expected queue on the news.

The route is as described, and will go all the way along the southern bank of the Thames.

The maximum permitted length of the queue is eyewatering - Southwark Park!

SquirmOfEels · 13/09/2022 22:25

So, @Iusedtobecarmen from Euston, I think it might be more realistic to get the Northern Line (Bank branch) to London Bridge, take the exits to the north (Tooley Street) cross over and go to the path along the south of The Thames.

If no sign of a queue, turn left and go west until you find it. If there is, turn right and go east until you get to the end

I’ve been saying since last Thursday it would be 7 miles. ;)
