I plan to go next week from the midlands, to oh my respects. How many of us are planning the journey? I’m considering going late in the evening as it should be open 23 hours a day according to the news.

Apparently you will be able to file past 23 hours a day so we may go in the middle of the night

Pythonesque · 08/09/2022 23:53

I was pregnant with DD when the Queen Mother died; I did go to pay my respects. It helped that I was working in London though. I would like to go, and DD with me. My mother is probably too frail for the queues but I'm going to see what she thinks.

RJnomore1 · 08/09/2022 23:53

I might try to get to edinburgh. This feels momentous. I don’t know if I’m just maudlin but it feels like the complete end of an era to me, I am no royalist but we won’t see her like again.

No, I am going to lay flowers at some point.

MayISuggestSomeThickCutSteakChipsToGoWithThat · 09/09/2022 00:14

Erm... No

AuroraCake · 09/09/2022 00:16

No. Where would I even get the time to queue for that long.

Swimmingpoolsally · 09/09/2022 00:20

No, I don’t like the idea of it. It feels mawkish to me. Going to gawp at her coffin and likely one of her children mourning over it. It feels wrong to me.

No, I live 150 miles away from London & I also have to go to work. Life still goes on.

It's very sad the queen has died. But this is just a weird tradition that needs to be given up now. Let the poor love rest!

How does it prevent her resting?

I don’t think the children will be there. They did the vigil of the princes with the QM grandsons when she lay in state a call back to when the sons of George V did it. And I think some other royals stunk in the back to watch. They were only their a very short time. Royals used to go to the line to talk to people though. That queue was really long.

I wouldn’t be able to cue that long on what is likely to be a work day.

I'm planning to travel from Northern Ireland to either London or Edinburgh. It's something I always intended to do and it's an important moment in history.

AuntTwacky · 09/09/2022 00:38

No way

I went to see the Queen Mother. I travelled into London about 10pm and got home about 7 AM. I joined queue at Westminster Bridge on the County Hall river bank and we walked down the river path, over Lambeth Bridge and then back up Millbank to Westminster Hall.

ChaToilLeam · 09/09/2022 00:41

No, I can’t fathom why anyone would want to.

Katypyee · 09/09/2022 00:57

Nope

JacquelineCarlyle · 09/09/2022 00:59

I want to go (also in the Midlands if you fancy a random meet up Op!)

EmmaH2022 · 09/09/2022 01:08

Side note - just asking here as the thread is still active

Did Charles and Anne get to Balmoral this morning? I hope they were able to say goodbye.

HaveringWavering · 09/09/2022 01:14

Judging by a lot of the responses on here, I wonder if there will be a significant proportion of people who turn up expecting an open coffin and get seriously pissed off when they get to the front of the queue and find it's closed!

AngelDelightUK · 09/09/2022 06:02

I would like to. I sort of regret not going to London when Diana died to sign books of condolences etc. in reality I don’t know if I will manage it, the queues do sound horrendous

HappyPeach · 09/09/2022 06:20

I wanted to for sure, but a 7 mile queue is something else. I shall wait & see.

BarrelOfOtters · 09/09/2022 06:40

I don’t think its mawkish or weird. If I lived in London I might, late at night. She was the head of state. But I won’t as it’s a long journey.

KatherineJaneway · 09/09/2022 06:44

The queues will be miles and miles long.

Isthisreasonable · 09/09/2022 07:13

It's not mawkish or weird, it's paying your respects for her service. I went to the Queen Mother's lying in state with my mother. We joined the queue at 8am which started at Tower Bridge and went all along the South Bank to Lambeth Bridge before crossing the Thames and up to the Houses of Parliament. People were sharing memories of the Queen mum. We were speculating then what the queues would be like when QEII passed away.

ithoughtisawapuddycat · 09/09/2022 07:24

I always said I would but I've recently been very ill and cannot make the 4 hr journey each way. I wanted to pay my respects in-person.

OnceAgainWithFeeling · 09/09/2022 07:34

If you do go, please go equipped with warm clothing, waterproofs, water and food, any medication that you need. We anticipate miles of queues and people camping on pavements.

CurrentHun · 09/09/2022 07:46

Lying in state and paying respects is completely traditional and normal and there is absolutely no need for people on the thread to be so wierd about it. It’s not going to be an open casket FGS.
To everyone who can’t make it to do that but would like to do something- local councils are opening their books of condolences for anyone to sign.
