Meghan challenged racism, sexism, anti transgender jokes

The Sunday Times is reporting that when Meghan first met Harry's friends, she challenged every single one of their sexist, racist and anti-transgender jokes.

"Soon after Harry and Meghan’s relationship was revealed, Harry invited Meghan to join his weekend shoot at Sandringham. With the Queen’s permission he had invited 16 friends to arrive for dinner on Friday night, shoot on Saturday and leave after lunch on Sunday. Most of the guests were old friends from Eton with their wives or girlfriends. All of them were employed by international banks and auction houses or were estate owners and racehorse trainers. All were bonded by common assumptions, principles and loyalties.

Like other shooting weekends, Harry was looking forward to endless banter, jokes — and a lot of drinking. He had not anticipated Meghan’s reaction. Their jokes involving sexism, feminism and transgender people ricocheted around the living-rooms and dining-rooms. Without hesitation, Meghan challenged every guest whose conversation contravened her values. According to some of Harry’s friends, again and again she reprimanded them about the slightest inappropriate nuance. Nobody was exempt. Harry’s world would not be her world.

Beyond Harry’s hearing, some friends questioned Meghan’s “wokery”. Meghan was a dampener on the party, they concluded. She lacked any sense of humour. Driving home after Sunday lunch, the texts pinged between the cars: “OMG what about HER?” said one; “Harry must be f*ing nuts.”"

@HermioneWeasley the article was written to attack Meghan. I thought it was very interesting that this was seen as a negative about Meghan.

Well, no-one is all good or all bad, are they… I am entirely capable of mostly disliking her and thinking she has an economic relationship with the truth when it suits her whilst also entirely being able to imagine (and approving of) her doing this.

This good or evil mentality is so counter productive and just forces people into intransigence.

Pyewhacket · 22/07/2022 14:37

And I wonder who fed that to the Sunday Times, none of which can be proved. It just feeds a stereotype and gives them more profile.

garlicandsapphires · 22/07/2022 14:44

Wow. I wasn’t at all sure about her but I am now!!

Why are posters adding racism into the mix?

It doesn’t mention racism in the article.

You really think a group of all-white elitist British aristocrats with a fondness for telling bigoted jokes would have the consideration, care and intelligence to not tell jokes about one single minority, while happily telling jokes about other minorities?

I've spent time around the English aristo set. They tell racist jokes all the time without even blinking, it's normal to them. I don't believe for a second they were telling sexist and transphobic jokes but no racist ones.

The real question is which of Harry's friends is such a snake as to sell private stories about Harry to some nasty little tell-all book peddler, and who decided how the story was told?

If you were going to tell a reporter that someone had a go at you for telling bigoted jokes, would you really say "yah we were telling racist jokes"? Either the leaker didn't include that, or the writer redacted it. The intention was to smear Meghan so of course the wording is going to be chosen to be most flattering to the others and negative towards Meghan.

Evidently the writer believes the Sunday Times audience is fine with sexist jokes but not racist jokes. What a shameful state of affairs.

rainrelief · 22/07/2022 15:13

That made me like her!

clpsmum · 22/07/2022 15:18

DeepSeededUrbanDecay · 20/07/2022 17:44

I like her even more for hearing that.

Same!!

Would it surprise you that an old white man that aligns themselves with The Times would be upset that racists, sexist behaviour was being called out? Harry certainly punched way above his weight with Meghan but away from the wiles of the Eton types the scales may be falling off his eyes

The Times actually has excellent reporting on feminist issues. They broke the story of the Rotherham scandal, for example. Do you actually read the Times? Or have you just put a label on them and believe your own prejudice?

have seriously doubted that he was someone I'd want to keep seeing.

Are we supposed to wonder what could possibly have been the attraction ?

I'm imagining Mrs Merton, "what first attracted you to the millionaire Paul Daniels?"

DaniRabbity · 22/07/2022 15:24

All these posters claiming Meghan only married Harry for his money, yet she's simultaneously blamed for making him walk away from his family, status and wealth, and into a life where they both had to work and hustle for jobs to support themselves.

If she was trying to be a gold digger then she's not very good at it, is she?

MrsTerryPratchett · 22/07/2022 15:27

I like MM. I think she loves Harry. I also think his station, fame, money and connections are attractive. Otherwise he's just a semi-employed, passably attractive bloke.

Anon778833 · 22/07/2022 15:27

The truth is coming out now. This seems a highly probable scenario for me that Meghan callee these things out and became ‘duchess difficult’ because of it.

One reason the RF need to go is precisely this ingrained racism and bigotry that seems hard to get away from.

LiesDoNotBecomeUs · 22/07/2022 15:51

My (deeply Christian and wholeheartedly socialist) Dad has always said that there is good in everyone... but sometimes you have to really look to see it.

There he is - right again.

Megan seemed so wrong in all reports and yet here The Times have show that she showed courage and determination - stood-up to 'important' people on their own ground.

I'd never expected to see my Dad and The Times on the same page :)

RiverSkater · 23/07/2022 10:19

She challenged them - good on her.

What we don't know is Harry's reaction.

And I'm guessing being a Duchess trumped everything. No better or worse than Catherine , both out to bag a Prince.

Neither of these women are different to so many other men or women who do what they need to get what they want.

3amAndImStillAwake · 23/07/2022 10:45

And I'm guessing being a Duchess trumped everything. No better or worse than Catherine , both out to bag a Prince.

🙄 You have no idea if either were out to "bag a Prince". And if Meghan was, criticising all of Harry's friends would have been an odd way to go about it.

Novella4 · 23/07/2022 22:03

I haven't read the times article but all I can say is well done Megan if it's true she challenged those attitudes and well done Harry for marrying up .

Usernamesarboring · 08/12/2022 14:10

@antelopevalley @stuntbubbles lets get her Noble peace prize becuase what she did is no other woman has ever done, questioning rude, toxic jokes of in laws, friends. She is even greater than all those women fighting for freedom in Iran or likes of Málala. Likes of you never created threads in support of Nazhrin Zagharri when she spent 5 years in Erin prison in Iran, she suffered so much more but all the mumsnet attention on poor Meghan is sickening.
You are very selective in your support of women and fight against patriarchy.

whoamI00 · 08/12/2022 14:18

lol just lol

Cheekymaw · 08/12/2022 14:26

Good for her! They sound like horrible people but what can you expect at a "shoot". Killing poor wee beasties! Good for Meghan!

booboo82 · 08/12/2022 14:33

How any of you can think any of this shite is true is beyond me ! She is soooo so fake its unreal ! How can you not see it !

blisstwins · 08/12/2022 16:31

Good for meghan

bakalava · 08/12/2022 16:58

Her friends probably leaked the story. It does make you question :
She already knew he was the racist-in-chief in the friendship group
She already knew his friends were all racist
She already thought his family was racist
She was already feeling this was a racist country
So why did she marry him if it was not for the money?

My nightmare is.being trapped in a roon with.one of the woke spouting their beliefs and criticising your failures to see things their way. God, she must have killed that party stone dead..
If it'true. I don't believe it. Nobody pulls people up on every flagship fashionable issue, one after the other. Especially not to Eton/Oxford types. They are corruscatingly witty and would have destroyed her verbally.

wightwine · 08/12/2022 22:49

Are you sure they would have 'destroyed' her? Sunak, Kwarteng, Cameron, Johnson, Rees Mogg all went to Winchester and Eton and then Oxbridge. Is there any proof that they are corruscatingly witty? They are probably used to people, like you, fawning all over them rather than being the wits of the century.

Bestcatmum · 08/12/2022 22:56

Upper class people are morons, I grew up with them and think nothing of being rascist, sexist etc and "banter" just means I'll say disgusting things and because it's banter anyone who doesn't laugh have no sense of humour.
I won't have anything to do with people like that any more including my own parents because they are vile.
I can imagine she went down like a lead balloon with Harry's crowd though. It must have been some feat to get him away from them. He must have really been crazy about her.
I'm not particularly woke but that set are horrible and think nothing of groping women and generally behaving like total bores.
